Egalitarianism is definitely the way to go, insofar as we're talking about legal rights, civil rights, economics, etc. As far as cultural attitudes towards genders go, it's a pipe dream at best.
Guys who take offense to this pragmatic rationale, typically lead lives where they don't find themselves doing anything more than the women around them. It's not hard for instance, to imagine a young, naive, out of shape guy that works as a clerk at a retail store, finding it hard to rationalize how he is in any position of authority over women. A woman could do his job, and in fact, many women do just that. Such is an inadvertent consequence of our modern lives, in that it's far easier for a man who toils in blood, sweat and tears, to bear witness to and acknowledge his natural affinity to lead. Men run shit. It's merely our jobs to be benevolent, fair and righteous.

Feminism is about equality, and egalitarianism is too, just in different ways.
Feminists believe that women are oppressed by the patriarchy, and the way to achieve gender equality is to advocate women's rights, until women are on the same level as men.
Egalitarians believe that men are disadvantaged in some situations, and women in others. The idea is to work on the issues of both genders individually until men and women are given the same advantage in all aspects of society.

There was also a time when men couldn't vote. In fact, propertied women could vote before propertied men in both the US and UK (propertied women could vote in New Jersey at the time of the Constitutional Convention). Over HALF of the men who died in WWI did not have the right to vote.
And besides, what's so great about voting? Especially if you have to die in a fucking trench? The smart women from the time period recognized that is was mostly an exercise in futility. In the UK, there was a period of 10 years between all men getting the vote and all women getting it. Those men got the vote for fighting in the first world war, the women got it because the men got it. Immediately before this wealthy feminists (who had a vote) would campaign against poorer people getting a vote. They also campaigned against black people voting in the US.
However, all this was almost a century ago, both women and men have had the right to vote many times longer than just men and women make up the majority of voters. But this is insignificant compared to the long stretch of human history where nobody of any gender voted on anything which is all of history before 1900.
So you want that 10 years out of all human history, paid for with millions of lives, to be called "oppression". I think that says a lot more about your reasoning than ours.

This image means that by choosing a word like "egalitarian" while actively rejecting a title like "feminist" suggests that you are NOT really interested in equality. If you're not trying to help women with their own gendered issues as well as anyone else who faces problems because of their gender identity, how can you even really be an egalitarian? Women and transgender people face some of the worst discrimination because of their gender identities (especially trans people, holy shit), everyone who is passionate about achieving the goal of gender equality needs to work for their causes too. Because "egalitarian" people who reject the title of feminist don't seem to want to help women with their gendered problems and I almost never see MRAs of any kind talk about the problems trans people have (unless they're trans men), it appears that they're only interested in supporting men's issues, which is why the other person would use the word "patriarchal". If a person is in favor of "equality" for men AND ONLY MEN but isn't interested in resolving problems for women or anyone else, they are not egalitarian, they are patriarchal because they only want to help men maintain their status quo of unequal social power.
If you are working to help men's issues but never women's, you are NOT for equality. If you want to call yourself an egalitarian, if you want to say you are for equality, you have to be open to helping other people with their issues too. And if you're one of those folks who actively hates people for trying to help achieve equality for women, then fuck you. How could actively fighting equality be "egalitarian"? Call yourself an egalitarian all you want though, I don't mind. Just actually support equality when you do so.
Alternatively, just be honest and don't call yourself "egalitarian" when you're really only interested in men's issues. I think you could call yourself a "men's rights activist" without anyone realizing that you're only using that terminology because "egalitarian" is completely wrong and you have no interest in achieving equality for all.

In my experience, anyone that rejects the title of "feminist" usually isn't actually in favor of equality, but feminists will generally agree about major men's issues like circumcision or gendered career expectations even if they don't fight hard for these causes. Meanwhile these folks who call themselves "egalitarian" who have no interest in helping women with their unique gendered issues and may even actively fight against feminism, use gendered slurs, and/or make sweeping generalizations about gender (e.g., "all women are X but men are Y"). That's the crap that I can't stand, if you're not really in favor of equality, don't try to claim that you are, because it's painfully obvious to most when a man claims to be in favor of equality but then appears to only be interested in subjugating women. If you ARE fighting for equality, I don't have a problem with the word. But a decent person should at least be RESPECTFUL of the gendered problems that others face even if they're not going to actively work to resolve them, but far too often I see MRAs claim to be for equality and then reject all the work feminists do to achieve that same equality. I literally saw someone yesterday posting a comment in this subreddit about how feminists were trying to work with NAMBLA to legalize child rape. That's completely insane! How can a person even say that with a straight face? And hey, if you think feminists are doing something wrong, the best way to fix that conflict is to join them. You're never really going to influence the feminist movement from the outside, but you definitely can from the inside, and as long as you speak a message of respect and equality, your message should be heard and equally respected.
