That's why a first date should be something like a walk in the park. That's also easy to cut short if it's not working out.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points16 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And doesn't require much money if she's only there to freeload.

[–]elebrin 18 points19 points20 points 3 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Or a downtown music festival, or a turn around a free art or music exhibit.

A walk in a park where you will spend quite a bit of time on your own with someone is a bad idea... she may just drug you for your money or make an accusation. It's better to stay in public.

One of my first dates with my now-wife was actually playing video games together remotely. No food bill, no worries about the cops getting called if she decided she didn't like me, and we only marginally knew where each other lived.

[–]Fausty79 -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, as a woman I am probably not comfortable taking a walk around a park away from people with some guy I don’t know.

[–]elebrin 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I think most men would trust women in this circumstance, but I'm not convinced we are right to do so. It's not hard to get yourself a syringe of something and jab it into someone's leg while you are walking next to them, then you can take all their shit. Or you could just take him back in the woods, rip up your clothes a little, then start screaming that he's assaulting you.

[–]Fausty79 -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Tell me about all the times that has happened vs. all the times women have been sexually assaulted on a first date.

Some of you just make up stuff to hate women for

[–]elebrin 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Look, ultimately, if you aren't trusting us, why the fuck should we trust you? On an individual basis, or on a general, societal basis. Either one. If women in general aren't going to trust men to be generally decent and safe, then I am not going to trust a woman until I understand her to not think that way. And it doesn't matter how much someone screams or yells about how that's unfair, I get to decide on my own, personal behavior and what sort of safety I require.

That's what it comes down to for me. Trust is a two way street, it's a mutually reciprocal thing. It has to be. Something doesn't need to actually happen in order for it to be a risk of happening. Why should I trust you or anyone else I've never met before to not fucking drug my ass and steal all my shit the first second we are alone together?

I don't hate women, I don't hate anyone, but I am interested in my own safety and protection, men absolutely ARE the targets of violence, and I'm very, VERY distrustful.

[–]Fausty79 -5 points-4 points-3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If a guy gets attacked and drugged by a woman, people will be surprised, they won’t blame him. If a woman gets attacked because she put herself in a situation with a guy she hardly knows, society will tell her she should have known better. You know why? Because the second scenario is far more common and it would be stupid to ignore that statistic.

I don’t think anyone should trust anyone without it being earned. I don’t think women should go to remote places with men they don’t know, I don’t think men should leave their wallet sitting on the table if they get up to go to the bathroom if they don’t know the person they are leaving it with. I believe in common sense and earned trust.

Men are the targets of violence, mostly by other men. Woman are also more likely to be targeted by men. Men are far more likely to be the perpetrators of violence. It sucks, I know. I’d prefer men be less violent as well. I know not all men are, but it’s enough for us to be cautious. I absolutely think that if you harbor a genuine fear (no matter how irrational) of a woman drugging you in the woods, you shouldn’t go in the woods with women you don’t know.

[–]elebrin 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If a man gets drugged and attacked by a woman, they will point and laugh and call him weak and pathetic and say he deserved it.

I don't have that fear, but I do have a fear of false accusations. I don't care how uncommon it is, I interact with a lot of women, even if it's only one in ten thousand that would even think of doing such that means I've probably dealt with a few in my life. I don't say it to people, but I follow the Mike Pence rule but I don't generally tell anyone that I am. I just... do it, and don't talk about it (except online on an anonymous forum like this). If it came up, I'd apologize profusely and say it won't happen again, then change nothing.

[–]Kodiak01 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

First date with my now-wife was a hike on a nearby trail. I did buy dinner afterward, but it was a very modest price and a type of food I never had before (Thai), so I would have chalked it up to experience regardless.

[–]satellite779 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Getting someone to go on a hike as a first date is really difficult IMO. Middle of nowhere in a forest with a stranger scares a lot of women. Or maybe it's just me...

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It may have been a hike on an urban walking trail.

[–]cuppa_tea_4_me 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah you are right

[–]TraehNoil 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Makes sense, but if you say that they bail.

