Technically, yes, only the person cheating at fault - but assuming you knew the person has a partner, while you don’t deserve any blame per say, you still have a faulty moral code and have shown yourself to not be trustworthy. In other words, you’re still a person better off to be avoided cause you’ve proven yourself to be a backstabber

The problem with "stealing" somebody's SO is that now you have an SO who has a history of infidelity. Is that really what's best for you? I don't think it is. You're better off with somebody who isn't a cheater.

Respect a man or a woman's wedding ring. The same way you'd want someone to respect yours, or your son's. The divorce rate is already too high, we don't need to make it worse.

This post might be outrage bait or not. I wouldn't be surprised if this is how many people feel. I've had guys encourage me to ask out women I knew were taken, which kind of says everything I need to know about how the world works.

Kind of. It depends on the "contract" you guys have. If the new rule is that there are never any contracts, which is the direction we seem to be going in, then everyone will constantly be looking for other partners. Most energy will be spent on cosmetic surgeries, crime by people trying to get ahead, and more zero-sum competition instead of things that improve the quality of life for people. People will have fewer children, people will trust each other less, children will have broken families, children will do worse, and there will be more crime.

Society will become unstable for decades until one group of people drives themselves to extinction while other religious groups, with their private norms for these contracts, take over. However, I agree that if no valid contracts prevail, you can't blame people for doing what's rational in this scenario—not only for others but also for yourself. It's people believing this is socially a good idea that's impressive. They believe in whatever is convenient because they become hedonistic. But that's how all empires fall anyway.

Past behavior is the best predictor of future action, I think it's fine to have some fun with taken people but I wouldn't commit to them since if they're willing to cheat on someone else, they're most likely also willing to cheat on you

This is all a part of the pedestalization of sex in which sex is seen as some litmus test of "purity" (whatever that means). I imagine it's a holdover from religious indoctrination, social pressure and neanderthal brain wiring. I've had flings of various lengths with a few married/partnered women over the years. All but one had one foot out the door already (and ultimately divorced). I'm certainly not going to encourage a girlfriend to sleep with other guys but, really, the more important issues to me are: no babies or diseases. Sex to me... it's just an enjoyable activity for consenting adults. People are gonna do what they're gonna do. If s/he's inclined to do so and isn't cheating with you, it'll be with someone else.

That doesn't have to be a "crack". It could be a moment of weakness, of tiredness, of frustration.

A well functioning couple with kids: difficulties at work, a health issue, kids being kids. Even the best functioning humans might gain weight, get nervous, feel frustrated.

And while doing everything needed for the family, temporarily not being able to also be the most splendid self for the partner.

In that moment, a younger, carefree (and careless) person takes advantage of that weakness, and someone in the couple lowers the guard, only to regret that to death afterwards.

Yes, the other person might not be a "home wrecker", and the cheater is responsible of their own actions, full stop.

But to take advantage of a moment of weakness just to empty one's balls or satisfying one's tingles is an asshole move.

I prefer not to be the one to introduce someone to my friends who ends up assisting to break up a friend's relationship so I generally don't go offering social opportunities to meet my social circle to someone who expresses your point of view. This is very much a practical judgement on my part not an ethical one. I just don't want to get coated in mud when the shit hits the fan.

I do have ethical opinions and concerns about cheating too...but I hope you understand that the practical concerns are far more pressing. As you say... people have a duty to themselves to be rational actors. It's rational not to bring someone like you into my social circle.

I will say, one of the number one factors I see across the board with divorces and break ups anecdotally are the friends of the wife/gf being awful influences.
