Sounds like someone is in alcoholic denial.

Maybe there was a *man* in a 100 mile area and some how that man distressed that woman. Possibly years ago and she had to drink her life away. /s lol

The veins of the patriarchy run silent and deep /s

3 glasses of rose and a beer over an entire night isnt really in problem drinking territory

Apparently it's enough to give this woman a hangover... I'm assuming she must way 60 lbs

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Or just have a low tolerance. I never drink (weed is my poison of choice) and if I drank that much in a night I’d be ruined the next day.

Given we don’t live in a patriarchy, the patriarchy can’t force her to drink. Of all the excuses I’ve heard people make attempting to excuse their drunkenness, this is the most ridiculous. It’s telling many readers actually support such nonsense.

[–]Angryasfk 76 points77 points78 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Funnily enough when society was more male dominated, women drank less, and were actually the driving force behind the temperance movement!

“Patriarchy” is really just a catch all excuse for women who refuse to accept responsibility for their own poor decisions and mistakes.

[–]63daddy 32 points33 points34 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yep. I liken patriarchy to the boogeyman. Feminists can’t blame their shortcomings or supposed oppression on anything real, so they invented the patriarchy to blame.

[–]DiversityIsDivisive 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Weren't most T-totallers female?

[–]Angryasfk 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Indeed they were. They were the ones who pushed for Prohibition too!

[–]TheFio 25 points26 points27 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Heard it plenty before. Friends fiancee blamed the long time she spent on makeup and getting dressed up for the night on the patriarchy and our unfair beauty standards. Nobody asked you to, shut the fuck up.

[–]63daddy 26 points27 points28 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I get such a kick out if that one. Most guys I know complain their wife or girlfriend friend spends too much time on make up, doing their hair, etc.

Women spend hours getting made up specifically to be noticed, then when they are, feminists claim objectification.

The hypocrisy is truly amazing.

[–]tenchineuro 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's one of the ways women compete for social standing. She's not dressing up for you.

[–]63daddy 11 points12 points13 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yep, she wants to be noticed. It’s her choice not something forced on her by her man or the patriarchy.

[–]tryingimreallytrying 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"I'm not doing it for you, I want to look attractive to me"

So you can feel that other people find you attractive which is what your confidence relies on.

You also just told me you think I've low standards if you think I think you're beautiful when you look more natural which lowers your self esteem.

So toxic but so "normal". But that's not the patriarchy, it's your insecurity.

[–]RadioUnfriendly 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Just about everything is nonsense these days. Have you seen the video of that guy, I think from the CIA. He said something like, "We'll know our work is done when everything the American public believes isn't true." Mainstream news is just lying propaganda these days.

makes a deft and passionate argument that modern women drink to excess to escape the realities of living in a still-too-sexist world.

tbh this sounds like something an alcoholic would say to excuse their alcohol abuse. No alcoholic will ever admit to their problem, they always have an excuse for it.

"I'm not an alcoholic; I just drink half a bottle of wine in the morning, afternoon, evening and then a few more sherries and a gin and tonic to escape the pressures of blabla society blabla difficult life blabla"

https://www.news.com.au/national/crime/i-thought-she-was-going-to-kill-me-no-justice-for-man-stabbed-by-woman-wielding-high-heel/news-story/b81e0b032cffd828c734754471c31faa

Also Australia seems to agree. A drunk woman stabbed a man in the head in an unprovoked attack. Sentence: $250 fine with no conviction recorded on her record.

[–]bottleblank 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

makes a deft and passionate argument that modern women drink to excess to escape the realities of living in a still-too-sexist world.

You could make the same argument about lonely men too. As somebody who drinks far more than they should in order to black out the loneliness and pretend I'm doing something fun, I can sure attest to that.

I don't actually disagree that it may be a systemic problem driving many people to drink, to escape, to self-medicate, but blaming "living in a sexist world" in the west in 2022 is the absolute flimsiest excuse for that I've ever heard.

There are reasons people might be depressed, miserable, seeking escapism, and trying anything to desperately change their outlook or brain chemistry, even for just a few hours, many of them are legitimate, troubling, serious issues. But this one, I'm afraid, doesn't really cut it. She may have her own issues, which is understandable, and she should get all the help she needs to resolve them, but it sounds like an excuse based on a faulty premise to me.

"no alcoholic will ever admit to their problem"

Ya that's definitely not an exaggeration or a lie at all

[–]DallasTruther 10 points11 points12 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I mean I'm an alcoholic and admit it, but I didn't feel the need to oppose the guy bc I understood his general point and didn't feel offended or anything.

