I consider myself to be a "classical" liberal, ie what liberalism was when it actually concerned itself with the rights of individuals. Key principles:

people are individuals not just group members and deserve to be treated as such.
freedom as a default
government intervention/activity only when absolutely necessary.

I am a libertarian but am closer to a conservative. Imo in the USA both the republicans and democrats are basically evil.

None of the above. I'm an independent and I make up my mind issue to issue. Following a party or a particular political philosophy usually creates sheeple. They just go with the party line without thought or reason. I hate that. So, I stay unaffiliated. But most would say I lean liberal.

Socially: Libertarian Fiscally: Libertarian leaning conservative. Rights being the foremost issue.

[Rant, ignore it] i.e. Companies lobbying to protect market share (ISPs, twc and comcast -_- <looking at you) is wrong. A potentially proper use of government power in situations like that to produce local demi-utilities (Greenlight)so long as it is accepted using the correct local political proceedings and matching all superseding laws (for Federalism's sake, guess that's the conservative bit).

Also, since we're not all American, "liberal" as used by the American left is the opposite of what it means in the rest of the world.

American. You could consider me a conservative in the classical sense of the word. I am certainly fiscally conservative, and somewhat socially conservative. I am not morally conservative [eg do whatever you want as long as you aren't hurting anyone, and all parties are consenting.]

Ideally, I'm as far left as you can be. Realistically though, I'm probably like a 7.5/10 (With 10 being the farthest left). I understand that sometimes you have to compromise on your ideals in order to make something work.

weird. i was just wondering this the other day, but didn't want to pry into anyone's political beliefs. i'm with thrway_1000; it's issue to issue with me.

edit: i am registered as a republican, though. i don't know if that automatically puts me in the conservative category, but i certainly identify more with conservative economic policies than liberal policies, especially when it comes to how tax payer money funds government programs.

OP should probably have used the qualifier "mostly" as he seems to be confusing a lot of people. Seriously, do we need to be told that most people don't fall fully within one category? Take me, I'm way left on most things but oppose abortion on demand and affirmative action. Does that mean i'm not a leftist? Am i therefore a right wing, agnostic, socialist? I think not.

I'm both. Which sided I fall on depends on which issue you're discussing. The closest political ideology to mine is libertarian, but even that doesn't really fit.

I think most people don't fully understand what either of those words mean. The divide between the two camps is usually due to trivial wedge issues anyway.

I'd probably be called a liberal by most, but I stand strongly for individual civil rights (marriage for all, pro choice/abortion, anti-censorship, pro gun rights, abolish selective service, secularism in government with private religious freedom for all, etc).

The label that fits me best would probably be Libertarian Socialist politically, and a Utilitarian philosophically. If I could wave a magic wand and organize society as I imagine would work best, it would not resemble anything currently proposed by any political party or movement on Earth. However, working within the constraints of just little ol' me and my one vote, you might as well call me a liberal.

Neither . I used to consider myself a liberal . Then I switched sides to conservative . Then I realized that they were just the opposing sides of the same blade being thrust into my belly .

Taking a side in this case means going along with the groupthink . I don't mean that people are stupid or can't think for themselves but the minute you identify with one side or the other , the more likely you are to take a stance based on which side is supporting it .

Canadian here, so by labelling myself as a liberal I am saying that I am fairly center.

I am fiscally conservative when it comes to most economic issues.

I am socially liberal when it comes to most social issues.

When the two overlap (i.e. government spending on social programs), I tend to be more conservative, with the exception of education and health care.

It is also my belief that scientific studies and reliable data are the best tools for developing effective policy.
