Even in the US in the mid 1800’s, men and women had maybe two years difference on average-if that. They waited until their mid-twenties, as their parents wanted them to be grown and aware of what they were doing.

Yes, there were old, rich men marrying young, poorer women, but the family would sometimes reluctantly agree to it to help lift their daughter out of poverty. Even then, society was not exactly warm to the men who did so.

In some ways, we are more fucked now than we were back then when it comes to how society views sickos and shift the blame on to their victims.