[–]kudichangedlives 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh I'm not offended or anything, I also used to be an alcoholic. I'm just a nitpicky punk is all, and if I get downvoted for that, well then I would say that's understandable and fair.

[–]Angryasfk 15 points16 points17 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

That’s one of the things that makes them alcoholics!

[–]kudichangedlives 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

The only thing that makes a person an alcoholic is a dependency on alcohol

[–]Angryasfk 13 points14 points15 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Certainly. But thinking it’s normal to drink throughout the day, and not be able to not do that is a clear sign of dependency.

[–]kudichangedlives 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It definitely is, but to say that absolutely NO alcoholic will admit it is a huge exaggeration

[–]Angryasfk 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Those that do are on the first step to recovery.

[–][deleted] 40 points41 points42 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Did I get drunk last night because of the patriarchy?

Short answer: No

Long answer: Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

[–]DiversityIsDivisive 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Classic and quality. Forgot about this one.

[–]veedub447[S] 25 points26 points27 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

We really need to send a letter to the Greater Chicago Patriarchy Chapter to stop getting women drunk, this is a clear rule violation, the Patriarchy is only allowed to get men drunk.

[–]Angryasfk 14 points15 points16 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Especially since “the patriarchy” used to deny women the right to drink in public like that! Very sneaky “the patriarchy”. It’s only those in the know who realise that those white male homeless bums are more powerful and privileged than Oprah and Megan Markel! That’s really sneaky of “the patriarchy”. /s

[–]White_Immigrant 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We're having our local patriarchy meeting at the pub next Wednesday. I'll be sure to arrange a letter to be sent to save this poor soul from the evils of having a few too many.

[–]dumwitxh 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

lmao

[–]Glass-Dimension-8827 15 points16 points17 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Nothing more off-putting to me than a woman who can’t handle her alcohol. I don’t drink, so maybe I’m biased, but gross. Even grosser to blame men for it. There’s a pandemic of blamelessness going around that is leading to the stupidity rates to rise. No accountability whatsoever. Just endless finger pointing and whataboutism.

[–]Angryasfk 14 points15 points16 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Let women drink. But let them be held as responsible as men are. Half a century ago, women weren’t allowed into public bars at pubs. Feminists complained and the ban was removed. And now it’s apparently the fault of “the patriarchy” if women go there! Why does this “thinking” get any respect?

[–]Glass-Dimension-8827 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Let anyone drink, but they should drink responsibly and not point fingers.

[–]Angryasfk 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Absolutely!

If I lost my job and was terrified of losing my house (I’m making a general comment here) and drank too much at the bar and got pulled over for DUI, I’m “really sure” the magistrate would dismiss the charge because these things “made me drink”! And the worst is that we’re talking about women who are in work (well paid work btw) and progressing fairly satisfactory in their careers. The poor didums!

[–]BetterOffCamping 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Interesting read. Other than the unthinking assumption that the patriarchy is a thing, it is a reasonable article casting doubt upon the idea that women drink because of patriarchy. She points out that in general people sometomes drink to deal with daily stress regardless of gender.

Now, if we can just end the "plotting" against men part.

[–]stealthAndSpeed 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Blaming society for your addiction is pathetic. Any woman that blames society for her drinking and depression is just looking to escape guilt. Just like any man that blames society for drinking or depression is just making excuses for their bad behaviour.

[–]Aedrian87 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Drinking, I agree in most cases but depression, that is a tough one. Depression is a horrible pit that sometimes has a cause, sometimes it does not, and how difficult it is to get proper mental health is a societal issue that most often helps the feedback loop, making said depression even worse, especially for men, who have a shit-ton less resources on the mental health, and hell on the whole health front.

[–]tenchineuro 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Depression is a horrible pit that sometimes has a cause, sometimes it does not,

I tend to think everything has a cause, or causes. Now figuring out what they are and what to do about them, that's another story.

[–]oncothrow 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh man, I'm sorry, but after reading that, I'm going to get so very snide.

In it, writer Kristi Coulter makes a deft and passionate argument that modern women drink to excess to escape the realities of living in a still-too-sexist world. "I see that booze is the oil in our motors, the thing that keeps us purring when we should be making other kinds of noise," writes Coulter, who is now sober.

Wow. Unable to cope without booze.

So we're talking about that "still too sexist world. You know, I acknowledge quite easily that women in less developed countries have it harder, but they don't really have a women's drinking culture in most of them, at least compared to upper-middle class women in the States.

Which means that either they're far more resilient than you are, or you've got a serious alcohol problem.