[–]Ok-Translator2294 122 points123 points124 points 3 years ago (25 children) | Copy Link

It is what we've always known. The only reason we still debate about who pays is because some women only want freebies. If they didn't, they'd happily pay their share and forget about it.

Also remember how the debate is often about it the man should pay or if they should split the bill, woman paying is rarely mentioned.

If a woman can do everything that a man can, what's stopping them from paying the whole bill?

Also when they do pay, it's not always in good faith. As you can see here

[–][deleted] 79 points80 points81 points 3 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link

They’ll tell you “whoever asks should pay”

As if the woman ever asks.

[–]Ok-Translator2294 23 points24 points25 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly!

They'll either trick you into asking or just wait till you give in. Then of course you're paying.

[–]ExMuzzy 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

It's either that excuse or that women spend more time and money on looking nice for you so they shouldn't be paying or splitting during the date. Like I thought they only wore makeup and dressed up for themselves.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

They only say certain things when it benefits them

[–]Alarming-Abrocoma625 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

"My body my choice" but if you go overseas to have sex with foreign sex workers you are a disgusting pig."

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

What are you talking about

[–]Alarming-Abrocoma625 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Feminists will use this argument to push for abortion but shame men who approach prostitutes. Even though it's a service women willingly chose to do, women still want to hold men accountable. I.e, Sweden made it illegal for men to buy the service but didn't criminalize the women who sold it.

[–]skllyskullstyle 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You know whats contradictory? Some feminist denominations will say that sex work is empowering while other denominations say that its patriarchal.

That should prove that not even feminist cant decide what feminism is. Yet they make up cop outs to lie about what i just said.

[–]Fausty79 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, here’s the thing, it can be either. Some women have a choice in the matter and sincerely choose sex work in a safe environment where they have protection and control. Many (most) women do not. Sex workers are often exploited individuals, many do so through force, coercion, or desperation and many face threats of violence, are raped at a higher rate, and are victimized in many other ways. That’s not empowering, obviously. Unfortunately, there’s also the fact that human trafficking is higher in direct correlation with legalized prostitution in other countries, which seems counter intuitive but is actually true. Since women and children are by far the largest population effected by trafficking, it would seem that the male desire for sex objects drives the industry.

So, for those of you who don’t get it… woman who wants to join the sex trade, does so of her own choosing, and has a safe environment to conduct herself in: great, you do you. Woman being exploited to use her body to feed herself or even just keep herself safe: not awesome

[–]skllyskullstyle 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Not only that but why doesnt a the man say that too? "My body my choice" because according to this gynocentric society some of them say its "abuse" of the man withholds sex from his partner. (If you want ill see if i can find the article again.) Or what about "My wallet my choice"? A lot of women wont say it but they think they are entitled to a man's hard earned money because they were raised that way. You could also feel it.

[–]Alarming-Abrocoma625 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago* (6 children) | Copy Link

I know which thread you are referring too. It's about the husband who was coerced into having sex even though he bought her a house, worked full time, put his kids in a daycare, cleaned the house and handled all the bills. If he didn't give her his 20-minute break, she would give him the cold shoulder.

After I looked through the comments, I was surprised to see a non - feminist subreddit plagued with so much one-sided arguments siding with the women.

All I can take from this is that women are not as fair as they think in a relationship. It's easy for some women to say, how much money you make doesn't matter when the husband has a stable and high paying job. But, if you're poor/ broke and bills start piling up, that's when the fighting and abuse starts so the point is pretty much moot.

[–]skllyskullstyle 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Actually i was refering to a different article but this works too. This is something only us men know about and what the manosphere talks about as well. But nobody still listens to men in a gynocentrist society

[–]Alarming-Abrocoma625 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

I think the biggest issue with anecdotal accounts is that they can be biased or exaggerated no matter what. I saw a recent post on askfeminists complaining that malesmentalhealth was full of misogynists and incels which was a stretch and a half because after I took a look:

1: The sub isn't even that active with 43k users and 2 mods

  1. The last person who used the word incel to describe himself was about a month ago while the guy who admit he hated women was doing drugs to avoid these negative feelings. Despite the glaring title, both people were seeking help and trying not to be incels.

