There was a post recently with lots of commenters noting statements or questions from their therapists that helped open their eyes to LV behavior from men the commenters were dating. I’ve never had this experience. I’ve had three therapists over my adult life and I’ve discussed LVM with all of them. They all listened to me vent about being treated disrespectfully but didn’t challenge me to really examine why I was tolerating such poor treatment, and didn’t encourage me to think that I deserved better.

AFTER I decided on my own to leave each of those LVM, each therapist would agree that I made the right choice. Is this a common therapy experience? I feel like my current therapist wants me to come to my own conclusions, which I understand. But I was in a very damaging relationship last year and if she had taken ANY firm stance - such as “you don’t deserve to be screamed at in your own home” - I would’ve felt more supported and might’ve left him earlier.

Are therapists not supposed to “take a side” or make assertions about waving red flags? If I just wanted to vent I would journal, but I think a therapist should provide more than just a pair of ears. Am I totally off base? I’m currently looking for a new therapist but I’m on a waitlist. I don’t think I’ll have options any time soon.
