I'm so glad SFU has all of these women with so much experience in masculinity and being men. Otherwise there would be no one to tell men what forms of masculinity are acceptable for a men's group or a men's space. Or a man in general.

God forbid men decide for themselves.

I'm so thankful these oppressed women, who are the only ones who know what it's like to be cat called, followed, beaten, raped, sexually assaulted, and victimized, are there to tell all of those privileged men what they can and can't do.

I can really see how fearful and uncomfortable these women are of men, that's why they had to write the lines the privileged men in the video that they are afraid of were reading from behind the camera.

Also, the concerns over it becoming heteronormative seem completely based on nothing but speculation(i.e. "there's no rule outlawing it, so it's going to happen), while applying that same standard of stupidity to other advocacy groups wouldn't fly.

Also, I find most use of the word hegemony in contemporary contexts hilariously ironic considering it's based on implied power, and the current social/political landscape.

This whole video apparently is "what about the women!?", but in a sneaky way by saying "look at all the men!"

Personnally I agree that it is a waste of money, in the same way I believe that womens centres are a waste of money. Last year a girl running for welfare officer at my friends college tried to set up a womens safe space, the idea was rejected by most of the student body, women included, as being a waste of money and time on a service that was unnessecary. Best part was she was going to allow gay men in, but not straight men, so people started asking her would they be banning gay women too and how she was going to determine who could enter the space and whether she thought the space was inherintly disciminatory and thus a welfare officer, someone who whould strive to be rid of discrimination, should not engage in excluding the student body from a space on gender and sexuality grounds.

These are people who do not care about men. Their minds have been so muddled by feminist rhetoric that it is unfathomable to them that men would ever need any kind of help or camaraderie, despite the fact that one of the goals of the men's centre is suicide prevention. Men are not welcome in university unless they toe the feminist line. And if you don't, you might as well be dead.

I'm shocked. This video is disgusting. One thing I don't understand, why is there an argument about proclaiming a purpose before the center's creation?. Why is either side arguing about this? To the university it should be obvious the space is meant to advocate for men's rights and give support to men about men's issues (sexual discrimination, family law, accusations of sexual assault). To those requesting a men's space, it should be easy enough to proclaim a purpose if asked by the university. Hell I think I could do it in a few hours.

Anyways, I think most of the people raise ridiculous arguments. The one comment that annoyed me most was this "does not take into account marginalized or subordinate men" - This person has absolutely no right to make this comment. Along with the other sound bytes it assumes in the most offensive way possible that a men's center will be nothing more than a frat house where men come to "bro out".

I don't really want to get into whether this "men's center" is a good idea or not, because frankly I know nothing about the proposal, and the fact that a project has "men" in the name does not automatically make it good any more than the word "women" automatically makes it bad.

That said, this was just a really bad video. Like I said, I don't know anything about the project; and after watching this video I still know very little. What are the concerns these people have with the proposal? It seems that they feel it might be overly exclusive, too expensive, or just plain unnecessary - but they never really come out and clearly state any of those claims.

I almost want to thank the guy in the middle who said that the center would just be occupied by "douchebags playing video games" - because while I think he's probably wrong, at least he had the courtesy to state his viewpoint clearly and concisely.

Their argument is basically that men wouldn't be able to set up a safe space because they're men. The attitude is that we need feminists to run it for us. Yea, because heteronormativity and transphobia are just innate in every man, and it's not like these have ever been problems in women's spaces. After I saw this video I went and briefly checked my school's gender specific facilities and services. First thing to note is that apparently there is auto-fill when you enter "women's " and you get a number of options. If you enter "men's " no auto-fill occurs. The actual searches for X gender "care" result in very different things. There are no facilities for men specifically, whereas there are at least two noted for women. One for bodily issues and one for support groups and mental care. All I can say is that at my University there are no male specific services or facilities provided by university funding or readily supplied by anyone associated with the university. I would assume (like any fool with anecdotal evidence) that this is probably common across the US public university system. The only logical conclusion that can be drawn for sure is that my (and my parent's) money goes into a system which has more concern for the actual well being of females than it does the males.