And the post received a hundred upvotes.....

Obviously, men can exaggerate a story as much as they want to but even when they are falsely accused or in an abusive relationship, I have never heard them use words like bitch or cunt to degrade their girlfriends / wives.

[–]skllyskullstyle 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. People are so used to caering to gynocentrism and feminism that its just ingrained in society. Apparently women can do no wrong but as soon as a man sticks up to womens entitlement he's "xyz". And he's ruined.

[–]Icy-Start5536 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

And even if you do ask them out for a walk, she can still pull you into a restaurant and expect you to pay. By that logic it should be her

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It’s a false logical statement.

It looks logical because yes, if you ask you should pay. It makes sense.

Until you realize that men are always asking.

[–]ohisama 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

As if just by asking someone is forcing them. Are they not saying yes to the date? Ate they not participating and eating?

If they demand equal pay for equal or sometimes even unequal work, they should start paying for equal dates as well.

Why suddenly follow the gender norms where the man has to provide for the delicate woman who can't earn for herself?

[–]Outrageous_Fondant12 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Idk, my fiancé is pretty good about paying for stuff even though she makes way less money than me. If it’s her idea to go out to eat, she always pays.

[–]Magical-Hummus 23 points24 points25 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"power move"

What a red flag.

[–]sekametelisoppa 12 points13 points14 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If I invite someone for drinks yes I’m expecting to pay, but if they invite me for drinks it’s rhe opposite again.

But if we’re like both ”should we go and have couple of drinks?” Then I’m expecting to split it.

[–]thisisafact 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I’ve never understood this logic. Your second scenario is also an invite, there’s no scenario where both people initiate at exactly the same time.

An invite to have a drink should never be met with an assumption it’s going to be paid for. If I invited a friend for a drink I would never expect to be paying for them.

[–]Knight-Bishop 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Y’all are thinking too hard. Going on dates is all about gaining experience to protect yourself in the FUTURE. Which One Is Better? Having Spent $10K on Dates or a $500K Divorce Settlement?

[–]OriginalHuckleberry3 44 points45 points46 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Coffee is a great first date Or Stop paying.

Simple Fix

[–]aigars2 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It works always actually. Women not there on even plainfield automatically remove themselves.

Second best or even first date is one night stand.

[–]2020bowman 37 points38 points39 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Drinks is better.

If the lady doesn't at least offer.... she's done.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Some of us guys are simple too and dont want a fancy drink. Just get us a beer of our choice that simple and we are good

[–]delocalelectron 67 points68 points69 points 3 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

They've got the same money as we have, it's illegal to pay them less. So, they can dig deep, or become an out-of-dater.

[–]IceCorrect 42 points43 points44 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Wrong, they earn more than men - Article

That's why you agree before the date to split the bill. If she is 100% reluctant, then that is an easy skip.

Are we supposed to be dating? I thought dating was supposed to have a purpose, like marriage.

[–]Electronic_Demand_61 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If I pay the bill I expect her to pick up the tip, then I judge on how well she tips.

[–]lectrohS_naisA 13 points14 points15 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're an idiot if you pay for someone else's meal. Go 50/50 or don't bother.

[–]Another_Basic_NPC 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I made a YouTube video, and I said splitting is ideal, or the person who asks out the other pays but just the first time. This is also why a coffee or drinks is great! Anyway, I got a bunch of comments telling me I'm dead wrong, because of the time and preparation it takes for a woman to "doll" up. Yet, I can blow through 50-100 dollars in a night "because I'm supposed to" and never hear from them again? Errrh no.

Splitting is ideal as I want someone who is independent, or If I get drinks, maybe she grabs the movie tickets. Fair is fair!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

because of the time and preparation it takes for a woman to "doll" up

They pretend to "doll up" for their date, but we all know they do it for themselves.

[–]Still-Association-52 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I literally tell them to come casually. It's easier for me to hit the gym, shave and wear a pretty plain but good form fitting shirt to show off my tats lol.

