[+]LurkerOrHydralisk -6 points-5 points-4 points 9 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
A lot less than they take. A nominal amount compared to their cost, really.
[–]and_rice 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Unlike you, who is talking out of your ass, I was in the army for 4 years and had to get my taxes done too. There isn't some "soldier" deduction
[–]LurkerOrHydralisk -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I think you misunderstand, soldier. It costs a lot more in taxes to keep you in the military than you contribute in taxes.
[–]and_rice 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I'm not a soldier, guy. Here is a breakdown of exactly what you don't understand, so you can be a little more educated next time you attempt to have this conversation. Firstly though, you've decided to take the coward's way out and set the only measurable criteria as the amount "you contribute in taxes,"
It costs a lot more in taxes to keep you in the military than you contribute in taxes.
which is moronic. Of course the DOD spends more on pay than the soldiers contribute in taxes. How in the world do you figure a better alternative? Should the employees of the military end up being taxed more than the total amount they make throughout the year?
That argument is too retarded to touch, so here are some facts. Keep note of the date associated with each figure, as the information may not always represent budget percentages of the same year. It is intended to give you a ballpark idea of the dollar values used.
In 2016, The DOD was allotted $634.2 billion, which was about 16% of the total budget. Of that, how much do you think is being spent on soldiers at all? 50 percent maybe? 70?
"Roughly one-quarter of the Department of Defense’s budget is for military personnel" https://www.cbo.gov/topics/defense-and-national-security/military-personnel
These guys must be getting paid pretty well, because $158 billion is still a STAGGERING 4% of your tax dollars!
Does all that money go only to soldiers? While 1.4 million military personnel serve on active duty, a total of nearly 10 million people are eligible for military health benefits. In addition to active-duty military personnel, the people who have access to health benefits include eligible family members of those personnel, retired military personnel and their eligible family members, survivors of service members who died while on active duty, and some members of the reserves and National Guard. https://www.cbo.gov/publication/43574 (second paragraph after "military compensation includes...") That figure is from 2013
So, of the 4% of your tax dollars that go to military personnel, service members make up about 14% of the 10 million people covered by that chunk of funds.
[–]LurkerOrHydralisk -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
My statement about taxes was in response to another, but if we're going that route: what reason, if any, should I subsidize military and their family's healthcare when mine is so expensive? If we're not going to have full coverage for everyone, I don't see why my taxes should be spent on others, especially non active duty and their families.
Using 16% of the total taxes as your figure is disingenuous. Our FY2017 discretionary budget is $1.2T, which is those not taxed and allocated separately, such as SS, Medicare (which is its own issue, but mostly in the discrimination), etc.
So our $582B DoD budget is 48% of our discretionary budget. This doesn't include the $47B for Homeland Security, which is its own bullshit which is primarily pork and doesn't really benefit us. It also doesn't include the VA's $75B, which is another cost of the military. So we're looking at 58% of the discretionary budget so far for defense related activities, and we haven't even included the state department's $52B, much of which could be considered related to defense.
Compare this to parts of our taxes which aren't so wasteful and are more necessary than a bloated military, such as energy at $30B, education at $69B, Health and Human Services at $78B, and NASA at $18B, which contributions to provide a whopping $14 to the economy for every dollar contributed.
When our schools are failing, our public health is atrocious, India is setting world records in space, and we're being outpaced by China in renewable energy, can we really afford such a bloated, pork filled, inefficient military, just so Dick Cheney can afford another yacht? I'd say no.
I'm not saying the military is unnecessary. I am saying that every soldier that signs up is contributing to the problem, as is everyone who votes for representatives who pass pro military legislature.

I understand nuance, but anyone currently supporting the overly bloated military is contributing to the military industrial complex Eisenhower warned us about that is wreaking havoc on the prosperity of America.
One might argue of course, that if there was no US military in the first place, a lot of those problems you stated wouldn't need solving.