TLDR: Check individual US schools for this same discrepancy and be unsurprised by the difference. This is only evidence for (as stated by the OP) blatant sexism.

I honestly think the best way for students to organize is outside of the school's realm of influence. This is why I am a supporter of the Greek system. Fraternities provide the support structure men need and the schools, when it comes right down to it, have little say in their affairs.

Such anti-male culture will, I think, eventually bring back the technical school business. I know it's still around now, but the diploma-dependent job market may turn into a skills-dependent job market where if you are certified (college degree or not), then you have a shot at the job.

College is great, but this kind of cancer on it is only hurting the idea. With student loans, scholarships helping uppder middle class women over poor men, and fluff degree requirements, it may not even be worth it after much longer. School budgets are tight as it is. Do they really need to piss so much money on women to the point where they are so privileged that they consider equal treatment for men sexist?

Or, a man could enter a technical school, be ready to work in 1-2 years max, and have that much more time to earn money instead of racking up school debt listening to women bitch about how men dare gather in groups (from their own safe space groups). Is it ideal? No. Is it becoming more realistic? Yep.

In the video and comments (oh god why do I read those?) those who are opposed to the men's center keep bringing up some hypothetical situation in which this men's center will be just for straight white men. They can't seem to grasp that it's merely a men's center, it can (and should) be inclusive to all men. How's the women's center at SFU anyway? Are they inclusive to women of all ethnicities, sexual orientations, born sexual identities, etc? Or can I use their logic and assume that it's a straight, white, sorority girl's club? I have noticed more and more that certain groups of feminists like to feel that they can "claim" other marginalized groups, because they feel that they are marginalized.

My first post here. I hope the folks behind the SFU Men's Center proposal read this thread and are emboldened in their objective.

Such a center would serve disadvantaged male students who can't afford a fraternity but could desperately use a support system. It would also help tutor male students in etiquette, sex education, mental illness & substance abuse, family issues, social activism and charity projects, fundraising, mentoring & team building exercises. The facts are:

Men commit suicide 4 times more than women, and at higher rates in certain age brackets.
Men struggle with substance abuse far more than women.
Males are under-represented in college and drop out at higher rates.
The majority of single homeless are male.
Those that have been most impacted by the recession are male, the majority of jobs lost have been male-dominated.
Due to social stigma & a lack of resources, men are less likely to seek mental health counseling, social services, etc. The term "women and children first" refers to much more than lifeboats.

And the environment just seems to get more and more hostile to men. Special interest groups like NOW work around the clock to divert more revenue away from men to women-only causes..they did it with the ERA, now they're at it again with the Wage "Fairness" Act. Our current lame-duck administration and their Tammany Hall cronies are more than eager to accommodate them to buy votes. From the wage "fairness" act popping up again like whack-a-mole to the Life Of Julia ad, the shilling for women's votes is so obvious & shrewd. I wonder if any think tank has done an average of what men pay in taxes versus who benefits the most from the services funded by those taxes.

Most young men only have two options: go to college, which is a hostile environment for cisgendered males (just look at this male-demonizing video), or enlist in the military with all that military service entails..possible death, dismemberment, TBI and PTSD. I suppose trade school would be a third option. Many young men drop out of college and enlist due to a lack of finances, support services and direction. Males rarely if ever have the option of "marrying up" and marriage laws are heavily biased against them. The reason most divorces are initiated by women is there are few if any negative consequences to them in doing so. Women can marry a successful professional, contribute little to nothing in building assets, and just three or four years later walk away with half of everything he owns regardless of whether there's kids. I've seen it happen many times, even in my own extended family. Just look at how many law practices specializing in Divorce Law there are now.

I wonder if any of the arrogant fearmongers in this video have ever considered that a lot of the aggression, hostility and bad behavior from young men that they complain of is a result of the marginalization, demonization and the removal of healthy outlets. No connection, I'm sure.

I got off track. The trick is to voice those issues in a diplomatic way that is less inflammatory and partisan, and to address the few relevant concerns in this video that aren't bigoted strawmen arguments.