Gets them everytime.

[–]BrokeMacMountain 23 points24 points25 points 3 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

I hVe a crazy idea, but stick with me. What if, and hear me out, what if..... the woman paid? huh? huh? yeah? instead of the man always oaying cor everything, the woman offered to pay instead? that would be "empowering" for her, and provide a lavel, equal playing field.

O know, the concept is bonkers, but just imagine a going on a date where both people are treated as equal. /s

[–]gussyboy13 10 points11 points12 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Or both people just pay for their own meals? I’ve brought that up to people and they act like it’a not acceptable

[–]delocalelectron 10 points11 points12 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Men finally refusing to be treated like suckers, women most affected.

[+]IrrungenWirrungen -16 points-15 points-14 points 3 years ago* (10 children) | Copy Link

How would that make you equal?

Edit: WTF is this sub? Getting downvotes for asking a question! 🤣

[–]BrokeMacMountain 10 points11 points12 points 3 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Equaity would be men & women doing the same ting for the same reason. Instead of the woman expecting the man to pay.

[+]IrrungenWirrungen -11 points-10 points-9 points 3 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

You said yourself the woman should pay because it would be “empowering”.

That doesn’t make her an equal.

[–]chill_stoner_0604 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

So, by your own admission, one gender always being expected to pay is inequality right?

[–]IrrungenWirrungen -5 points-4 points-3 points 3 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Yes.

[–]chill_stoner_0604 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Ok so do you see the problem now? There can be a whole article about how men need to always pay and nobody bats an eye (besides us of course) but someone makes a comment suggesting the reverse and white knights start appearing

[–]IrrungenWirrungen -3 points-2 points-1 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

My problem was that you said it would make a woman equal and it would be empowering to her at the same time.

It doesn’t make sensethats it really.

[–]chill_stoner_0604 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It would. It makes her more equal in the sense that she is expected to bear the financial burden which is something traditionally put on men.

It's empowering because it shows that she is willing to take a step away from tradition and a step closer to actual equality.

Not that hard to understand

[–]IrrungenWirrungen 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Doesn’t make her equal though.

50/50 would be equal.

[–]shit-zen-giggles 10 points11 points12 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So next time you’re finishing up a first date, you might want to make sure to split the bill.

That's a new tone, I haven't heard before in a mainstream news source.

[–]Kwarntnd 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In both groups, the researchers noted that those who engage in ‘foodie calls’ also scored highly in ‘dark triad’ personality traits - which are linked to “deceptive and exploitative behaviour”.

Tell these women that by not offering to pay they're upholding the patriarchy.

But again, most women are completely fine with it as long as they're the primary beneficiaries.

[–]sharksville 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fact. Back when I was in the dating scene I would only pay for what I had no matter the total amount. Some people say that hat for first dates do something else other than go on a dinner date, but for me I thought it was a good way to see her character. First date would be dinner and I’d pay my own share and let her worry about her bill. And I’d make it known that I’m only gonna pay my own bill on the first date

high i would imagine.

Coffee for first date, especially if online dating--makes sense, low stakes, see if there's any chemistry and confirming they're not actually a 65 year old trucker dude named Bill. Can convert to a walk in the park/neighborhood. Had one gal say no, she wanted a "real" date, and I said no thanks.

I always offer to pay but do take positive note when they offer to pay or split. I'm totally good with an agreement that they get the next one.

Current gf makes about the same as me, but has fewer expenses. She's super egalitarian but oddly only offers to pay about a quarter of the time. Kind of drives me nuts...its not break-up worthy, but its not her best trait. I mean, the whole "equality only when it benefits you" is a pretty common trait among humanity generally.

[–]SpicyNippss 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I always buy ice cream or coffee. Cheap, and it weeds out the sociopaths that think it's okay to use people.

Wow. Its true. It really is true. I have always had this feeling that this would be true. Here is the evidence. Looks like us men really are being manipulated and taken advantage of. Its so hard to take in but its true.

