My brothers ex wife got full custody of my brothers kids because she is the "mother and better at raising kids". 3 months later at 4.5 and 3 years old they were both wondering chucky cheeses alone. Cops called. Cops picked up the kids, hunted for the "fit mother". The cops found her at home with her boyfriend passed out and high on drugs. A clip in the paper about the incident and a police report later, bam. Brother has full custody. Mothers are always good.

[–]sugarfrostedfreak 68 points69 points70 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My father was granted full custody of my older sister after she was found covered in her own feces and being watched by a drugged out stranger. She was 1 1/2.

Her mom had decided that running off with some guy she'd just met for a week long bender was more important.

As my dad tells it he was the first father in Nevada history to be granted full custody of a female child.

[–]machingunwhhore 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Glad to hear your brother got full custody because I would not be surprised if they got split custody after that.

Sad but true on split custody

[–][deleted] 443 points444 points445 points 8 years ago (50 children) | Copy Link

Isn't the stat that 72% of children killed by a parent was the mother? Family court needs to be reevaluated.
Also, to think that she would rather kill her own child instead of giving up custody where she would still have access to him.

[–]HeForeverBleeds 249 points250 points251 points 8 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Also, to think that she would rather kill her own child instead of giving up custody where she would still have access to him.

That's because it's about control and power like with most predators, not because she actually wanted to spend more time with her son

[–]e_d_a_m 44 points45 points46 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

To be fair, it's because whenever you have a mother and father in a court, it is only because there is a struggle for control -- even if they both think that control is warranted (i.e., they think they're doing what is best for the kids).

So if follows that, in a contested situation, as the family court will always be, the court should have a duty not to tip the balance of power one way or the other.

Family court should default to 50/50, unless there is a demonstrable reason not to.

[+]SoraDevin -7 points-6 points-5 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I agree with the concept, although it's not exactly realistic

[–]e_d_a_m 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I would love to know why you think that? Are you saying it's not realistic that the law will even be enforced in such an unbiased manner? Or are you saying that a 50/50 default wouldn't work somehow?

[–]SoraDevin 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Ah, I meant that it seems to me moving a young child between two homes every 3-4 days (or every month or whatever the time split is) makes things like school difficult, particularly if the parents live far from one another. It's pretty dependant on each case though.

[–]e_d_a_m 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

Those are valid points. But weigh it up...

On the one hand, you might have slightly longer travelling time to school (assuming a parent isn't willing to move). And, more importantly, the disruption that it causes to a child to move between two homes. (My children are in this situation, so I can confirm that it isn't ideal.)

On the other, though, the child loses a parent! They lose one of the two closest, most important people in their lives, and all the wisdom, experience, love and, well, just time spent playing, learning from and aspiring to a mum or dad. And over their entire upbringing! The stories read at bedtime... The different meals... Activities... And the different values and understandings that both parents bring. And the two parents are (usually) different genders -- the child gets to see how grown ups of both gender get by in the world; how they handle hardship and how they go about getting what they need. This is all absolutely essential for healthy development!

I just don't see the comparison, to be honest. One the first hand, you have a less convenient childcare arrangement. On the other, you deprive the child of half of it's parenting...

[–]SoraDevin 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah I get what you mean, on analysis it's probably less of an inconvenience than I first thought, but I stand by the idea there will be some cases where that inconvenience will be more than a disproportionate split

[–]e_d_a_m 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, I actually agree with you, there will. Bit the big problem with those cases is that the court will be completely unable to detect them!

I've seen first hand how powerful narrative and bias are in the family court. You have to remember that those situations are never amicable (or there would be no case). And with a lack of consensus from the parents, the court can only rely on outside agencies (such as CAFCASS in the UK, who are appalling). In my case, a CAFCASS officer actively sought to misrepresent the facts to the court so as to advantage my children's mother, because (I presume) the officer had been taken in by her stories and (again, I presume) imagined herself to be helping the situation. She also sought to prevent me from entering evidence that challenged the narrative, and at one point sought to dissuade me from having legal representation in court on the grounds that her "presence would be sufficient"!

I realise that all this is anecdotal, but consider this: if an outside agency that functions as the eyes and ears of a court is so biased is so able to engineer the outcomes of the court (even in an open-and-shut case, like mine!), what chance is there that they can be trusted to make a call about whether the inconveniences of shared custody outweigh the potentially life-shattering loss of a parent (to the child, to the parent, to the grandparents, uncles and aunts, for the rest of all of their lives!). It seems to me that, unless a material, tangible, real reason can be shown as to why is shouldn't be, the position of 50/50 care can be the only reasonable default.

