This is a scary precedent. Imagine a young billionaire, who presumably doesn’t have a will and is unmarried, could hypothetically be killed, and have his sperm harvested to produce a child immediately afterward, and lay claim to the estate on behalf of the child.

Bodily autonomy is one of those concepts that is bandied about like it is a sacred principle but is really only selectively invoked when convenient to achieve some specific goal or policy. The moment that bodily autonomy is inconvenient it is cast aside. I am experiencing a lot of shadenfreud right now over the abortion issue. For the last 2 years I warned pro covid lockdown leftists and feminists that they will regret being so smug about stomping all over medical decision making and consent and now that the shoe is on the other foot they have suddenly rediscovered the importance of bodily autonomy.

You have to be alive to have bodily autonomy. I'm not entirely sure what happens to an estate if a child is born after death or even conceived after death.

Here's some bad possibilities from this:

people can argue that even if men are dead (this is being done, as stated in the article, because of a large percentage of men that are dying in war in Israel) that fertility rates can be kept up.

Anyone that couldn't care less whether men are dead or alive have more ammo to claim men aren't even needed alive to keep up birth rates. People can justify drawing sperm from dead soldiers to keep birth rates up and birthing more soldiers. No birth strike or starving a war machine as effectively carried out as in the past.

...but wait, to avoid this, men can always get a vasectomy before their death or before entering the military.

However, in places like the US, factor in the overturn of Roe v Wade and the removal of medical privacy that can extend to matters like getting a vasectomy

Then factor in how vasectomies could easily be made illegal (and that this would be more easily done if vasectomies could be tracked).

Definitely a lot of ethical and legal implications here.

My wife had told me that if she is carrying a baby and she dies in a way that her body keeps functioning, maintain her corpse as long as possible for the health of the baby. We're not gonna write this down anywhere so the doctors would have to take my word for it. I'd say sperm extraction is far less invasive that keeping her entire body functioning artificially as an incubator. It's not like she can steal a quarter of his wages for the next 20 years by having his kid.

I'm generally fine with this. Spouses should, unless there's some reason to believe otherwise (like suspected of murder) , have every form of power of attorney over eachother. Don't hold this innocent couple to feminist standards.

The question in this story is, by whose request and authority was this procedure done? I oppose assuming he'd object as much as I oppose assuming he'd approve. Someone who knew him must represent him after death, let their judgement stand.