This should show that people who say that we live in a patriarchy or grant value towatds feminism are delusional. There is just no way. Thank so much for showing us evidence sir. One last thing before i head out.

Think about how they subject themselves to the indignity of dating someone for food, It's incredible how broke most women are. No matter how much help and support they get from the state and corporations and divorces, women hate work and still prefer to be fed by men.

Do you see homeless guys dating gays for food? no. But women do this all the time.

I'm 21 so maybe my generation is different but girls my age pays their stuff everytime

[–]bionicmook -5 points-4 points-3 points 3 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Firstly, who goes out with someone they aren’t into just for a free burger or something? I would never. I don’t suffer fools easily, so if I’m not into a man, I’m not going to spend two or three hours with him just to save fifteen or twenty bucks. Anyways…

The way I see it, I never expect a guy to pay on a date in this day and age. It’s 2022, and it seems a bit archaic (or at the very least, old fashioned) to expect a gentleman to cover date expenses.

When I’m on a date, if the man offers to pay, I will probably accept his offer. (I would decline if It seemed like he was just being polite and clearly did not want to put forth the gesture, or if I knew for a fact he was struggling financially, or even if we just hadn’t really hit it off.) If I offer to pay, I would expect the man to accept my offer. If no says anything when the bill comes, I will assume we’re each paying for ourselves. So, if he offers, I accept. If I offer, he should accept. No offers, we split it.

[–]ohisama 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Do you wait for him to offer or make the first move?

[–]bionicmook -4 points-3 points-2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, I don’t wait for the other person to offer. I guess I just play it by ear. I would pick up the check if I feel so inclined. If nothing is said, I’d assuming we’re splitting. If he offers, I may accept. It really just depends on the situation. I just play it by ear.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Same. I'm living in Germany currently and it's pretty normal here to split the bill. I even pay for dates (I'm a woman) since I can be a bit of a dictator when it comes to date planning, but I do plan fun dates.

I do know women who refuse to pay on the first dates. I think it's the influence of older generations of women telling us that if a man doesn't pay on the first date that he's not a gentleman and doesn't respect you. It made sense for them because they had little earning power and most likely would be stay at home moms after marriage.

That's not the case nowadays, so we need to move forward from this mindset. Also, I find splitting the bill freeing. There's no guilt about how much he spent if it doesn't work out.

[–]bionicmook 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I was thinking exactly the same thing! Women didn’t have earning power back when men would pay for dates. Women went straight from living with their parents, to marriage, and would rarely have their own source of income. Now that women have more independence and are rarely without their own income, it’s no longer a foregone conclusion that a man will pay. I prefer to either pay for myself or pay for both him and myself, that way I don’t need to feel guilty ordering the steak or that extra cocktail or dessert. By the way, I’m a female from the US, just to give context.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Hi there! I'm also from the US. I am from a smaller city in the South, so I grew up with that kind of traditional mindset that the man should pay and a lot of my female classmates aspired to be housewives.

When I moved to Germany for the first time, I got introduced to the idea that splitting the bill isn't some statement about a guy's interest in me, it's just fair.

I guess for women and men living in more progressive areas of the US splitting the bill is more common?

[–]bionicmook 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I’m a northern girl, Midwest technically, but I want to move down south. I’ve spent a lot of time in the Clear Water/Tampa area and I’ve spent a lot of family vacations at Hilton Head. I don’t align with the south’s politics or social beliefs, but I can’t stand these Ohio winters. I’d give anything to move to New Orleans…I’ve also always wanted to spend a year in Germany. Where in Germany are you living? Where I’m from, men and women almost always split the bill. Even once I’m officially dating someone, we usually pay for ourselves. I’ve actually lived with people I dated where we still split the bill at restaurants and bars. Obviously, that’s not true every time. I’ll sometimes pick up the check for a date, and sometimes I let the other person pay, if they offer. Generally, I’m more likely to pick up the bill if I made the plans and reservation, and vice versa, but mostly it’s played by ear, and more often than not ends up in splitting the bill.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm living in Southern Germany in Stuttgart. I definitely recommend living here or abroad for a at least a year. It's so eye opening.

