Basics with Babish on youtube is a good place to start for a visual learner. Or go to a thrift store near you and flip through the cookbooks until you find one with handwritten notes. If you have the finances to allow for frequent takeout, a meal subscription plan might also be a good jumping off point for you.

Something really easy you can start with is spaghetti with meat sauce. Learn to brown some ground beef (a very simple task). Once the meat is cooked, pour a jar of whichever pre made tomato sauce you’d like into the skillet over the meat and let it simmer for a few minutes. Once you get the hang of that, you can experiment with adding extra stuff like sautéed onions, mushrooms, garlic, peppers, etc.

Learning to cook is basically just following the instructions on the recipe. The only way to get better is to learn from doing it. You have to just start if you have the desire to learn to cook. Make a simple meal plan, you don't have to cook anything super fancy. You could still have one night a week where you order takeout. Definitely look for some crockpot and one pan recipes to break up your meal plan with easy, but delicious homemade meals. Pinterest have every recipe you could imagine. Good luck, you can do this!

I try to replicate the meals we had at home by trial-error since I have seen at least some parts of the cooking process. I also bought book with traditional recipes of my country - that style is to my liking. Of course, I try to ask my parents for the recipes that seem easy enough as well.

I think you can start with just asking yourself what types of cuisine you like the most and which restaurants you usually order from. Then after you identify what your taste is I’d look into simple meals from that cuisine – that way you’ll probably enjoy it a little bit more and not get discouraged.

I really like this site for simple meals recipes: https://www.lecremedelacrumb.com Many of them don’t require loads of ingredients which I think is a big plus when you’re just starting to get into cooking. And like somebody mentioned before: YouTube! I love Pro Home Cooks – in some of the videos he explains the basics of cooking and he also provides heaps of ideas for simple meals (and not so simple as well, but I wouldn’t focus on those yet.)

Start with the better homes and gardens cookbook and watch a few cooking videos on YouTube. You can start small and practice with something that sounds tasty! You'll probably be a really great cook one day :)

You won't go from ordering take out 14 meals a week to cooking 14 homemade meals in just a few days. Just won't happen. So, don't stress about weekly meal plans and grocery shopping lists. You're going to get overwhelmed.

I'd suggest you start to choose ONE meal to cook. Pasta is easy. Eggs or beans are easy. If you truly can't cook anything, you can start with these. I gather from your comments that you don't know how to shop for groceries either - I'll explain the absolute basics then. If you know them already, ignore me :)

Once you choose your meal, look for recipes. There are websites and youtube channels with recipes for children - they're great because they explain everything. How to measure ingredients, how to wash and prep them, etc.

So, you chose your first recipe. Now you can write down your shopping list. Let's say you want to make pasta with tomato sauce, and a simple salad with hard boiled eggs. You'll need pasta, tomato sauce, some appropriate veggies (lettuce? Tomatoes? Whatever really), eggs, olive oil and salt. You go to the store, buy only what you need (whatever catches your eye - brand is irrelevant at this point) and then just follow the recipe step by step. Put cold water in a pot; heat the water; measure your pasta; etc.

The following week, maybe you could try adding some vegetables to your sauce, or frying your eggs, or cooking rice instead of pasta. Learn small things one at a time. They'll soon add up :)

I was given a hard plastic box with recipe cards inside. Some set my grandmother had collected from Betty Crocker over the years. I began to make each recipe (except the Aspics) until I found some dishes I really enjoyed making and eating. There were failures, like whatever that green bean tuna monstrosity was in 2005. Overall having grown up in a big Italian family and having always been posted in the kitchen with the other women (and my grandfather) while they cooked gave me a love of cooking. Now, cooking is my absolute favorite task ^my ^least ^favorite ^is ^sock ^matching ^but ^that’s ^a ^complaint ^for ^another ^time. I try to make a new recipe I find once a week. Lately we’ve discovered the kids all love Ratatouille and Borch.

My mom wasn’t a good cook so I learned to make easy stuff as a kid/teen. Meals don’t need to be full on recipes or fancy. Frozen veggies speed up time and are just as healthy. Buddha bowls and well really any bowl is easy. You cook a grain (rice, farro, potatoes, quinoa, cous cous, etc), a veggie or two, a protein or two (meat, fish, lentils, chickpeas, veggie based meat, tofu, etc) and a sauce (doesn’t have to be homemade Trader Joe’s has a lot). Sometimes add toppings like cheese and you’re set. You can cook Middle Eastern, “Asian”, Indian, Tex Mex, and many more cuisines just from this formula. It’s best to stock your pantry with the basics and get used to basic meal prep. Maybe for 1-2 meals a week pick a recipe and get the ingredients for it. But going from never cooking to recipes everyday may be overwhelming. Not all meals need to be fancy to taste good. Just splurge a bit on some of the ingredients. Use fresh lemon, quality eevo, grated parmesan, fresh garlic/frozen garlic cubes/garlic paste, fresh pasta from the refrigerator section or atleast better dried ones, black pepper freshly ground, etc. When making pasta reserve a cup of pasta water to add to the sauce. It helps it stick better. I like to cook noodles to aldente then add them to the sauce and cook them in that until my preferred doneness.

