I’ve had my fair share on the dating app scene. I’ve tried almost every single one of them: Tinder, Bumble, OKCupid, etc. However, Hinge is one that likes to distinguish itself as a relationship app or, an “app made to be deleted”. Or so I thought.

I first tried Hinge in London (2018) and came across some really weird guys on there. But what bothered me was that most of them weren’t actually looking for relationships. They were looking to connect with women and “see where things go”, meaning they were all just looking for some pussy. I did ended up dating one guy who went from HVM to LVM within the span of a month. I immediately broke that off and deleted the app because I figured maybe this wasn’t the place for me to be trying it out and because the guys I was matching with were all using me as a fetish (as a black woman, it’s more typical in Europe than it is anywhere else. That’s just my experience 🤷🏿‍♀️)

I came back to the US (end of 2019) and moved from NY to MD, and figured I should try it out again. I’m in a new city, so why not put myself out there and try to find someone. I downloaded, matched with people and starting having conversations. Again, I was seeing this pattern of many men being on the app that weren’t looking for serious relationship. Some hid it better than others, but still it really bothered me. Some would blatantly ask you if they wanted to fuck, all on an app that was “made to be deleted”.

Why are you on an app that is specifically made for those who want to find something serious? Take your ass to Tinder if you’re looking for a fuck, bro. And then it occurred to me that these apps, no matter how hard they try to cater it towards one thing, will be contaminated by people who wanna do whatever they wanna do. The dating pool on Hinge is tainted with LVM who just want “vibe” and “chill” and fuck around.

Hinge apparently is one of the “better” apps that people can use to find something serious. In my personal experience, it’s a load of bullshit. This is one of the main reasons why I’ve decided to quit the apps. I’m sure there are ladies out there that have experienced what I have experienced, and there are ladies that have been able to create meaningful relationships from the app. If you happen to also be experiencing what I’ve experienced, it may be time to take a step back from the apps and put that time and energy somewhere else. If you’ve made it work (like many people I know have), that’s awesome for you. Honestly. But anyways, I’ve decided to go back to the organic way of dating: meeting people in person!!! And I don’t plan on ever downloading a dating app again.
