It always helps me talk to girls when I have a "reason" to do so. Saying hi because she's pretty? Unacceptable. But saying hi because we both just got blood drawn and I can ask her about it? Totally legit. It's frustrating.

You still did good in talking to her. Just think about what you would have liked to say to her when she said goodbye for next time. The fact that she came back and said goodbye to you indicates how she thinks. It shows that she felt that you both were having a conversation and she wanted to properly end it. Maybe you could have asked her if she was doing anything and wanted to get a coffee since you are free for the next hour, or something like that.

I chatted briefly with a girl in a cafe, and then she went up to order and came back to resume the conversation with me and I thought that was pretty cool. It just shows that you have her attention for the moment, I've seen too many girls just kinda chat and act like they never talked to you when you see them later. So good going, just keep it in perspective as it's a good step in the right direction!

This was all great, but...just say “are you single?!” If she does not provide her number, just play it cool and then end on a positive “enjoy the rest of your day”. Too many missed opportunities because I was shy. :( That is why the expression “youth is wasted on the young” exists! When you are older you may have confidence in spades, but the opportunities and invitations may diminish. ;) Learn from this, move on, and better luck to you in the future!
