Took cold showers for a whole month straight as an experiment. The first two weeks had the most results. Had more energy and my hair looked fuller due to the fact I used to take hot showers which are known to dry out your hair. I had more focus in getting things done. Near the end of the month I wasnt getting as much of the effects it had in the beginning. My hair and skin looked a littler nicer but my mind and body grew accustomed to the cold. First week was the hardest when it came to convincing myself to just jump in. Near the end my mentality changed and I would tell myself "stop being a bitch and get it over with." Try it for a month and see how you feel. Its a good way to add a bit of confidence to yourself knowing you have the discipline to follow through it.

For real?? had never even thought about this.
[–]g4casting1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
That's easily the most noticeable change. Your hair and skin improve significantly if you stop taking hot showers. Personally my skin became more elastic and even, healthier basically after a week.
[–]bznj 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
well I'm starting with hot temp and gradually cool it down. It's not easy... I've always had dry hair and average skin. Sounds great to try harder
[–]twomeows2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Don't do it gradual. Just do it

Interesting. What are the physical benefits when you have a cold shower?
[–]Highpressa 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Brown fat is what insulates you from cold and if you don't exercise being in cold your brown fat will diminish.
I'm not sure if cold exposure is good for your immune system or is it that it's good for your immune system because it's good for brown fat, but either way the end result is the same. Haven't had a flu since I started timing cold showers in the morning. But it has to be cold I don't think you'll be getting much health benefits from a pleasantly chilly shower.

Increased blood flow, reduction in cortisol concentrations (hormone responsible for human nutrition but in high quantities can cause weight gain, acne, thin and fragile skin) and reduction in body inflammation.
Check out these links for more:

Elliot Hulse's 'Dude, Take A Cold Shower!' Anecdotal but this dude is fucking gold.
[–][deleted] 43 points44 points45 points 9 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link
I would think cold showers would be extremely stressful on the body and increase cortisol levels, not reduce them.
I'm still not entirely unconvinced that cold showers aren't just an awful meme. Just because something is painful and hard to do doesn't mean it's beneficial.
That being said I found this in the study you linked:
Drinking water significantly elevates the resting energy expenditure (REE) in adults
I already drink tons of water but hey, good to know.

Not that it isn't commonly put forth(I have no idea) but in all the times I've heard people talk about cold showers and the benefits it's been from a purely mental fortitude aspect.
I'm gonna actually start to try it when it's not so damn cold outside.

I have a recording app in which I mark down the days where I didn't take a cold shower.
I found something interesting.
If I didn't take a cold shower for 2-3 days continuously then either 1) I'm going to be sick or 2) I'm going to make mistakes and loose a lot of money while trading (I'm a trader).
Never cared about the physical benefits but the mental ones are tremendous. It's like stepping out of the comfort zone.
[–]adonis8 points points points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
You sound the like baseball players who, when they get on a hot streak, refuse to change their underwear. Really a crazy attitude for someone whose trades should be studied and deliberate.
Also, you get sick to much. See a doctor or something because if you get sick more than once a year, twice tops, something's up.
[–]1THRILLHOUSE0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Depends on the sickness. Couple of colds a year is no biggie. Serious infections I'll agree with.
[–]dpape390 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think it means you may need to wear more and/or warmer clothes though.
[–]Ozymanberg0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
*Seriously sick. I used to get annoying colds about 4-5 times a year but they weren't a big deal.
Fun fact: I haven't gotten sick with an annoying cold in a long time ever since I started taking NAC. Sure, I get a stuffy nose but never fully sick. If you guys get sick a lot, check this shit out and binge on Vitamin C.

I have been taking cold showers non stop for the last 9 months, and I love it. But in your case maybe it is the effect, not the cause.
Think of it like this, life is like riding a wave, you have ups and downs. When you are starting to loose energy, first symptom would be not finding the courage to go into the cold shower, than a couple of days later you start to loose money.
I am not saying the cold shower works, I believe the opposite. But your situation may be different. Just a food for thought

[–]Shadoscuro0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Agreed. Even if not from a physical health perspective but mentally it is pushed like some form of major enlightenment or fortitude. Like ffs it's a shower get in and do your stuff and get out in 5 mins. That's my mental fortitude, leaving the "warm comfort zone" and getting on with my day. I don't need cold water to make me be productive.