I believe this is what he was referring to.

https://www.mensrightshalifax.com/international/safer-with-their-fathers-children-2-4x-more-likely-to-be-killed-by-their-mothers-boys-murdered-more-often/

The DHHS data shows that of children abused by one parent between 2001 and 2006, 70.6% were abused by their mothers, whereas only 29.4% were abused by their fathers.

And of children who died at the hands of one parent between 2001 and 2006, 70.8% were killed by their mothers, whereas only 29.2% were killed by their fathers.

Furthermore, contrary to media portrayals that leave the viewer with the impression that only girls are ever harmed, boys constituted fully 60% of child fatalities. (Table 4-3, p. 71, Child Maltreatment 2006, http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/cb/pubs/cm06/cm06.pdf, reports that 675 boys died in 2006 as compared to 454 girls).

** More information about the bias in our divorce/family courts**

I don’t know exactly how bad things are in the UK or wherever this is from.... but here in the US, our family court system is pretty fucked up.

Multiple studies prove extreme bias in the divorce/family courts.

Relevant except...

*Another survey, this one commissioned by the Minnesota Supreme Court, found that a majority (56%) of the state’s judges, both male and female, agreed with the statement, “I believe young children belong with their mother.” Only a few of the judges indicated that they would need more information about the mother before they could answer. Fathers, one judge explained, “must prove their ability to parent while mothers are assumed to be able.”4 *Another judge commented, “I believe that God has given women a psychological makeup that is better tuned to caring for small children.”5

And this is exactly the problem.... Mothers are automatically assumed to be “good caregivers” while fathers must prove their ability to parent. This ignorant naive view of the world causes judges to give preferential treatment to mothers.... and it’s only when they are presented with multiple pieces of undeniable evidence, do they start to question whether the mother is unfit to parent. Hell, many times even when there’s a bunch of evidence (such as drug/substance abuse, mental illness, evidence of abuse/neglect) suggesting that the mother is unfit, the judges will still ignore it and not take that into consideration when deciding custody arrangements. In that study above, only a few of the judges stated that they would wait until they had more information about the mother before passing judgment on her parenting abilities.... everyone else just presumes she’s a “good parent”.

Meanwhile, any stain or mark on the father’s record is all it takes for them to justify denying him custody of his children. They don’t even need actual proof or evidence to strip away a man’s rights to his children..... Usually all it takes is one false allegation of abuse and they automatically grant the mother restraining orders and temporary custody. And even when the investigation comes back showing there’s no evidence to those claims, the father still has to fight an uphill battle in order to be in his children’s lives.

It’s like u/HeForeverBleeds said above...

So many lives have been ruined or, in this case, completely destroyed because of this ignorant assumption that mothers are always the better parents, or that they instinctively love and care for their children

——-

*Well, why can’t we reform our divorce/family courts already? Isn’t feminism supposed to be fighting against these kinds of gender roles/stereotypes? *

Actually, the biggest obstacle to custody reform has been the mainstream feminist movement. Powerful and influential feminist organizations such as NOW continuously lobby the government to oppose alimony/custody reform.

They don’t mind the gender stereotypes that benefit women.... they’re only concerned with the ones that harm women.

The Florida chapter of the NOW, successfully lobbied to have Governor Rick Scott veto not one, but two alimony reform bills in the last ten years, bills that had passed both houses with overwhelming bipartisan support, and were supported by more than 70% of the electorate.

The feminist group in Maryland who convinced every female member of the House on both sides of the aisle to walk off the floor when a shared parenting bill came up for a vote, meaning the quorum could not be met and the bill died then and there.

Feminists also pushed the Tender Years doctrine decades and decades ago as a way to combat the fact that fathers were the parent that used to get custody of his children before the alimony/child support laws were created.

For those who don't know what the tender years doctrine is, it's basically a legal principle that was first created and used in family law back in the 19th century that presumes that during a child's "tender" years (generally regarded as the age of four and under), the mother should have custody of the child.

These principles have been abolished in most places because of obvious flaws in the logic... such as the fact that instead of treating people as individuals, they base a persons parental abilities simply on their gender.

Unfortunately though... that doesn't stop these old judges from being stuck in 19th century mindsets that act like all women are wonderful amazing creatures that are far more nurturing than any man could be.

So instead of fighting for true equality, the early feminists just reversed the trend of fathers getting custody and turning it to the complete opposite extreme where mothers are the main ones to get custody. And even though all the studies show how damaging it is for these children to not have their fathers in their lives, they continue to fight against shared equal custody reform bills.... They aren’t concerned with the best interests of the child. They aren’t concerned with true gender equality... They are only concerned with women’s interests.

