I posted something similar in a general relationship advice sub so I could hear from some men, however I respect the opinions of the ladies in this sub so I feel the need to bring it here.

My boyfriend used to be my perfect man: sensitive, romantic, chivalrous, conservative, traditional, athletic, healthy, gorgeous. I could comfortably be the woman I’ve always wanted to be. I was blissfully happy. Thinking about it makes me emotional.

Flash forward, we’re 22 and 23, dating for 3.5 years. He had a back injury and started a new job in the middle of quarantine last year. I am so proud of him for his work and I’m grateful for his ambition in that sense. But he has abandoned his previous motivations. He gained a ton of weight, he neglects his health, he doesn’t exercise despite his improved back, he is always exhausted and spacey, and rarely engages in conversation anymore. He is a completely different man and I am losing attraction, getting frustrated, and I’m not the partner I want to be.

I have tried to open up a dialogue about these things, asking as a woman what is wrong, what I can do, and also what I need in this relationship (what I HAD). He has gone back and forth, first saying things will change, then saying they won’t change and I need to get over it, then saying he’s depressed, then saying he’s fine.

I do not see things improving, which is completely contradictory to the fact that I don’t want to give up when only a year ago we were amazing.

Am I asking for too much? Should I just be happy that I have a man who wants to provide for me, and not be so particular about how healthy or attractive he is?
