Well, the ideal scenario would be to introduce yourself before it gets to this point. I'm assuming this is someone who (re)joined the group after you had worked your way in, so when they return to the group just say 'Hi, I'm x, what's your name?' Lovely to meet you, etc'.

If not, just introduce yourself as soon as they say 'Who is this guy?'. Same words, just better to do it earlier really.

I'd say something along the lines of "Haha, I never introduced myself! I'm Basquiat!" Than try to get everybody's name. But I could see how this could catch someone off guard.

You are reading too much into it. Just: 1) Introduce why you came over (not your name, but something going on) or 2) Reference something you were just talking about with chick and just keep going into the story with her.

You don't want to put on a 'show', just say 'hi' and move on. If everyone starts looking at you, just say something like "having a good time?" addressed to everyone. Easy peazy.

I agree with everone who said introduce yourself. You are being nice by introducing yourself and if he still responds negitivly then id just go to a friend "is he always like this" and whatever there response just say ok and continue on another subject. If you have the groups attention and the group likes you. If your nice then the one person will have to like you due to the social pressure of his group. If he doesn't he will just look bad in his group so its his problem

Frame it as genuine interest even if their tone is aggressive or dismissive. You can't show it bothers you. Just present yourself in a fun way that won't make you the group clown. Something like : "I'm the guy that's going to ask you two questions, #1 who are YOU #2 why are there no flying cars".

Usually when people ask who I am I just start improvising some story about my lost son in nepal and that time when I saved my grandmother from an arson and other random stuff. Then again I really don't have a problem telling spontaneous bullshit. I should do politics.

If you're standing next to a guy, clap your hand on his shoulder (don't let go quite yet,) point at him with your other hand, and say "His boyfriend!" with a shit-eating grin. It may take a moment, but most likely they're going to ROFL hard. After they get it, you can let go of his shoulder and join in the ROFL'ing. :)

Of course, you need to calibrate for the level of homophobia in your region of the world.

I always do the Joe Hallenbeck, from "The Last Boyscout" and announce to the person. "I'm nobody, shsssssh,... Don't tell anyone"
Do it in a toned down quiet, but yet confident way....While looking them straight in the eye. And you'll put them on the defensive rather than the offensive, which is the place that person needs to be. You're the boss. Control the situation. Don't be outdone by them.

LOL sometimes its because that guy is a fucking n00b. So last night I went to a scotch tasting with a couple of friends. One of the friends I don't know that well. Anyways this 9 approaches our group and asks how our nights going. After about 45 seconds I ask "so who do you know?" pointing to our group.

to her it must've sounded like it did to you. As if she was breaching our group and unwelcome. B/c she said oh i'm sorry didn't mean to bother ya'll thought you guys looked fun and proceeded to walk away.
what i actually meant. One of the guys was my best friends so I know everyone he knows. I knew i didn't know anyone that hot. So I figured the third guy in the group knew who she was. Basically I genuinely curious as to who the fuck this hottie was.

Walking away was good It changed the dynamic of the interaction. Originally she came to us therefor trying to win us over. By her walking off like that it made us chase her. Switching the dynamics so it was now us trying to win her over. ~clever gal