Curiously, apparently alcohol for women is cast as a coping mechanism for dealing with the tortured existence of life in the Patriarchal hellscape, the sole source of succour to numb the pain of your truly desperate middle-class existence. However whenever I've seen the topic of alcoholism come up for men, it's just a sign of their inherent Patriarchal attitude and dominance, and personal failings (which they are allowed under the Patriarchy).

There is one part of the article that I agree with, although I suspect that this is unintentional on the author's part:

I don't think Coulter is entirely wrong. But it's also impossible to prove that she's right. Like most women who call themselves feminists, I know that living in a sexist world shapes my life and choices. It's probably why I feel "cleaner" with shaved legs and like to wear bright lipstick. In one specific instance, I'm pretty sure it's why I was denied a promotion. In most cases, though, when it comes to decisions I make, it's difficult to separate what is and isn't related to the patriarchy. Do I feel more powerful with short hair because of the patriarchy? Do I pick my cuticles when I get nervous because of the patriarchy? Do I have a distant relationship with my mom because of the patriarchy? Did I get drunk last night because of the patriarchy? Who knows.

"Who knows" indeed. When you see the Patriarchy in everything and cast its power as absolute, you literally cannot disprove that anything you've done or experienced is the result of it.

Everything you do, everything you think, everything you say, every bad thing that ever happened to you, somewhere, 2-3-4 links up that chain, is the Patriarchy, dictating all, destroying all. Choice is an illusion, personal responsibility as impossible a concept as for any slave.

On the podcast I co-host with my friend Aminatou Sow, we are often drinking wine as we record. Some episodes even feature the "glug, glug" noise of us refilling our glasses. In our online store, we sell a portable wine tumbler branded with our podcast logo. We also discuss the patriarchy a lot. I'd never considered that the two things might be related.

Let me know when you stop selling wine tumblers. You know, since it's Patriarchy that enforced this.

Even if they are, I'm not sure that's such a terrible thing. Perhaps it's because I've never had a drug or alcohol problem, but for me, drinking with other women isn't just coping or complacency.

Yeah, about that, could we rewind to that first paragraph again please? Thanks:

This morning I woke up with a hangover softly pulsing in my left temple. I took a quick inventory: Last night I went from happy-hour drinks with a former colleague (two glasses of rosé — or was it three?), then to dinner with a friend (another glass of rosé), then to a nightcap with another friend (a beer).

Uhm... does someone maybe want to tell her?

[–]InterestingStation70 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Another example of how nobody denies women Agency like a Feminist.

[–]Dunkolunko 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's funny, I became a misogynist because of a woman who drank

(Joke, I didn't become a misogynist but I did learn to hate abusive and toxic women)

[–]WeEatBabies 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Mam', this is a matriarchy!

[–]2wicky 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I now treat articles like this like a drinking game, except, every time I come across the word patriarchy, instead of taking a shot, I replace it with the word "the devil".

As in: "Maybe patriarchy the devil does drive us to drink, just as patriarchy the devil drives us to shave our legs and wear bright lipstick."

And for extra shots:

sexism => sinful

misogyny => heresy

misogynist => heretic

Once you turn them into religious texts, it unmasks the fact that they are not really offering any solutions, but are instead scapegoating their own responsibilities.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You know what the first step is? Admitting that you are a feminist.

[–]Above-Average-Foot 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]alclarkey 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ooh, that's an interesting take. So since men tend to abuse alcohol and drugs more often than women, do we get to use her logic and say that there's actually more sexism against men?

[–]A9SteakSauce 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

imagine using the patriarchy to blame for your substance abuse problem

Get a fucking life lmfao

[–]rosewiththornzzz2 points 4 years ago [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link

Who is that lady to speak for women like this? I don’t drink because I live in a sexist society. I drink because my work (which is all female employees btw because few men in my town take interest in working at a library) stresses me the fuck out. I drink because I have GAD which is a mental issue. I drink because I dislike myself, not because of “societal expectations of what a woman is” but because my family made me the black sheep. I drink to get away from reality for a few minutes. I don’t drink because of the “patriarchy” because there is no patriarchy. The lady who wrote that article was WAY out of line. Also ive never read that article so the gal that this was about was also out of line in saying most women have to have read this. And I don’t want to read it

[–]mikesteane 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The drinking is not solving your problems. Set your self a set of small sustainable self-improvement goals and when you have a track record of succeeding in the small ones, give up the drinking for short achievable periods. After doing that several times, stop altogether, your life will improve.

