What explains the recent decline of male sexlessness and rise in female sexlessness? Is it due to the destruction of the service industry where women are overwhelmingly represented?

Given how all OLD services suffer from a lack of women, women would find partners or hook up through reallife more often than men. Covid barred them from doing that for now.

If the ratio between man and women does not drift towards pre-covid levels after the pandemic, this theory would probably be debunked.

video games and online culture. People spend way more time online than outside mingling.

In the past it was mostly male focused, so there was an imbalance. Now women are getting into video games and online stuff too, so it's normalising and evening out and it looks like male sexlessness is declining and female sexlessness is rising, when actually it's just returning to 50/50.

We can speculate as for possible reasons if this is accurate.

But let's remember how social science works, and does not work. After many studies over many years indicating a rise in male sexless, people are still justifiably skeptical because 'social science'.

So I'm not sure why one or two studies, during Covid, suddenly have people thinking a trend that many were skeptical of in the first place (a rise in male sexlessness) is suddenly being reversed in a fundamental way.

The rise in female sexlessness isn't too hard to believe especially with lockdowns, what seems odd is the simultaneous decrease in male sexlessness.

I would have expected male sexlessness to increase in proportion to female sexlessness as women are generally the bottleneck/limiting factor in how much sex is being had.

I think it's because of OLD. more men than women use OLD. So lots of women would have been having sex by meeting people in person.

So those women would be hugely affected by the pandemic.

Conversely the pandemic has also made people want to be together and touch and we'll have sex. Which means the women who are on OLD and willing to have sex during a pandemic are probably having more sex to compensate for the lack of socialising and physical get together. And therefore increasing the sex that men have on OLD specifically.

It doesn't look like a significant effect, but it's too hard to tell just from the graphs you linked to. It could just be random up and down movement. The effect sizes do not seem very large. Probably, you don't hear about it because there isn't enough evidence to believe it's a real trend.
The decrease in male sexlessness is very small, like going back to 2015 levels.
Seems like the pandemic could be driving the increase in female sexlessness. It's cross-section data from surveys at different times. Looks like they did one survey in 2018 and another in 2021. It's GSS, you could try to look it up. Anyway, that would explain the straight line increase.
2018 vs. 2021? It's the pandemic. In the Before Times, she used to hook up with guys from Tinder whenever she felt like getting laid. She's worried about getting COVID-19, so she hooks up less often / less likely to do it.

The discussions I've seen and things I've exoerienced make it pretty obvious: pre covid the status quo favored women and when that got disrupted things didn't tilt into their favor since tje environments women favor got hit harder than men, since those spaces tend to fit more people like Yoga classes compared to Freeweights at a local gym for example, to say nothing of clubs or other organizations. Likewise after a while in isolation a lot of peoples standards went down, and dudes stopped having to compete with everyone else in the world and instead just had to compete with whoever was around locally again since meeting strangers constantly is a good way to catch covid.

The default dating strategy for a lot of women, which is taken to an extreme by places like FDS, assumes that times are good, large social environments full of interested men are freely available to them, and that the average man is willing to put out a disproportionate amount of legwork to make something happen. Covid-19 changed that because suddenly those environments don't exist, and the dudes they were chasing either settled down in the pandemic with someone else or aren't as open to the dynamic as they were previously. Or, on the flip side, a lot of women who were enjoying the openness suddenly wanted comfort and security rather than sex.

Speaking from experience the whole first year or covid was women who used to never give me the time of day suddenly wanting me around again, or else being way more forward. The dynamic clearly changed from them thinking they could do better to realizing I was their best realistic option at the time.

I have noticed that my female friends that were permanently bachelor status have taken up boyfriends during COVID.

And if that's the reason (which I don't know offcourse), then that would suggest that 80/20 is only true for casual sex. And I don't think that women as a group disagree with wanting a hot guy and looks matter if it's about causal sex. And that when you take casual sex out of the equation, women have a more equal distribution of partners, which would rise the amount of men having sex.

They've also all dumped their boyfriends the moment COVID was in decline offcourse and went back to bachelor status.

What these surveys tell us is the proportion of people surveyed who SAY they did not have sex in a particular year.

They do NOT tell us what proportion of people did not have sex in a particular year.

There is potentially a huge difference.

Seriously you can't analyze such a graph by assuming the values given are the truth. Usually you calculate error margins. With such a plot, they may be between 1 and 10% so analyzing a decline of 3 percent between 2 points is nonsense. But the overall increase for both sex seems consistent.