In the UK is it fucked.

I have majority care of my children now, thank god. But, three months after I left her, essentially taking the kids with me, my ex was able to almost completely cut me out of their lives for over 9 months while I fought her in court. She was after money and my house. In total, it cost me over £30k to stop her using them in an attempt to profit. The courts, police, social services, school, everyone supported her. She was even able to claim financial aid by pretending she'd been a victim of violence in the relationship (the fact that I had left her meant nothing).

There was a concerted effort in April 2014 to get law passed that would have made custody 50/50 by default in the family court in the UK. If it had succeeded, it would have taken away her incentive and power to abuse my children. The attempt was defeated by feminists.

Just think about that for a second: a Bill to default to 50/50 shared care was defeated by people who claim they want gender equality. Mind blowing...

Edit: typos.

False allegations of abuse during Divorce proceedings

Here’s a HuffPost article which states that 70% of all allegations of abuse in divorce/family courts are proven false.

70% of all allegations of abuse in divorce/custody battles are “unfounded” or “false”, after investigations. Gimme a min and I’ll try to find the source.

http://archive.is/6oEKl

While meant to act as a safety mechanism in cases where domestic violence is present, the ease of obtaining an order of protection and the instant benefits it provides the alleging party has created a system ripe for abuse. In fact, up to 70 percent of cases involving allegations of abuse during custody disputes are deemed unnecessary or false.

Clearly, protection orders that are meant to offer protection for those in serious situations are now being used as a weapon to turn the tide in divorce; a weapon that overwhelming targets men.

EDIT: You’ll notice I had to use an archived link instead of linking directly to the source... That’s because Huffington Post recently removed this article from their site.

The article is actually from back in 2015 so it stayed up longer than I would have imagined.. It seems like they only got rid of it in the last few months since this MeToo controversy has been going on. They probably removed it because they don’t want that information to be well known as it casts a lot of doubt on their “false accusations of rape are extremely rare- only 2%” narrative. I mean, think about it.... It’s very clear that a lot of women are willing to lie about their ex being abusive,... possibly ruining his life, getting him incarcerated, ruining his relationship with his kids, etc etc... all so they can give themselves an advantage in court.

So if that many women are willing to lie about something as serious as abuse/domestic violence.... what makes people think accusations of rape/sexual assault/harassment are any different?? ... They’re not!... they are just another form of lies that can be weaponized and used for their own self interests.

Women are human beings just like men.... and people lie all the fucking time, whenever it suits them. They will lie for an infinite number of reasons,...

But for some reason feminists and women’s advocates pretend that false accusation lies are somehow different... that because these allegations are so serious, women understand the consequences for lying about these things and they are less willing to do it. It’s total bullshit....

Women aren’t these altruistic, pure hearted creatures that would never harm another person.... They are every bit as capable of hurting, exploiting, abusing and taking advantage of other beings just like men are.

EDIT 2: Here’s another really good article talking about this same issue, I found while searching for a backup. It also cites the HuffPost article but it also contains a bunch of other sources as well.

Do you know if these statistics are probabilities of being harmed/killed by a parent of each gender, or per capita? That is to say, are more children killed by women just because women more often have custody of their children?

[–]contractor808 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Wouldn't that explanation suggest a person is more prone to harm/kill a child by just being in proximity? That's a very dim view of human morality.

[–]e_d_a_m 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not sure I understand...?

I wasn't taking any view on morality. I was just trying to determine whether more kids were killed by women was because more women had sole custody than men.

I.e., the statistics could be the result of either of these cases:

a) that, statistically, a child is more likely to be killed by a single parent if that parent is male, but that there are so few male single parents that it is mostly women that kill their children, or

b) that a child is more likely to be killed by a single parent if that parent is female.

That's not surprising, women are more likely to be the primary caregiver.

Well, in that case, maybe it’s time we actually tried to reform our family courts so that judges stop assuming the mother will be the “best fit for the child” and automatically giving her custody, it’s clear from all the data I’ve provided that mothers are just as likely, if not more likely, to abuse and neglect their children.

I think it’s time we let these old myths and gender stereotypes about moms being the “best parent” die and actually give men a chance to care for their children more than a couple weekends a month.

———

Here is a post of mine which contains multiple studies conducted by dozens of states in order to find out if there was any bias/prejudice in our family courts. In every state studied, the attorneys and judges themselves admitted there was bias against father’s. And as I said before, these studies were commissioned by the states and conducted by state organizations... so you can’t get more credible than this.

