What exactly does a wingman do?

Help motivate each other to approach, introduce groups of women you meet to your wing, and support him when he needs help in conversation. Sometimes you will need to entertain other members of the group so he can get personal time with his girl. Also, keep each other's spirits up and have fun together -- that's most important.

Good wings will take turns so both parties experience success. You'll be the lead in one interaction and he'll lead the next.

I like Nick's list. The classic move, as Nick suggests, is the wing opening a set and then drawing you in. Your wing can give you a big buildup DHV intro that you can't pull off yourself without seeming arrogant. Also the wing opening the set takes a little hit of DLV, he approaches and makes the (possibly) awkward opening and then he opens the door for your smooth entrance.

Also watch each other's backs. If your wing is blowing it, deflect him. Some guys have a keyword to use, to warn the other he's fucking up and to stop and reconsider his approach. Sometimes the other guy sees something happening from outside your set that you can't see from the inside.

But probably the most important duty of a wing is to split up a set so you can isolate. Some girls will stick together and you can't isolate unless the other is distracted.

This is my territory! Sadly, I'm much better at the wingman thing than I am at the seduction thing. A wingman will have multiple roles in the course of a night:

motivator. Sometimes approaching girls can be intimidating even for the most confident lady's man. The wingman helps you think of strategy and get you in the right mindset.
accentuate your awesomeness. When you talk to girls, your objective isn't to talk about yourself... its to get her to talk about herself. Sometimes, though, its nice if you can give the girl some insight into your life without sounding like you are bragging about yourself. The wingman gets to tell her about that time you did something really awesome for him or when you did something kinda dumb yet endearing.
jump on grenades. Sometimes girls get jealous when they aren't the center of attention. The wingman prevents them from cockblocking you. Buy them drinks, tell them their hunchback is cute, whatever. Sometimes, the friends aren't that bad looking and a good friend will reverse rolls in a second if it looks like the wingman is close to sealing his own deal. This is kind of a double-edged sword and it depends on how committed you are. I had one friend bag a 300+lbs woman so his buddy could bang a 250lber. Another buddy's only chance of getting laid was when a girl said she would only have sex with so-and-so if the wingman was involved (sorry, but so-and-so was an ugly dude and the wingman was much better looking). Now, I'm not as committed as the first guy, but depending on the wingman, there's many opportunities here. And, to be honest, the these are the only two times I've heard of a wingman being required to have sex to help out his friend, so don't think its a common occurrence.

Well I think most of it has been said... But points to note, a wingman is to aid the interaction, if your buddy gets stuck for words you come up with something to talk about, you need to help him isolate his target by entertaining the rest of the group, if its a 2 set, and your wing can't seem to isolate his target, turn on the charm on the other chick and isolate her away.

Also, have behind the back signals, so your wing knows whether to come in or not. Also have an ejector word for when you want your wing to buzz off, to switch targets, etc. The rest has more or less been said but i think the most important role for wingmen is to push each other.

What doesn't the wingman do? You guys are out in the field together, pumping each other up. You guys are helping each other talk to ladies. You're there for each other if there's any sort of trouble. You watch out for each other. You increase each other's social value. You each add to the other by increasing your social circles and having the other join in. In a wingman you've got a drinking buddy, a friend, a guru, a bodyguard, a cheerleader and a teammate. Really the question is, what doesn't a wingman do.

Over at BAS we have a saying: Friends first, wingmen second. It's helped us to become one of the more active subs in the community. I'd recommend the same to everyone.

You're doing great work, great work.

Your friend now has a friend, you presumably are not going to hit on his ladies, if something gets hairy, you intervene, if there is interference, you interfere with the interference.

There are people here (over intellectualizing the situation, if you ask me) who have ultra particular wing formations and tactics, but basically you are there to keep your friend company and make each other look cooler than a creep standing there by himself checking out T&A.

The two most fundamental things a wing should do are:

Big each other up. It's much more effective if your wing says something positive about you then it is when you say it yourself. As a general rule of thumb, if I'm winging for someone I never just introduce him as his name. I introduce him as something interesting like, "This is my good friend Tod, he saved my life once from a drunken midget, so be nice"
Block. This is one most wingmen seem to understand but still seem to execute poorly. If there is an obstacle for your friend (IE - a fat chick who keep trying to steer things in a bad direction) it is every wings solemn duty to distract that she-beast long enough for his friend to make headway with the attractive one.