Body improves from being stressed. Spinach includes some very toxic toxins but because they are in such small quantities they are actually beneficial.
[–]CountCuntila1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
"Toxin" isn't a respected scientific term. The dose is what makes a substance "toxic". I agree with the positive benefits of stressing the body, but the terms toxic and toxin belong on natural news
[–]Highpressa 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Jesus fucking nitpick batman. There are compounds in spinach that are neurotoxic or poisonous or whatever in larger quantaties. People understand that toxin means not good for you.
[–]CountCuntila6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
You're missing the point. They are not neurotoxic, they are not poisonous. The dose makes something poisonous, not the substance. What you mean to say is "they're are harmless substances in spinach, which at a high enough dose could be harmful" which makes no fucking sense as everything is harmful in a high enough dose. "I don't know what I'm talking about, but I read something on Facebook about spinach" would sum up your first statement
[–]Highpressa 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
No dude you are missing the point. You are that dude that misses the whole picture and instead of taking the lesson tangles on to some meaningless detail. Like you have done here with the definition of what is toxic, toxin or poisonous or that it's about the dose, you are that neckbeard. But I will twist it out of iron for you.
The point is the body improves from stress that damages it.
In this context I used spinach as an example that includes a harmful substance to humans. It's not like VitaminD that is a building block for essential functions of the body, it's an agent that causes damage and because it causes damage it induces a stress reaction which is beneficial to the body. At some point it was a health craze to boil spinach to get rid of this agent, because it was not understood that inducing damage can actually be healthy.
[–]CountCuntila0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's simply not true, you're whole point is false.
Fair point though, I did go full neck beard

This. I have done cold showers in the past and can't say I notice an enormous difference. Can anyone speak to the benefit?
[–]panties_[S] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
How long did you take these showers for and at what temps?
[–]Mrmayhemful5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Not him but I have also tried cold showers.
Normally about 5 minute showers, I don't know the exact temp but not the coldest my shower would go but pretty close to it. Just enough so it wasn't so cold it was taking my breath away.
[–]Highpressa 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The whole point is to induce a cold shock effect. So you've been taking slightly chill shower not cold showers in this context.
A completely opposite example is heat shock which induces your body to release various beneficial hormones. Here is the the end of the youtube link watch?v=eWKBsh7YTXQ . You can also search for "Rhonda Pattrick Sauna" and clikc on the first link.
I crank it all the way, 40 seconds upper body, 20 seconds legs. You get better at controlling the breath but it's part of the process that you grasp for breath.
[–]RobertCarraway0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
This describes mine pretty well too
[–]PM_Your_8008s0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Try going to the absolute coldest setting possible. I don't go cold straight through, but rather start warm and put it on as cold as possible for the last 2-3 minutes. That's where I've noticed the most benefit. I recall in the past I tried to ease my way down from warm to cold over time and shit like that never worked for me, it was only when I started just going all out and accepting the cold shock that I noticed any benefit.
[–]mara5a0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I have a regular 2-3 minutes warm shower and finish off with about 1 minute of coldest freezing water possible. I am a sweaty person. Cooling of my body by cold shower simply negates the sweating I'd experience immediately after stepping out of warm steamy shower.
[–]2comment17 points18 points19 points 9 years ago* (7 children) | Copy Link
When I started, the easiest way to begin cold showering was to have it normal temperature and after X amount of minutes turn it down some notches, then after a while, some more. The short warm intro period absolutely killed off the step-in hesitation I experienced.
Like a 10 minute shower, I gave myself a 3 minute introductory period. At first, lukewarm even felt cold. I think it took me 4 days to even get to the coldest point at the very end of the shower. By the end of week 2, I'd just take 90 second intros and then snap it all the way to cold for the rest.
[–]james_the_dean3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
interesting, I experienced the exact opposite. It was much harder to go from lukewarm to cold because when you get comfortable it's much worse ( at least for me).
After a few weeks of cold showers, hesitation was much less prevalent. When I feel like not doing something, I just hump into it, just like with the freezing water.
But... to each his own. Maybe your advice will help out many men here.
[–]captainzoomer4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
No! Step into a cold shower, do not ease into it! How do you adapt to a cold swim? Easing in only prolongs the inevitable shock of slipping out of your comfort zone. Step in, fight the urge to inhale and accept that the water is cold. After your breathing regulates, you will find the water is actually cleaner? more refreshing?