K, thanks.
I never said no military. But reports have shown we could cut a significant amount from the military budget with no negative effects on national security. We could have avoided two trillion dollars in complete waste on war that did not make us any safer without warmongering nutjobs like you buying the pro military propaganda.
[–]krisadayo -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
You clearly don't understand the point of the U.S. military if you think that warring is its main purpose. Just remember that the U.S. Navy protected the trade route of the ship that imported your phone/computer from China next time you decide to criticize it. It's like you're trying to destroy the foundation that your life is built upon you darn fool.
I understand the necessity of a military, but also respect the damage that a bloated one can do. I want to improve the lives of all Americans by allowing our tax dollars to go to more constructive purposes than military waste
[–]rocklobster3 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
What the fuck. She is completely wrong. A career in the military can be an amazing and fullfilling thing. You will get benefits, you will have a stable income, and you will get to be apart of something far far greater than yourself. The military offers so many career paths the options are basically endless. Plus if you choose to you can get a free education after you serve. The armed forces are certainly not for everyone, but for a lot of people it's a life changing thing. It opens up so many doors, and it helps them find out their interests, passions, and their skills.
In the end you get to serve your country, be apart of something incredible, make so many connections with other people, a career (if you choose that route), an education, discipline, and life long friends.
You obviously are an uneducated dipshit if you agree with any of what that retard in the post said. I mean seriously, you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Maybe you should do a little research next time before you open your dumbass mouth. You're only making yourself look like an uniformed and over opinionated imbecile.

Jesus, man. Please educate us on trademarks, restrictions and patents while you're gracing us with your presence.
[–]MisterDorimant0 points 9 years ago* [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link
Okay. Off the cuff.
Trademarks are a certain set of uniquely identifiable words, images, slogans, etc. The uniqueness comes about by using a particular font or logo. Such marks are used to brand products sold by merchants and are the sole property of that merchant. It is up to the merchant to protect his brand from counterfeiting.
Restrictions are likewise imposed on a merchant's goods, typically in the form of contract or licensing that dictate usage. For example, the EULAs that most computer users click through without reading contain a list of restrictions that they agree to by clicking.
A patent is a set of exclusive rights obtained by an inventor for a limited period of time in exchange for detailed public disclosure of an invention. An invention is a solution to a specific technological problem in the form of a product, method, or process, but cannot be an idea.
It is worth noting that this is all according to US law. In other countries, the laws may be entirely different or nonexistent.

To be honest, you don't owe people in the military anything. They chose a proffesion and get paid for doing so. So i can understand getting annoyed by all the positive army talk. Which America, i think has plenty of.
[–]TriggerHippie77 41 points42 points43 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Anecdotal story that kind of relates. I had a good friend in high school and college who decided to join the Army in 2001, I went the separate route and joins the Sheriff's Department. We both spent about four years in our respective professions, he left with a college degree paid for, lifelong healthcare, and a truckload of other benefits. I left the Sheriff's office with PTSD, majorly in debt (I only made $27k a year supporting a family of three and a college education), and a life long medical issue. He always thought it was fucked up how differently I was treated for my sacrifices vs his. I never felt entitled to anything at all, and neither did he. People would thank him for his service and he'd say "thank this man for his too." After long discussions we realized it just came down to people's interactions with us when we we're in our careers. You talk to a military guy in uniform in America, generally it's under somewhat good circumstances, not the same with cops generally those ones aren't so good and I suppose that creates a difference for some. Anyways, just though all of it was interesting how we treat military members above all others, as we should when warranted, but others who do similar and often more dangerous work aren't looked at the same.
[–]notaplacebo 16 points17 points18 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Thanks for the perspective man. I agree both should be treated with the same respect and gratitude. Neither are easy jobs to do and both are done to protect and serve fellow Americans. I hope your life is in a good place now.
[–]Dodgiestyle 11 points12 points13 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I agree. I spent 4 years in the US Army but I was a stevedore, a dock worker. And while I was deployed to Saudi Arabia during Desert Shied/Storm, I really didn't do much else. People thank me and I appreciate that, but it really was no different than any other job. Certainly not what you went through if it gave you PTSD and a lifelong medical issue. I hope you're doing well and thank you for doing your part to protect citizens.