Multiple studies prove extreme bias in our divorce/family courts.

Relevant excerpt...

First: I didn't completely read your comment and probably agree with you, but let me point out an error in your argument:

[...] it’s clear from all the data I’ve provided that mothers are just as likely, if not more likely, to abuse and neglect their children.

The data you provided are statistics about the sex distribution of child abusers/murderers. It does not take into account sex distribution of child carers. Exaggerated example: Would 90% of those children have female primary care givers, the 70% stat would actually point to an underrepresentation of females in child abuse/murder. (Although it's more complicated than that, since care taking isn't binary and doesn't fit perfectly, since the underlying statistic for means of comparison needs to encode "male/female has a chance to abuse the child".) Without taking the initial distribution of the underlying population into account you cannot state whether a female or male caretaker is more or less risky to a child.

[–]DarthCerebroX 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

This data also doesn't mention parents' new boyfriends/girlfriends and their rates of abuse. I'd be curious to see that. I've seen a ton of stories where it's not the parent themselves that abuses the kid, but they let their romantic interest abuse them.

I’m glad you mentioned this... The statistics I provided are only comparing biological mothers and biological fathers . Feminist sources on the other hand usually include step fathers/moms boyfriends and there’s a reason for that.

When discussing custody reform, feminist groups like to make the claim that fathers are more likely to abuse their children... and they use this as a justification for their opposition to shared custody bills.

Obviously that claim doesn’t match up with all the statistics that I’ve provided. That’s because the feminist organizations use studies that were conducted by women’s advocacy groups and other feminist researchers. When these feminist groups compile the data for their statistics, they don’t just compare the biological parents because then it would show that mothers abuse their children at higher rates (and this obviously goes against their narratives). So when it comes to the “father” category, they also include step fathers, men the moms are dating/living with and anyone else who took on a “fatherly role”. Once they include those numbers, they get their desired results and the statistics say fathers abuse their children more often.

The problem is, many times they conveniently leave out this part, not telling people they also included non biological fathers... and they let people assume they are only talking about the biological parents.

And if that wasn’t bad enough... then they turn around and blame the men/fathers for abusing these children even though it’s the mothers who should carry a lot of the blame for allowing their children to be abused by their partners. This is especially common with single mothers (who many times have a revolving door of men coming through their homes). They irresponsibly bring these men (who they don’t know very well or don’t take the time to check out) around their children and those children (often times girls) end up getting molested or sexually abused. There’s even plenty of cases where the mothers actually enable the abuse by being in denial or turning a blind eye.

So these feminists groups use misleading statistics to make it seem like fathers are more abusive to their children.... then they use this to justify keeping biological dads away from their children, even though the children are more likely to be abused by the biological mothers or the men their moms are dating.

It is a tricky stat. It's 71% of kids killed by one parent are killed by moms, not all kids killed by pa FYI, 60% are boys.... http://www.breakingthescience.org/SimplifiedDataFromDHHS.php Sorry on a cell

Thanks. I read the stat somewhere, had that usual shocked moment and the number part stuck

[–]iddco 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, its a powerful number. Unfortunately, I have found that if we don't state the stats exactly how they are listed then people discount everything we say. I don't know how big a difference there is between the amount of kids killed by both parents or strangers vs those killed by one parent is but I have learned to try not to give them anything to discount the information.

[–]Larry-Man 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I mean but if women get sole custody that just makes sense that they’d see higher numbers.

[–]iddco 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

True but I thought woman don't do those things only men abuse. Also makes you wonder why the courts have not adjusted their default if it really is about keeping children safe. Not that a default either way should be used but a individual approach appears to be blasphemous. After all, why would it really be about the children.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, but the stat is also about women so nobody will believe it. Women always good, men always bad in the eyes of society. That's why we always call on men to clean up the mess when shit hits the fan.

It's also about what everyone around her would know, that she is such a bad mother that the father is a better option. Better to kill the kid than that! Sick.

Family court needs to be reevaluated.

That'll be a cold day in hell (hopefully not)

[–]cant_fix_crazy 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You also have to keep in mind that any stats are going to be skewed because primary custody is so disgustingly skewed towards mothers. You could argue that of course mothers are more likely to be the one to kill the kid because the mothers have them like 90% of the time...

I would like a source on that if you don't mind. After a few minutes of me looking, I found it was mostly fathers on multiple sources. I would love to share that info if you're right. I did find that sons were killed a majority of the time, but not by a large margin. Thank you.