Food subscription boxes (every plate is $5/meal <$2 for the first couple boxes and is easy) are what I recommend to people new to cooking. It’s super convenient since you don’t have to find a recipe, get the ingredients, and go shopping. All the steps are there and it guides you through each step. If you’re in the us emeals is great. You pick recipes from their site and it adds all the ingredients into your Walmart online cart. And then just add the other items you want for the week then you pick delivery or pickup.

What I do for recipes is I just Google stuff. And I have some cookbooks. When I find a recipe that has good reviews and looks interesting I save it. I’m in the process of making my own personal cookbook from all the recipes I’ve tried and enjoyed.

If you’re halfway through the week and don’t know what to make but don’t want to go grocery shopping supercook is great. You put in all your pantry ingredients and it finds recipes for you.

Also find meals that don’t need much or any cooking to reduce the urge to eat out. A bagged salad and tortilla wraps, hummus w/veg and pita, sandwiches, frozen stir fries, healthier frozen meals, eggs & toast, etc.

OP.. You have literally every recipe the world has ever known at your fingertips.. So if you REALLY wanted or needed to cook something, there's nothing stopping you..

Now if you want to get motivated to learn how to cook, just tally up the TOTAL monthly cost of your current eating habits. (This makes most folks crap themselves when they see how much they actually spend..)

Now, do a bit of research on your own and you'll see that you can actually make better food for literally pennies on the dollar..

THEN think about what else you can do with that money.. Save for a house, upgrade your vehicle, go to school w/o loans..

But, ultimately, this choice is yours..

Well start with what you want to learn how to cook. Make a list, then choose something simple and either post to r/cooking along for advice or Google and go with a week rated recipe. Follow it exactly and see what you think. Ideally print it out and write notes about what you think about it. As you get the hang of it you can tweak recipes to be more to your liking. Maybe try a different style of cooking like broil vs searing. For adjusting seasonings the amount you put in to adjust varies by seasoning. For example Bay leaves are very potent.

I'm happy to swap recipes or give advice. Cooking is fun and relaxing to me. Knowing how also means you can start your kids off young. My 15 month old helps me in the kitchen. I learned from my mom.

Go on the internet and learn to cook pasta. Then add pesto. Very easy. Learning to cook bacon is super easy too. I am not even that good at cooking.

Literally YouTube. I found a YouTuber named chef zee who cooks traditional Latin cuisine that I grew up with and once I started making her recipes I recognized the scents and flavors from my childhood and got hooked! I think try finding a YouTuber that posts recipe videos of cuisine you’re culturally connected to. It helps with motivation and feeling like you’re “adulting” like the adults you saw cooking while growing up!

After about a month I felt super equipped and proud of myself. Everyone loved my cooking so much I am now regularly asked to make important dishes for holiday meals and what not. That really makes me feel like I’ve made it lol

Cookbooks from the library before the time of high speed internet. I asked my mom to teach me to cook since my dad was adamant no man wanted to marry a woman who couldn't cook, and I really wanted to get married one day. But my mom refused to teach me because her mother never taught her. 🙄

Since I was a kid I always had a big interest in cooking and baking (and well, all food in general lol) but my mother hates cooking and baking. Did then, still does. She was always on a diet which resulted in a lot of salad, brown rice, and bland meats. I love my mom and honestly she was/is an incredible mom but she had always been devoid of any interest in cooking.

SO when I moved out at 18 to go to college I made it my mission to learn how to cook well. I started with really basic things - simple cookies, rice, omelets, roasted potatoes, stir fried vegetables - and worked my way up. In terms of resources to use, I started with Food Network and YouTube. Pinterest is a gold mine also. I lived in an apartment from 2008-2016 so I got tons of practice and time to figure out which recipes I liked and wanted to perfect and which ones I didn’t.

I’m 33 now and my love for cooking and baking is more alive than ever. I still continue to learn how to make new meals, treats, etc every week. It is absolutely possible to develop major cooking skills even if you are 100% self taught. Start small, figure out what you enjoy best, what your best meal is, and perfect it over time. And always try to have fun:)))

Start getting used to easy stuff at first. For example, make a salad instead of ordering out. Put cheese, ham, tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce or spinach, peppers, oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, thyme into a bowl and boom you have a meal. It helps you to practice cutting some veggies without having to cook. Another one is sandwiches, those are super easy to make homemade. Oatmeal for breakfast is easy too. Once you're more used to eating things you've made, you could try cooking basic stuff like scrambled eggs and toast, baked veggies, pan-seared chicken.

I highly recommend watching cooking videos while you eat. Once you watch enough, you'll have a great base knowledge of cooking skills to help you execute any recipe.