They are owed the pay and other benefits they sign up for. The bigger issue is an implied contract of respect. Some think they are owed respect because part of our society implies such a notion. Such implied agreements are numerous in out society and can get people to do things they otherwise would not, but often even pointing them out is seen as violating social norms.

No, usually a shitty meal on Veterans Day, free National Park passes, or 10% discounts at random places. Its not much, and most people dont give a damn about them.
Personally, a simple thank you is all most people need, and even then most military members dont even care about that.
Most people just dont understand the simple fact that you dont have to respect or agree with the military, and the military will fight for you to have that opinion.

[–]oss_spy -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Because being a soldier is the epitome of the image of manliness. Square jawed, barrel chested, and tall - no wonder impotent <20 year olds feel threatened.
[–]jhindle 10 points11 points12 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Yea, cuz all those females who join definitely want square jaws and barrel chest to fulfill there desires for manliness.
Sounds like someone is projecting their insecurities.
[–]oss_spy -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I'm not talking about how service members feel. I'm talking about how the butthurt and angry manlets feel.

[–]I_RARELY_RAPE_PEOPLE 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
That's ok, but the point being discussed is military service does not immediately mean you demand respect because of your service.
And many people think it does.

[–]I_RARELY_RAPE_PEOPLE 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Zero reason to be sassy here about a topic that isn't even intended to spawn an argument.
And it sometimes does. An unfortunate amount of veterans have the mindset that they are better than others due to their service, even if their service was zero-action, zero- danger, little-importance. NOT ALL are those meatheads though.
And then many people, especially Americans, see military service of any form, as something to be worshipped, applauded, and saluted as though these people defend our doors at night from monsters, when most of the time, they haven't done anything close to an actual defense of anything

no affect on your own life.
I'm treated differently if I don't show the same blind-adoration of my country's service members. I'm treated like an asshole that has zero respect for people that 'sacrifice everything to protect my freedom' if I don't worship someone that spent maybe a year deployed.....in a country that had no danger and was honestly something that person gloats about and wishes for nothing more than to go back.
I live in a country where we spend more on military than the next 10 (I'm probably wrong on the number) countries combined on the list...and those 10 are our allies. My taxes go towards it. I know how worthless millions of those dollars are when funneled into that direction, due to overspending and untracked spending with zero punishments.
But dare I question these things? I am unpatriotic and an asshole with no respect and hate freedom and my country.
[–]PhantomKlark1 points 9 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link
You know why you spend that much? You might need some education: NATO is almost entirely funded by the US alone. I think the US spends on NATO more than the next 10 countries under the treaty. But worry not, Trump will make the EU pay for their protection.
[–]Justinw303 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Sorry but that's not really true for all military members. First off not all of them are in it for the good of the nation - some just know it's their only option to make a decent living in life.
Second, there's no real threats to our nations security at present day that we need an active engagement for. The police are doing a hell of a lot more in modern day than guys signing up to fight oil proxy wars so they have a chance at a free college degree.
[–]UniversalFapture 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Thats true. 100% . But still, that bothers people like me.
[–]Arsenault185 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
But on the flip side (ignoring argument about the oil proxy war bullshit) what were to happen of we didn't have a strong standing military?
There aren't a lot of threats because we have the military we do.
[–]GourmetCoffee 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's not about whether or not we need one - we do - it's about the true intentions of those going in vs. what they tell everyone.
There's a big difference between "I signed up for the potential of defending our nation against a threat to its freedom." and "I defended our nation against threats to its freedom."
But due to the size of our military and advancements in technology, any kind of WWIII or large scale ground battle is unlikely.
I just wish they would accept that people can respect the danger of what they do without having the "I did it FOR YOU!" shoved down their throat, because it's BS most of the time.
[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

That is true, like every U.S. military intervention they made to contain communism countrys, that weren't even attacking them but because USA have the tanks they feel entitled to convert them to capitalism. And many other things that didn't touch them but they still felt the need to take part to take benefits. You are the uninformed brainwashed unintellifent repeatin things you heard like a parrot. I bet 70% of the population doesn't know 5 countries besides usa, and they are uninformed faggots like you repeating what their media says to them.