[–]DarthCerebroX 15 points16 points17 points 8 years ago* (8 children) | Copy Link

After a bit of research, it greatly determines which gender is responsible for more deaths of more children depending on what age group of children you select. Infants killed within 24 hours of birth are more often killed by the mother. Source After that, fathers are slightly more likely to kill their children. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control's latest available data from 2007 show that U.S. infant mortality is 21% higher in male infants than female.

I suspect the OP may have been thinking of child fatalities due to abuse or neglect. Mothers are indeed more likely to be the cause of a child fatality due to abuse or neglect. Child fatalities due to abuse and neglect are 59.1% male in the US. 78.3% are attributed to parents. Of this 78.3%, 15.3% are attributed to the father, 26.4% are attributed to the mother, 22% are attributed to both, 1.7% are attributed to father and other, and 13% are attributed to mother and other. 13.4% of fatalities are attributed to nonparents and 8.3% are attributed to others. Source: p59 Exhibit 4-E

I don't really know how the methodologies of each dataset were collected and how much they overlap. I assume the Bureau of Justice statistics are based on homicide convictions. The data I posted is compiled from Child Protective Service records. These deaths are not necessarily legally considered homicides.

I wonder if the discrepancy between these statistics might be due to bias in the legal system against men leading to harsher sentencing.

EDIT: More info

Child murdered by mothers: Patterns and prevention https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2174580/

Most child abuse is neglect, and a majority of neglectful abuse happens at the hands of mothers https://www.reddit.com/r/mensrightslinks/comments/302cg5/dvipvgovernment_child_maltreatment_2013_us_dept/?st=JF9YFC4K&sh=b65f2ebd

https://www.mensrightshalifax.com/international/safer-with-their-fathers-children-2-4x-more-likely-to-be-killed-by-their-mothers-boys-murdered-more-often/

71, Child Maltreatment 2006, http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/cb/pubs/cm06/cm06.pdf, reports that 675 boys died in 2006 as compared to 454 girls).

it's the same reason that I think using the statistic that more men are in jail to say they must therefore be more violent is questionable. As a society we expect men to be violent and then punish them for it. Also as a society we expect women to be the primary caregiver so when a child dies of abuse or neglect the instinct would be to blame the mother.

Like I say, it's just a thought. I just think we should try to be better than what feminism has become and try to create a truly equal society which means being open to seeing biases against women as well as men. A bias against men will ultimately end up hurting women and visa versa, I think it's strange how many people think that one of the sexes can "win". Ultimately both sexes will be harmed by inequality and discrimination

edit: also I will check out your info because this is an interesting and important topic

I disagree. Today, society prefers blaming extenuating circumstances, mental illness or other "Outside" forces (primarily male) for the mother's abuse and neglect. You don't see that level of sympathy and pity donated to abusive fathers, do you?

——-

EDIT; False allegations of abuse during Divorce proceedings

[–]DarthCerebroX 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

No dude, that’s revisionist history... That’s the sugar coated, watered down version history of Feminism we are taught in school.

For one, early feminists are the ones that pushed the tender years doctrine which states that children should be with their mothers during their early years (0-5yrs).

Also, here’s some real history regarding first wavers...

—-

First wave feminism

1st wave feminists:

1) Won the right for married women to own their own property and income, and hold it separate from their husband's control. Maintained the legal entitlement of married women to be supported financially by their husband. (Otherwise known as, "what's mine is mine and what's yours is ours.) Her entitlement to his support even extended to the tax burden on her property and income--property and income he was legally prohibited from touching.

So basically, instead of demanding equal rights as administrators of the marital income and property, they demanded the rights of unmarried persons without the responsibilities, and the rights of married women without accompanying responsibilities. Men were still held to their responsibility as sole provider for the family, including the wife, but now had to do it without access to their wives' incomes and property.

There were men sent to prison in the UK for tax evasion for being unable to pay the taxes owing on the property/income of their wealthier wives. One suffragette, Dr. Elizabeth Wilks even refused (as was her right under the law) to provide her husband with the necessary documentation so he could calculate the taxes, and given that he was a schoolteacher and responsible for paying for everything else, he couldn't have afforded to pay it regardless. While he was in prison, she urged other suffragettes to do what she had. He was released from prison on humanitarian grounds due to his failing health, and died a few months later.

2) Won default mother custody of young children upon divorce or separation. Previously, the assumption was of paternal custody since the father was solely burdened with financial responsibility for their care.