Yeah, the Midwest has a different culture. A lot of German influence actually.

I'm from South Carolina, but so winter is that a couple months when you can't wear flip flops. I don't blame you on the winters. Good luck!

I just looked up Stuttberg, and there’s some really beautiful architecture there!!! Seriously, the buildings are stunning. And you’re right, everyone in the Midwest seems to have German heritage, myself included.

I always took girls out for coffee on a first date, only costs a couple of bucks, Men who spend a bunch of money on a women on a first date are dumb. This isn’t a mens rights issue, this is a don’t be dumb issue

[–]bionicmook -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

After reading some of the comments I have one more thought:

The concept of men paying for dates comes from a time when the vast majority of women didn’t work. Most all women work now, so it’s not longer needed for men to pay. That doesn’t mean it’s not a nice gesture if a man does pay, or if a woman wants to pay for the man. Some women find old fashioned notions romantic and gentlemanly. Some women prefer to be generous and offer to treat her date to a night out. It just depends on the couple. What is true for all new couples, is that it’s 2022, and no one should expect to be treated. Just play it by ear and see what happens. I’m a server/bartender, and I would say most date checks nowadays are usually split, but there are exceptions. Just do what’s right for you.

[–]ohisama 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Old fashioned notions are romantic only as far as they benefit women.

[–]bionicmook -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don’t know. I’m not an old fashioned person, so I don’t personally get it. I do think it’s a nice gesture for a woman or a man to be generous and offer to pay if they like the other person. It’s also fine to split it. I definitely don’t expect a man to pay these days, and that should not be the expectation. Like I said in my other comment, I just play it by ear. Sometimes I go out planning to offer to pay. Sometimes I assume we’ll split. Sometimes I think he might offer to pay, but I would not demand or expect it. I don’t know. It’s just not a huge deal to me.

Indeed But there is this weird way of thinking in a lot of person where a man should pay at the first date.

There some women who think that any man who don't pay are just not worth the time.

They have the mentality of "if he ask for a date, he should the one to pay"

Can you explain why discussing cultural trends featuring the man-as-provider model is not related to men's advocacy?

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points22 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But it is a great jumping off point to complain about women online dating so that should be interesting.

Fixed that for you

[–]mikesteane 17 points18 points19 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Actually, it does. That men are expected to be providers is a major factor in motivating them to earn more thus causing the earnings gap about which we hear so much nonsense.

[–]Alarming-Abrocoma625 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not only that, men also work jobs nobody want to do. Professional welders, construction workers, and car mechanics are willing to hire anyone to meet the high demand but who wants to be dirty, tired, and stressed after a long day? I love lifting weights and getting exercise but when I can hardly walk after a 12 hour shift, I am basically sacrificing my body and health to provide.

[–]DeVaudevilleVillain 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is why a first date should always either not be food related or you agree to go Dutch on the bill. If she refuses to split the check, then you know why she said yes in the first place and can move on without any doubts. The ones that only go out with you for a free meal usually aren’t worth the effort in my experience.

[–]vwatchrepair 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

How many guys have the slightest thought in their head that they could leave home and get a meal, a drink, or even a piece of bubble gum if they had no money on them. I cannot even fathom this idea at all. Unicorns are more real to me than this idea.

[–]McFeely_Smackup 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I went to a club years back with a friend, and his ex girlfriend was standing in front of the place with a friend of hers. He chatted them up and they asked if he could pay their cover charge to get in, for some reason he agreed. Then inside they asked if we'd buy them some drinks, I said 'no, why would I?" and he said "ok". They took their drinks and said "Thanks" and walked away.

two things about this story: 1) he was 100% the chump in this scenario. afterwards he said "I don't know why i did that". and 2) these two adult women left home without $1 between them, fully expecting they could find someone to fund their evening.

the entitlement that women are accustomed to is just unreal.

[–]Alarming-Abrocoma625 -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's not their entitlement that's the issue, it's the simps who encourage this kind of treatment.
