I think you reacted perfectly. Making a joke out of it and being able to laugh at it shows that you don't care and are confident in the way that you look.

And besides, if you've found something that works for you, I don't think there's a problem in working with that. If somebody remarks that you always wear the same thing, you should just smirk and say something along the lines of "It's because I just look so damn good in this."

As for your clothes, Is it that you always wear the same clothes or always wear the same style? I'd say it's a good idea to have at least 3 different styles available to you. One casual, one smart casual, one smart. Bearing in mind you can wear smart casual to a casual type event and smart to a casual or smart casual type event.

Personally, I have my casual look which is boot cut jeans, a t-shirt, a hoody and some boots. These are all well fitted, not baggy at all, baggy is bad, even when casual. You only want to go baggy when you're super casual, i.e. lounging about the house.

I then have a smart casual look which is tan/black trousers, a t-shirt underneath a casual shirt, a casual blazer or a jacket. I'll usually wear these either with my black loafers or my dress shoes (generally loafers for tan trousers, dress shoes for black trousers.

Finally, smart is my black suit, white shirt, black tie with dress shoes. I don't wear this very often, as I'm a student, but when I do it looks damn good.

I'd say pick a set of clothes or two for each situation and mix and match (say go smart casual to a casual event, never go casual to a smart event though, for obvious reasons).

It doesn't matter. I like dressing simply and nothing too out of the top. That means a lot of basic, solid colors and whatnot. It's my style, I enjoy it, and inevitably I'll end up wearing a lot of similar outfits on consecutive days. No big deal.

Well it's one thing to have your own style but always wearing "brown/creme trousers" (I assume you mean khakis?) and a light colored T-shirt goes well beyond just a personal style.

I would add some dark wash jeans into the mix (every man needs a good pair of raw denim in my opinion). Also getting yourself some shirts for a look that is a little smarter would probably be a good idea (a blue and white oxford button down is a good start). Then depending on your age and the environment you live in you can add a nice casual blazer or a zip up hoody or something to layer with.

When you are thinking about personal style it should be more in the sense of how flamboyant you dress, the color palettes you use, if you edge more towards the formal side or casual side (for instance always dressing just slightly more formal than the occasion calls for), how "tight" or "loose" you dress and what sort of look you go for (preppy, streetstyle, etc.)

Saying you wear a light colored T-shirt and brown/creme trousers goes well beyond personal style.

If you want to post a picture of your outfit (with shoes and also one with the jacket you usually wear) I can give you some advice if you want. From your description we still don't know shit about the way you dress. It could be a walking fashion disaster or a very solid look depending on the fit, colors and the shoes you wear.

btw. Get over to /r/malefashionadvice asap. It's the best resource out there for going from a newbie to someone who knows his shit and has his own style.

I'm a bit confused by your question.

Do you just wear the same general look all the time, or are you literally wearing the same clothes. As in you have like 5 plain light-colored T-shirt and always wear it with the cream or brown trousers?

One of the things about fashion is it should be fun. The more you learn the better you get and the easier it is. If you focus on getting a versatile piece of clothing every few months, in just a couple years you have a full wardrobe in which you can make a whole combination of different/unique outfits using just a few core pieces.

Also, don't eschew black because you associate it with your old self. It is actually the most versatile color, though don't wear all black, as in black shirt, black pants, black shoes.

Style and color is easy to change for the seasons, which can make it a little weird if you have the same outfit all year round.

However, my final point is, if you are comfortable and confident in your new outfit then it shouldn't matter. They always say "if you look good you feel good", the opposite also applies. Still, try to open yourself up a little bit in terms of style, and always make sure the piece fits well. If it is a great piece but it doesn't fit you well, it is probably a better idea to not buy it, or know that you will have to pay more money to get it tailored.

Have you hit up MFA for ideas yet? All you really need to do is probably add one or two different colored pants and maybe add something more than just t-shirts to your repertoire. You definitely handled the situation correctly, but your friend may have a point. Style is really just about fit and color matching, and it goes a long way.

Do you go to different venues or situations with your regular group of friends? I mean, I see mine around our homes, out for an evening, lunch at work, at weddings and other semi-formal events, swimming, sports... there's a wide range of clothes worn at these things, even with the same consistent personal style.

I often get comments on the diversity of my styles, one day ill ware a flannel button down and skinny jeans, the next il ware a baggy as fuck hoody and sag my pants, then the next il ware something equally as different. Its all about what gives you the most confidence and what image you like to display. For me that changes on a daily basis, so my style does too.

I mean this in the nicest possible way, but it absolutely sounds like you DO wear the same clothes always, and instead of just taking the advice, you saw it as a blow to your ego, and tried to deflect it. I know this sounds harsh, but that's really what it looks like to me.

I would definitely look into diversifying your wardrobe. You shouldn't be able to boil it down into one simple formula. Being predictable is generally pretty bad in relationships/game, and I wouldn't say it works much better in fashion either.

A couple of years ago I found some business casual slacks that I fell in love with... and bought 10 pair. I've worn them almost exclusively since because they look great on me and are so damn comfortable. Nobody has called me out on it, though I have been called out for being overdressed on more than one occasion (I have half a dozen great comebacks at the ready). I mix it up with different shirts.

What's my point? That it doesn't matter. Wear what you like. If you're happy and comfortable in what you've got, stick with it. It's your style. One comment shouldn't have you questioning yourself like this. Live your life for you - you'll never please everybody, so don't waste another precious moment of what little time you have on this planet trying.

You can stick with a general look and feel, but you MAY (don't have to) vary individual items. Get a few shirts that are of similar fashion, but not exactly same. You can also change shoes and accessories.

Thats more like a pair of outfits than a look.

Personally, I pivot around my jeans. I can go with a nice American Apparel T-Shirt and Onitsuka's. I can then throw a striped oxford on top, and switch to topsiders for something slightly more formal, and then I throw a blue blazer and some loafers in winter, or topsiders in summer and i'm rather dressy.

You handled yourself well; I've heard those comments before, and I usually just say "Maybe you're going color blind," or something that'll get people to laugh in the same way.

It is good to have a wide array of options in your wardrobe, but honestly, you'll be the most confident when you're the most comfortable (I don't mean old jeans, and dirty t-shirt when I say comfortable, but having everything fit well).

I wear casual clothes during the evenings and business casual at work, but when I go out I have a particular get-up I like to wear. I usually with the a V-neck tee or a stylish sweater depending on the weather as well as some dark jeans and brown dress shoes. I like this style, but I can see how people would think I wear the same thing all the time, since the entire wardrobe usually has a darker tone.

I've found the best solution has been to experiment with different colors. For instance, I found a great vneck/sweater hybrid that fits very well and is a light grey/blue, and I've been told many times that the color brings out my eyes. I've also found some good dark maroon dress shirts for clubbing and usually reserve a zip up hoodie and chucks (or more "college" appropriate wear) for the bars/beerhouses.

Overall, yes, have a good selection. Don't feel you need to hit every style out there, or deviate much. In fact, the best way to expand your look without changing your style is to pick out different colors. Experiment, have fun, get some second opinions from female friends, and go out looking/feeling confident!

I like my look. It's a button down, jeans, and semi formal shoes, skate shoes, or "nice" sneaker type shoes (like what Aldo sells). All of the above are typically designer brands. "Fashionable" if you would.

My button downs are a variety of colors and designs, 90% of which are from Guess. My jeans vary in style and color, all from Express.

My look is solidly the same. But it's execution varies enough to not always leave me looking "the same."

Keep your new look. Just add variety within it, if you can and wish. Or just do what you want. It's your look. You decide how to wear it.