Of course, it was only custody that was changed--financial responsibility still fell 100% to the father to maintain the household of his minor children. Since his ex was head of that household, he was now forced to continue supporting her even if she was at fault for the breakdown of the marriage.

So again, we went from the man having superior rights and greater responsibility, to the man having inferior rights and still having greater responsibility.

Hilariously, in 1910, after these two legal innovations had been in effect in NY State for close to 40 years, a suffragette lawyer (yes, before women were allowed to get an education and all...) wrote in the Times that the law still discriminated against women on the matter of children. How did the law do so? The only area of the law at that time that did not consider mothers at least equal custodians and guardians were the provisions granting the father control over the minor children's income and property. Basically, the law saw him as 100% responsible for feeding, clothing and sheltering the children, therefore it gave him 100% of the right to manage their money for that end.

A woman could, at that time, go to court and demonstrate that her husband had legally abandoned his financial responsibility to her and the kids, and there were provisions for transferring said rights to manage the children's income/property to her in such cases (and in the worst cases the man could end up in prison for refusing to support his family to the best of his ability). But this suffragette wanted the laws themselves changed such that wives (who bore no legal financial responsibility toward their children, or even themselves) have equal control over the children's income and property.

These changes were all in place decades before women got the vote. And speaking of the vote...

3) In 1917 a group of anarchists in the US filed a federal case against military conscription, describing it as involuntary servitude and therefore unconstitutional. SCOTUS was unequivocal in its rejection of their argument, asserting that the draft was a reciprocal obligation owed by all citizens to the state in return for the rights conferred by the state upon citizens.

Among other legal obligations men owed to the state: hue and cry laws, bucket brigades, the special constabulary (being drafted into the police force in emergency situations), etc.

Some suffragettes (like Sylvia Pankhurst, who abandoned the suffragette movement over it) were opposed to the draft, but other more active (and now more famous) ones campaigned in favor of the draft and participated in campaigns designed to use public shaming to pressure men to enlist. One of their posters even decried the fact that a woman was denied the franchise no matter how great she was (she could be a doctor or a lawyer or a mother, or a mayor), while even men unfit for military service did not lose their right to vote.

Two years after SCOTUS formalized the draft as being part of the price all citizens must pay for their rights as citizens, women got the vote. And no obligation to the state was ever placed on them in return for this right.

And before anyone here says, "but women weren't ALLOWED to be soldiers!", there are other ways to serve your country during wartime, and mandatory "war work" (like sewing uniforms or assembling munitions) could have been made a thing in a female draft. Anyone arguing that if women were included in the draft today "we'd be sending tiny, vulnerable women into foxholes" is ignoring the fact that there is TONS of necessary work in and alongside the military that doesn't involve active combat or serious physical risk, so that argument basically boils down to "how dare we inconvenience women!"

So. Three examples of first wave feminists demanding and getting men's rights without men's responsibilities. Two of them actively involve zero sum situations such as income and property rights, or custody rights to children, and in both cases feminists managed to arrange things such that women got all the rights while men were still burdened with all the responsibility.

Wow. Great morning read.

[–]DarthCerebroX 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

:)

Don’t get me wrong, the suffragettes and those early feminists did have a good cause. There was very real discrimination/oppression/(whatever you want to call it) that women faced back then. Both men and women were forced into those strict gender roles and each gender had its perks and disadvantages... but women decided that wasn’t right. They wanted the freedom to chose how they lived their lives and they wanted to be welcomed into society in roles other than wife/mother. And they absolutely deserved that!

The problem is just that whenever it came time to fight for their goals... you can see that they weren’t actually fighting for true gender equality. They were fighting to give women all the rights and privileges as men but without any of the responsibilities or hardships. They still wanted to keep all the perks and benefits that came with being a woman.

And the more you research feminism, the more you realize this is a trend that has carried on throughout every wave of feminism.

[–]MeEvilBob 17 points18 points19 points 8 years ago (59 children) | Copy Link

True, but there's a lot more radfem liberals than conservatives.

[–]numb3red -3 points-2 points-1 points 8 years ago* (58 children) | Copy Link

Sure, but 100% of neo-nazis are conservatives. No point in boiling a party down to the radicals.

EDIT: Downvoting a fact? Need a safe space guys?

[–]MeEvilBob 15 points16 points17 points 8 years ago (53 children) | Copy Link

When you hear the liberal extremist viewpoints, they don't really sound all that different than the conservative extremist ones.

[–]tmone 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (52 children) | Copy Link

They sound incredibly different. Clarify your point.

