So today I was thinking of just how many women I know who are saddled with the caregiving of older incapacitated parents.

I work along mainly older women and I can think of at least 5 or so I’ve known personally who were always leading a hobbly parent around, always talking about doctors about and physical therapy and nurse aides bailing, injuries, and bad hips etc etc.

Ok. So parents get older and need help. That happens, right? But why is it always women saddled with this burden. Every single one of them has at least one brother. And of the 5 all but one have 3+ siblings. One came from a huge family of 9 children.

Why randomly the women always saddled with this.

If was talking to one coworker today who was going on about how she can’t take vacation. Til finally I was like why? What’s blocking you? Covid? Lack of PTO days. Turns out her mother is completely incapacitated and bed ridden and needs to be changed and she doesn’t trust her elderly also limited father to do it so, she has to wait for her brother and his wife to fly in from another state to relieve her but they only get 2 weeks of leave a year and don’t really want to spend it that way. She was telling me quite angrily that she found a nurse through the church to watch the mother who pretended to be interested but “lied to her. Fact of the matter is people just don’t want to do it!“

One of the first question she asked when we met is do i live with my parents like her??? And are they older??? Do I have to take care of them???

The lady next to me also cares for an elderly woman and before I had this job I was working on another sitting next to yet another woman who cares for an elderly 90 year old mother.

It’s unfortunate and I do feel for them but at the same time all kinda of gave off desperate vibes of needing someone to vent heavy too and 1-2 have been pushy about forging a friendship kind of to relieve themselves emotionally of that burden, even trying to go about it in ways that were a bit boundary crossing

I hope I never need to do this. You can see all of them are at like ropes end emotionally in ways that manifest as like a kind of outward neediness that’s a bit of a turn off or as I said involved crossing boundaries to get what they feel they so desperately need in the way of comfort and emotional relief

Amazing how this shit always falls to the woman though. Isn’t it enough that we do almost all the damn childcare already?? We have to add elder toy parents on too of it even when there are other male family members who could do it or at least pitch in

It’s a form of cultural misogyny that only daughters get saddled with this bs
