First off, there's a huge difference as far as priorities go. From what I've experienced, it's easier for a male to get by without fitting "beauty standards" because there's often a focus on other areas. Unfortunately, it seems like with women, that's the first and main thing people focus on.

Second, I think the reason why it's not a big deal with this ad campaign is because the man in the ad is clearly having fun with it. He knows that he doesn't have the washboard abs and is totally fine with it; he's inviting people to laugh about it with him. Unfortunately, you find that kind of mentality less often with women. There are lots of women who do act like that (I remember seeing an obese female comedian who's entire routine was built around her weight recently), but it's much rarer. So, because of this, when people laugh about an unattractive women, they're often laughing at her, not with her. The same thing should apply to males, of course. It's fine to laugh with someone, but definitely not at them.

I'm upvoting, because it's interesting, but I don't think this should be on our agenda.

The fact of the matter is male is to status as woman is to looks.

A more apt comparison to 'fat woman on a billboard' would be 'homeless man on a billboard'.

We will never have perfect equity between the genders (and personally I'd rather be an ugly woman than a homeless guy... but then a homeless guy can always sort himself out, can't he? So maybe I'd rather be homeless).

I find this billboard funny; it's an interesting example of sexual dimorphism.

Hmm, I stand corrected. Still, it's not the same ad. The woman's identity is not shown. Why? I would speculate due to the fact that they consider it "wrong" to shame the woman, whereas it's fine for a guy.

Not sure what this has to do with men's rights...I thought it was common knowledge that the genders aren't really equal. Looks are a bit more important to women.