[–]MeEvilBob 16 points17 points18 points 8 years ago (28 children) | Copy Link

Extremism is just extremism, it doesn't really matter the actual cause. The more extreme someone gets in their viewpoints, the less it becomes about the actual cause they claim to be fighting for.

Liberal extremists who think that diversity should never include white men isn't really all that different than white supremacist conservative extremists.

[+]tmone -6 points-5 points-4 points 8 years ago (27 children) | Copy Link

Unless you're talking about how he far right wants to shut down free speech and advocate for other authoritarian policies, the horse shoe theory really isn't applicable here and now.

[–]MeEvilBob 17 points18 points19 points 8 years ago (25 children) | Copy Link

I gave just one of any number of examples, but yea, when the far right wants to shut down free speech, is that really any different than liberals pulling the fire alarm or blocking the auditorium entrance to prevent a speaker they disagree with from being able to share their viewpoints?

[–]Dancing_Anatolia 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Often times, the more opposite two groups seem to be on paper, the more similar they are in practice. For instance, did you know that Black nationalists and White nationalists oftentimes agree, and occasionally even ally with each other? They both want complete separation of the races, so despite being 'enemies' they actually work towards exactly the same goal.

Sometimes you have to look past what people tell you they are, and look for their true motives.

[–]exzeroex 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (22 children) | Copy Link

Extreme A. We need segregation because fuck B.

Extreme B. We need segregation because fuck A.

[–]tmone 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (21 children) | Copy Link

Is the right calling for segregation right now?

[–]exzeroex 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link

Racial, there's probably some ancient extremist still calling for it. Religious, I'd lean toward yes.

[–]Kildigs 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Totalitarian, big-government, national socialists are not conservative. The Nazi government dictated the way industry was ran and operated, with extreme regulation. Not small goverment free-market capitalism in any way. Neo-Nazis are the same way, attempting to dictate how everything from businesses to households to borders are managed in a draconian way. Alt-right may be what you mean, but even that is a broad term. A lot of alt-righters aren't conservative.

[–]j-dawg-94 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree with u man, I also think waiting on conservatives changing their minds on enforcing parental values to women and working values to men as an ideology might take longer to change than liberal's but that's just my two cents.

[–]tmone -2 points-1 points0 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well if the right has to own the alt right, the left better own the alt left and other radical lefties.

[–]numb3red 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No point in boiling a party down to the radicals.

You completely missed my point.

[–]j-dawg-94 -2 points-1 points0 points 8 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Why do you have to attribute everything to feminism man. That's not what this is about at all. This is the prime men's rights issue, the one I follow this sub for anyway. The woman wasn't a feminist, she had a "'longstanding and chronic' history of mental ill health." And therefore was an unfit mother and should have been a no brainer to give custody to the dad and yet it wasn't. The issue was father's need to have equal consideration as parents in custody battles.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points15 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Feminism is responsible for the biased family courts, thus feminism literally had a hand in this kids death. If that bothers you, you should probably look at why you are on a men's rights sub defending feminism.

[–]openup91011 -3 points-2 points-1 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Is it solely responsible though? I feel like “mothers are better at parenting” is considered an old idea from “The Patriarchy” to “keep women in the kitchen?”

I actually agree with your general point, This question just popped into my head.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The idea that "Early childcare is primarily a woman's role," is the result of millions of years of biology and primate evolution. (Patriarchy is not a thing. It is a made up buzzword with no meaning).

However, the idea that we should have a massive, government-run family court system thats primary task is to demonize men and enshrine female primacy in the family against all common sense, is a direct result of the feminists who have infiltrated the highest levels of the state with an insane ideology, and the beta males who let them do so.

Hope that clears things up.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The woman wasn't a feminist, she had a "'longstanding and chronic' history of mental ill health."

It was due to feminist reforms like "The Tender Years Doctrine" that got the ball rolling for mothers like her to automatically be granted support from family court.

Shared parenting would've solved this but did you see any feminist organizations supporting it?

No. N.O.W came out against it assuming abusive fathers would have easier access to their children. The purpose of the bill flying right over their heads.

[–]88stickup 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Why do you have to attribute everything to feminism man

Because feminists are the sole impediment to equal parenting rights. Eg in the US, NOW has successfully blocked dozens of shared parenting bills. The more you learn...

[–]scyth3s 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She may not have personally been a feminist, but feminism why definitely why she got custody.

[–]otra_gringa -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This shouldn't be a 'men's rights' issue as much as a children's rights issue. The reason the kid should have been with dad isn't because of any 'rights' the father deserves, but about the kid deserving the parent who can best care for him.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Very sad, there’s a major need for equal parenting rights in all custody battles. That should be the default not the exception.