Have you ever seen someone get thanked for their service live in person? I get thanked now and then and it's kind of awkward. Nobody wants that shit but we have to put on a good face for people that thank us. It's nice to feel like Americans have our back, but that's what Veterans Day is for. I just want to go about my business but at the same time I'm never going to be ungrateful for someone thanking me.
[–]tossout4121 points 9 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link
It's incredibly common in the Bible belt. I've traveled quite a bit and there's a massive difference there. At the big events, there is almost always a "thanks to the troops" and it's fairly common for people to thank vets in their uniforms.
[–]Arsenault185 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm recruiting in Maine, and it happens alllllll the time. Yeah it's nice and all, but I'd really rather it not happen at all.
[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points-2 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, you're absolutely right. It's custom in America to begin every conversation with "God Bless Our Troops." Actually, in my state it's against the law, and you can be sent to prison, if you don't call a vet every day and tell them what a hero they are. Idk if you've seen it, but the new US Marine Army Special Forces Delta Seal unit uniforms have little capes on the back.

[–]tossout4127 points 9 years ago [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link
Teachers are overworked and underpaid, and Cops are too and comparable odds of injury or death over their career yet if it happens to come up in a conversation that Sally Sue is a teacher or Bobby is a patrolman, we don't get down and suck them off the same way we do when degenerate Mikey, who killed two of his dogs as a kid, reminds us for the third time this hour how his tour was right in Turban Territory.
[–]YuriDiAaaaaaah 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That's a spicy strawman. I'll respond in kind, it's great that the former high school bully turned into a cop, now he'll get the respect he desperately needs. Oh, we better also respect that teacher when she statutorily rapes one of her underage students. Oh we better respect that pussy redditor that's done nothing for his country at all.
[–]Arsenault185 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Unpopular opinion. I think considering the entry requirements, the job, and the rewards, a vast majority of vets are compensated very well overall for their service. There is no need to praise them like they did this great service out of the goodness of their heart.
Everyone i know that was ever deployed was basically an extended camping trip in the desert with endless shenanigans. I just think that thanking vets is a remnant from when deployment would have been fucking terrifying.
[–]Daddy007FTW -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Considering the volatile state that the world is in, you're honestly going to tell us that voluntarily joining the military, when it is highly possible that one might be thrown into active combat, is the equivalent of "an extended camping trip"? You're out of your mind.
Anyone willing to take that kind of risk has my respect.
[–]TadaceAce 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Highly? In the last decade the percentage of people who saw any sort of combat during deployment is single digits. Something like 93% never leave base (aka, camping trip).
Unpopular opinion or not I've got friends that served across all four branches and none of them would disagree that their military service was absolutely worth it for the perks and doors it opened. They don't care about the praise.
[–]Daddy007FTW 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
And I have family that are veterans. Thankfully none of them saw front line combat. Still, that's a hell of a gamble one takes to have a door opened for them. Plus, I don't know of any white collar jobs that require my attending a boot camp.

But GODDAMN she got obliterated.
[–]assault_rifle_ -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
So putting your life on the line, being away from your family for months, years at a time gets more respect than deserved? Vets come back with limbs blown off or highly depressed and sometimes not at all. Step in their shoes and then you can say that. And if I'm not mistaken I've never met a vet that goes around bragging or demanding respect. Please tell me a position that deserves more respect. There aren't many that put your life on the line.
[–]Mr_Tomernator 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
look at police officers. their lives get pretty shaken around too, and they get a fraction of the respect of anyone in the military. yes, people in the military deserve respect, but it sometimes gets taken overboard. others that deserve inmense respect as well often get overlooked by the same people that bow down to those in the military.
[–]Justinw303 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
No one asked or forced you to join the army, but you wanted a paycheck so you did it. Bravo. Don't expect me to stand and clap for you at a baseball game, give you my seat, or thank you for your service. You're just someone with a dangerous job. Big whoop.

I'm not in the army and if I was I wouldn't want you to treat me any differently. No one in service wants to be treated special because of that. But if you say they get more respect than they deserve, what position would you have more respect for? Makes no sense bro.