Your post reminds me of a similar BP attitude where anything a man does for self improvement is ridiculous.
Don't you even dare suggest to your friends that stopping or slowing down on your consumption of pornography could be beneficial. What are you a fucking moron? Are you stupid?
Don't tell anyone your life has improved since going to the gym or doing physical activities. Are you a meat head bro?
I've never tried the cold shower thing and it definitely is pretty overhyped in TRP. It could be for good reason, I don't know. But if it helps some men, I don't think it should be flippantly dismissed as "nonsense".

Only thing is maybe not to shower hot all the time because it dries your skin. Having itchy skin especially in winter when showering hotter? Turn it down a notch and the itching likely will go away.
If it supposedly is good to be conditioned for the cold for brown fat (source needed), just turn down your heating a couple notches. I mean why do you need it warm and comfortable in your home? You have it warmer than 60F inside? Are you a blue pill pussy or what?

[–]JFMX19962 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I went a full year without any hot water in my senior year of high school back before the whole cold shower hype. There weren't a lot of resources so I sort of had to figure out my own way at the time.
Well, the way I'd start off was that I'd get in, start with a normal shower, and then turn it off to pure cold water when I'd be in. I did this for a few weeks, and then started just getting into the shower and starting the water that way as opposed to waiting outside the tub and stepping into the falling water. It was a simple change but a lot more efficient and badass in a way for me. I had to just get in and wait for the extreme cold to wake me up.
Where I live it gets really cold, snows like crazy at times and the water pipes get frozen. While most guys are out bitching that the waters not warming up, it's you whose saying "Fuck it, more fun" and jumping in and taking an awesome cold shower.
This carried over into developing grit and discipline, always doing what I have to even when I don't feel like it. I also enjoyed the euphoria of the cold rush. Getting yourself to just let the water fall and not start breathing all weird and prancing around is a good goal, just staying in for a full minute and letting the water really get your head, face, and back is good.
I've been back into it for around 2 months now and it's awesome.

I would love to benefit from cold showers. Unfortunately, I am cursed with ingrown hairs. Take a hot shower at least twice a day that opens my pores and then scrubbing any dirt off me is imperative.
If I don't do that then ingrown hairs can become a real problem.

[–]1BoogersAreTasty0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I just scrub myself with soap and hot water at least twice per day. Now the problem is that doing that can result in dry skin, so I have moisturize once in a while.
But ingrown hairs can be miserable. If you don't keep them under control, you'll end up having to go to the dermatologist and he'll have to cut them out. I've had minor out patient surgery about 10 times in my youth to have that done. I finally wised up and now shower when I wake up and shower before I go to bed. On the days I workout, I shower after the workout too.
I just don't take any chances. If I feel slightly dirty or sweaty, I just take a very hot very soapy/scrubby 3 minute shower.

This is a great post, dude.

That's pretty Alpha but if you could do that after a 2 year stretch of nofap while maintaining a smirk of amused mastery you'd be truly RP

Welp, found the overweight mangina's troll throwaway account.

That's exactly what I thought. Some stupid fuck is going to do this because he read it on this sub....

Im thinking about washing my hair with warm water as well because I get brainfreeze everytime. Can't imagine that beeing healthy. Am I the only one with that problem?