In cases where the father is obviously the safest choice, there should be no hesitation to give him full custody and make her pay support; however, it has been done the opposite for so long it’s entrenched as normal. This must change.

Fathers have as much or more to contribute to the raising of children as any women does. Another prime example of reverse discrimination at its finest.

[–]M8753 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Also, "I know now you will be safe from harm and filled with only love and joy in heaven.", like I needed more reason to dislike religion.

And they knew she had mental issues previously.

[–]jaheiner 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

As a new father this breaks my heart...I can't even begin to imagine what this man is goign through. That the system failed him and that child so incredibly is an absolute shame when all that would have been needed to save this kids life was for them to actually be impartial.

That sad thing is that there is probably more work than there are people to do it in terms of CPS, however, if mommy had voiced concerns about safety of the children it would likely have actually been addressed.

[–]sherlockMeUp 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Based on the top post that looks like a really shitty sub

[–]Xorism 12 points13 points14 points 8 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

All subs can have shitty posts but the concept (imo) is about men putting themselves first instead of devoting their lives to a partner. The demographic of the sub tends to be men who've had bad experiences with a former partner or men who've heard of bad experiences through the internet or friends which have jaded them.

For example if you read online stories of men going from somewhat successful relationships and accomplished lives, to living destitute because the marriage broke up and the wife and kids have the family car + house whilst you ended up broke and in debt trying to pay child support, you might get jaded.

My limited understanding of mgtow is that what it means for you is determined by yourself, it can mean the simple exclusion of women from your life to some extent or simply a desire to avoid long-term serious relationships.

[–]wardrich -2 points-1 points0 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

All subs can have shitty posts, but when the shitty posts are literally the top all-time posts, it doesn't look so good.

When /r/incels died, they made /r/braincels (which really should be lackOFbraincels)... but maybe some of them branched off to the MGTOW sub? Who knows

slut shaming

Promiscuous women are both unhappier and less likely to pair-bond than non-promiscuous women, whereas the same is not true for men. So I'm not sure slut-shaming is always a bad thing. In any case studies show that it is primarily women who engage in this activity.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

A) Plse provide a citation or evidence

B) Even if true, could that possibly be because they’re slut shamed?? Like being called a slut might make them unhappy....possibly

C) So what? That’s no reason for men to join in

D) How is this related to men’s rights? We don’t lift men up by putting women down.

[–]88stickup 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Hey, don't blame me. If you want to harm women and make them unhappy then keep on encouraging slutty behavior.

[–]scyth3s 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The concept is somewhat reasonable, the sub... Is not.

[–]Brokenduckling 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 8 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

Yeah it does. Since when did mens rights become about shitting on women FFS. Honestly this does more harm than good.

[–]DrSpacemanSpliff -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, I guess “going their own way” means still obsessing over women. Like how childfree subs are still obsessed with parents and children.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Dial that back a bit. Childfree subs aren't obsessed with parents and children. It's that we're bombarded by them and we're sick of it. Just like "mothers are always good care givers" comes across as "humans always have to have babies."

[+]DrSpacemanSpliff -7 points-6 points-5 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

But the topic of conversation doesn’t really vary. Admittedly, that’s only from my limited exposure. Because I don’t plan to have kids, but I certainly will not be devoting my time to even thinking about kids let alone discussing the not-children in my life.

This really shows that you shouldn't settle when it comes to women. You really need to think about their mental state and how they will be as a mother, not just that you yourself can put up with them.

Mental health issues aren't worth the risk. Check carefully before committing. Like they say about buying a dog, check that she comes from a good family and see them together.

[–]5th_Law_of_Robotics 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Tender Years doctrine still in full effect.

When feminists pair up with traditionalists men suffer. Sometimes die.

[–]Ted8367 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

A father whose ex-partner was today jailed for 18 years for murdering their son during a custody battle has claimed the authorities dismissed his concerns and missed opportunities to prevent the killing.

The "authorities" have the primary responsibility in this murder. They initiated the process which placed the child in the physical control of the mother while simultaneously excluding the child from the father's protection. The mother's responsibility is secondary; it came afterwards.

Yet the "authorities" are not held to account; they never are. So this sort of situation will repeat in the future. This is where blind female preference and male blaming gets you.

[–]Random_Teen_ 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don’t usually comment on posts but this got me fucking enraged . People with their everyday stereotypes caused the death of the boy , and why is this not on mainstream media?