[–]rosewiththornzzz1 points 4 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

I don’t drink a lot to be honest. Just here and there when I need it.

[–]mikesteane 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Lake-Solid 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If by living in a patriarchy you mean that masculinity is the dominant drive that fosters and intelligent environment where people can navigate their own decisions to make the best hopeful outcome for that environment, yes I suppose we do live in a patriarchy. These sort of people need to stop pretending like woman can't learn to be masculine by some measure and have to essentially be treated like children every which way.

If thats too much of a problem, which I wish it wasn't, maybe you should stay in your living room. :/

Marxism. Pure and simple.

Have you actually read the article?

[–]Angryasfk 14 points15 points16 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Did you?

She recognised the weakness of the claim, but still left it as an open question. Perhaps because she feels herself as a feminist and a “victim” of sexism! I know of several jobs I would have had if I’d been female. Perhaps I should “blame the matriarchy” if I drink too much! Or hint that it “could be” the “root cause”!

The claim actually doesn’t hold water. In the 1920’s and earlier, when society was clearly male dominated (in terms of public life) women drank much less, certainly in public settings, and were the main force behind the temperance movement. It’s no coincidence that Prohibition and women’s suffrage were contemporary events in the US!

It would not surprise me in the least if feminists in 30 years are blaming “the patriarchy” for women being “sluts”, ignoring all the current feminist talk about “slut-shaming” being one of the “evils of patriarchy”. It’s pathetic!

lol, they're doing it right now.. I was reading one of the more woo feminist subs here and they are seriously hating on sex workers because patriarchy.

[–]Angryasfk 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So it’s already beginning! LMAO!!!

[+]AnteatersAreAwesome -14 points-13 points-12 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Exactly, she leaves it as an open question, whereas the person sharing this article put the catchy headline 'Woman blames "the patriarchy"for getting drunk'

Times change and people's attitudes change, so I don't see how the temperance movement has anything to do with this.

[–]Angryasfk 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She implies it’s true and quotes a “reformed” female alcoholic who does indeed claim it’s all the fault of “patriarchy”!

As for “times change and attitudes change”, perhaps feminists should wrap their heads around that when they come out with this “patriarchy” bs and going on about stuff that’s decades or more old to push their victimisation!

My point was that when women really were “oppressed” by “the patriarchy”, they drank way less than men and promoted abstinence! The tale just doesn’t add up.

I mean all she sais is she drinks to forget her problems, which is something almost everyone does at some point; wheter it is to forget about "the patriarchy" or actually existing ones.

Meeting and old colleague (and friend i suppose): What a horrible world We live in, I must bury myself in alcohol

Bullshit that woman just drank something for some special occasions and have a very low tolerance for alcohol

Can we have a rule addition, all source links via archive? I really begrudge giving crap like that article even 1 click.

Oh man, and this was a mere five day before America diss troyed itz duhmockrasee by electing Orange Hitler! I'm sure she's in the grave by now from liver failure. "The Patriarchy Made Me Do It"

I get why you posted this. But you shouldn't have. It literally just got a fucking nutjob extra clicks. Doesn't matter how we feel or what we say about it. It got extra views and that only helps the crazy woman who wrote it.

[–]kafeinn 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This person sick, toxic and disgusting.

[–]wanthonio31 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Do we just create journalist opportunities for anybody now? Don't get me started on that article itself too. Imagine manufacturing something as a patriarchy to evade whatever accountability for your habits.

[–]Big_Chocolate_420 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

so if a can woman choose to drink, she lives in a patriarchy?

And in the past women were not allowed to drink.

They started drinking with the feminist uprising.

This means...feminists established the patriarchy. Dum Dum Dum.

introduction:

I felt the twinge of a hangover, I immediately thought of an essay that I — and, judging by Facebook and Twitter, almost every woman I know — read recently.

disregard all ideas, this woman lives online

[–]MastermindX 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The best part of this article is how much she humble-brags about her life, which apparently consists of having meetings in coffee-shops, eating expensive Spanish food and wine, and then going out to drink cocktails in the middle of the week, while at the same time complaining about how oppressed she is and how she needs those drinks to escape her horrible reality.

Pick a lane, you can't brag about your wonderful life and in the same article complain that your life is terrible.

I wonder if all men actually left the planet and traveled elsewhere. Would women still be blaming *men* for all their mistakes and troubles?

[–]thefujirose 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Doubt. This is totally Satire

[–]veedub447[S] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

no, I think she's for real.

[–]thefujirose 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, you don't understand. I refuse to believe this occured and isn't satire regardless. Please, I need this.