Unless you are training to be a Navy SEAL or to escape Alcatraz Island, there is no need for a cold shower.
[–]HRpuffystuff0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yeah this is some cultist bullshit
[–]notcarl0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Not sure I buy all the health benefits. But it wakes you the fuck up. It's uncomfortable. And like anything hard, you feel better afterwards.
[–]Burrito_Capital0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Wim Hof "Iceman" has a good view on why cold is good for you....
[–]dammit_redskins0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
People here act like cold showers are the fucking messiah.
[–]ArkAngelEV0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Don't let cold shower gain an inch. It'll take a mile. #notonmywatchcoldshower
Ime, cold showers do pretty good to kickstart me into the day. The shock helps and the cold water takes away the stuffiness in my face. So I would recommend it. Though contrast showers are good to help you relax yet keep you sharp, so you guys might want to check that out, too.
That being said, the fact that you put TRP imagery so seriously into something as perfunctory as a shower makes it look like a cartoon parody of a post. Really? Resorting to Blue Beta Billy shaming in order to make a shower RP amd manly?
Whatever really. To each their own.
[–]redpillnexus0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Cold showers are ridiculously uncomfortable though. If you can provide real scientific studies proving that they're beneficial, I might start doing them, but right now I don't care how blue pill they are, I like warm showers.
I started doing cold showers about a few weeks ago and haven't looked back. Once you get used to them, it feels soothing on the skin. It's also a lot easier to leave a cold shower, than a hot shower. I feel like I have noticed some other physical benefits as well.
Anyone here ever heard of the Wim Hof method? Just curious... he makes some interesting claims, and seems to have the goods to back it up.
Cold is not bad thing. It is unexplored, uncharted territory. Our bodies can do a lot more. We just need to learn how to do it.
I really recommend checking Wim Hoff. His book is badly written but full of interesting stuff.

ITT: People who haven't even fucking tried scottish or cold showers on a regular basis (more than a few times) and find it easier to be divisive than appreciate another viewpoint.
I do it because it wakes me up and it's a challenge I get to face every morning. I don't give a shit if people think its' RP or blue pill or whatever the fuck they want to say.
The fact is that it's about discipline and challenging yourself. How far can you take it?
I spent 95 seconds submerged in a freezing lake yesterday just to see if I could. And I did it with a clam, collected control. Not just women, but everyone respects that and it carries over to other challenges in your life.
Fuck all the haters who don't have the balls to try or to challenge themselves.

I have freezing cold showers. I spent about 40 mins in the shower as well as I have long hair and I just can't do it any quicker. Honestly what is the big fucking deal? What am I supposedly achieving? Will power? Once I'm in there it's not a big deal after 3 minutes.
[–]ruboski5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
You spend 40 minutes in your shower? Man, take a bath and save some water.
[–]1empatheticapathetic-2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Don't have a bath and I hate them anyway.
[–]Fredo1001 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
It takes 40 minutes for you to take a shower? You must be morbidly obese. Don't forget to wash inbetween the flabs.
Uh why else would I get in the shower?
[–]iamzeuss0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Before when I was taking cold showers I had no approach anxiety. After I stopped, it camr back.
Magic = cold showers.
To me cold showers are literally unbearable, like real torture or something. I cannot do it for more than 3 seconds
[–]HoeDaddy1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Go into a shower at regular tempurature and slowly turn it colder until u cant take it and stay there for a bit

"You see that sweet apple lying there? That sweet apple represent Blue Beta Billy. If you want to be real man, take that sour ass Granny Smith. You will feel resentment in your mouth. Your body is saying "NO, NO!" But you're a man, and you bite through the sour apple. As your mouth hurts, you start taking pleasure in this pain. You can feel yourself... becoming a man."
This is the type of cancer that needs to be banned on this sub.
[–]Glassland-1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah.. No. A sour apple and a sweet apple each contain essential vitamins, so you can eat the sweet apple as well.
Cold showers, however, offer benefits that hot showers cannot offer. That is why they are a recurrent theme here. It's an uncomfortable task, but if you master it, you can reap the benefits. That is what men do. They cut through the bullshit, they endure and they sacrifice to earn themselves something.
