Imagine doing nothing wrong and yet getting jailed for not one or two, but seventeen precious years of his life. And look how blatantly it is

How was it appointed to be the court, when it doesn't even know that money can't bring back time?

As the cop said who did something similar to me (but on a much smaller scale; couple of weeks in jail, $15,000 in seized property and cash, lawyer's fees, etc, fired from my job and they dragged it out over a year so that a pending felony was on my background check making it impossible to get another job...):

"Well, I'm sure you're guilty of something, so take this as a warning."

So according to this article, if Andrew is awarded compensation, a clause kicks in where he is required to pay "room and board" back to the prison. This means that a lump sum of money will be deducted from whatever restitution he receives. Holy fucking shit in a bottle, talk about adding insult to injury. Or "compounding injury" is more apt, because this is way more than just an "insult". Trying to bill him for his own wrongful imprisonment is an extremely petty and vindictive action to take, and it speak volumes as to the corrupt state of the British justice system.

What truly shocks me though is that they are so open and brazen about this. To me, that signals the absolute nadir to which the corruption has taken hold.

Manchester Police withheld evidence from the defence and destroyed evidence in order to secure a conviction

The Police Officers who decided to do that (and cause a man to be wrongfully imprisoned) will face absolutely no criminal charges, internal disciplinary procedures, or even be named.

I really ought to be more shocked that something like that happened, shouldn't I?

The background to this is hideous, but it's worth being clear: anyone who's been in prison and is then cleared might end up paying for the accommodation. That part of it is not specifically a gender issue (clearly it's bollocks, and there are all sorts of stats about women and prison to throw around, but that is not a gendered rule.)

Obviously the wider issue is a cautionary tale to us all: he mainly ended up in prison because he agreed voluntarily to take part in an identity parade. Presumably he didn't have a lawyer at that point, or if he did said lawyer had some very specific reasons for recommending that, but it's worth reiterating. If you're ever in that position, shut your mouth and get a lawyer, and even then be cautious as hell.

I’d like to see an interview with the jurors who believed the cops & the prosecutors and put an innocent man in prison for 17 years. I’m sure their faith in the system is shaken.

Ah yes.. nothing says "We're sorry for the gross miscarriage of justice" than by awarding a pitiful amount of compensation and then saying "By the way, because you were innocent all along.. we're going to be charging you for the privilege of staying at the 5 star prison we put you up in"

Fucking hell, the man was INNOCENT and they think that they can get away with charging him money for his stay in prison?

If anything that should just be part of the costs the crown / government / courts have to shoulder for their massive fuck up!

The same thing happened to me. On a lesser charge. Ex wife accused me of hitting her. I didn't. No one cared. I had to get a lawyer. Go, no contact. All while she lived in the house, I was paying all bills for and mortgage on.

There were rape allegations, too. Didn't do that either.

Ex called me one day out of the blue. Like a dumb ass i answered. Figuring one of the kids as hurt or hospitalized? They weren't. She just wanted to talk. I hung up.

Got arrested again!

I got forced to plead to something I didn't do. Otherwise. They were going to charge me witness tampering, intimidation, and a host of additional things.

Worst part, no one ever asked me what happened. I could prove it didn't happen. No one cared!

After I plead, the prosecutor told the judge that the police report had to be amended. The officer how took my exes report mixed up her report with another women's and the rape allegation was from someone else. My lawyer got pissed and tried to talk to the judge. She didn't care!

Nolo plea, time served. Fines. Fees. 6 months of DV classes. 2 years probation.

And I couldn't divorce her till I got it expunged. I mean I could, but no judge would give me custody with a fresh DV conviction.

After I got it expunged, she made a series of poor choices and got some felonies. I jumped so fast.

Fast forward 10 years, I have the house. The kids. She's crashing on her mom's couch! And has nothing to her name. She lost the car I gave her in the divorce. The house she bought with the money I gave her.

She lost everything, and I don't care one bit!

I thought i couldn't get more disapointed about today world... You showed me i was wrong.
This is so criminal i have no words to discribed. It's not any diferent from being abdutec by someone and when released they intent to charge you for the food and room you had. And it's the own state. They should just pay you compensation and hope you don't mess with the media more than you should.

I would be making a fuss everywhere i could in order for them to shut up and compensate me for the rest of my life and a luxury one on top to that. You should deserve nothing less. Actually, since the system fails you before you should get not only money, but be tax free for the rest of your life! and a secured high job in a public institution since you may not get jobs otherwise since people may think you are guilty.

Its even worse than it seams.

If found innocent, he would need to pay for bed and board ( rent, and food) to the prison service for the 17 years he spent there.

Also, while he has been freed from prison, he is only out on license, and will need to prove, without reasonable doubt, his innocence. This man was prosecuted with reasonable, doubt, but needs to prove to an almost impossible degree, his innocence.
