Yea my retainer was 7,500 and when I was just 11 months in it’s was up to 32k. It’s a scam but we need attorneys otherwise is men get shafted.

In the two months before I filed, my ex ran up $60K on our credit cards. After I filed, and in violation of the divorce petition, she drained an additional $17K from our savings account. Then, she retained a pit bull attorney from out of town, who charged her a $15K retainer. Within six months, she had left that first attorney and switched to a local one, but left $21K in unpaid attorney fees. Since she didn’t work, guess who her attorney came after to pay what she owed? Imagine dealing with this crap while trying process the end of a 12 year marriage, and while learning about the divorce process, holding down a full time job, and continuing to parent a young child.

Seems pretty easy to spend $30k on an attorney. There's lawyers that friends of mine have used who require a $25k retainer.

You'll find it out during discovery. My money is on up front attorney fee, because why not.

Same thing happened during my divorce. At the final mediation, she had maxed out all of her credit cards ($30k). I just chalked it up as a lesson learned. Better to be on the hook for half of that now, rather than $100k later when I'm trying to retire.

I am scared now. I am planning to serve divorce notice to my wife but now i am wondering how can I make sure my financial security. We have joint account for mortgage and kid's expenses. My salary is directly going there. My wife's salary was not going there until I have protested for a year and now her salary is going in joint account. I am confuse about how to prevent the financial loses like yours.
