Speaking of art... this reminds me of Pierre Brassau (real name Peter), a chimpanzee who had critics drooling over his work.

I'm looking for it but in excerpt from this article itself would have talking about how someone submitted the paper to one of these journals talking about how privileged students should be forced to sit on the floor and not be allowed to speaking class and to be forced to wear chains. And they were criticized because the owners of the journal felt that it wasn't harsh enough

This is an example of how liberalism has turned into Nazism. It always starts as I fight for those that feel oppressed and ends with death camps

Which one is it?

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points22 points 7 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

"FMK TYPESET.pdf", "Our Struggle Is My Struggle: Solidarity Feminism as an Intersectional Reply to Neoliberal and Choice Feminism"

[–]empathica1 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

Is it? I thought that the one entitled patriarchy, which was him talking about his life in Iowa including him getting really guarded around the only male teacher, and ended in MK was more likely to be mein kampf in disguise.

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points23 points 7 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

FMK => Feminist Mein Kampf

"My Struggle" => Mein Kampf

[–]empathica1 -1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

That one may be a fake article, but it actually is a commentary on contemporary intellectual feminist ideas, which is why it might pass through peer review. They did such a good job making their fake article that it arguably ended up being a real article.

The one I pointed out is obviously mein kampf's anti-jewish passages with new buzzwords. If that passed through peer review, I'd be shocked and appalled, not so much with the one you pointed out. Other than the title it bares no resemblance to mein kampf.

[–]Kuato2012 26 points27 points28 points 7 years ago* (13 children) | Copy Link

They didn't just do a find-and-replace word substitution with Mein Kampf. That would be a little too obvious and wouldn't fit with contemporary formatting. The verbiage would also be too sparse for contemporary publication. Also, they had to put in citations of existing work (which is the cherry on top, really... because it shows other douchebags in agreement).

Here's v1ch12 of Mein Kampf. If you want to find a point of reference for their paper, search for the numbered bullet points.

Now compare that to FMK Typeset.pdf, under the section "Eight Steps Toward Renewing Feminist Solidarity." They distilled and reorganized Hitler's bullet points. I'm sure the other sections also mirror Mein Kampf, but here are some fairly direct side-by-side examples:

(1) To win the masses for a national resurrection, no social sacrifice is too great.

  • Hitler

Second, then, in creating solidarity for overcoming oppression, sacrifices will be necessary, and, though we must remain aware of the real and material barriers feminists and others may face that limit their potential for activism, no accessible sacrifice that abnegates neoliberalism should be considered too great.

  • FMK

(3) The nationalization of the broad masses can never be achieved by half-measures, by weakly emphasizing a so-called objective standpoint, but only by a ruthless and fanatically one-sided orientation toward the goal to be achieved.

  • Hitler

Fifth, though change may come in stages, feminism cannot limit itself to half-measures in solidarity or be selfish. These manifest under choice feminism (Ferguson, 2010), for example, by placing emphasis upon a so-called objective standpoint (cf. hooks, 2000, p. 8) or through pursuit of aims that appear feminist but actually support neoliberalism (Rottenberg, 2014, 2017). Though what constitutes justice is itself multifarious and pluralistic, only a single-minded alignment with solidarity for effecting the goal of justice will suffice (cf. Hirschmann, 2010; hooks, 2000; Patel, 2011; Russell & Bohan, 2016).

  • FMK

That is to say, a people cannot be made 'national' in the sense understood by our present-day bourgeoisie, meaning with so and so many limitations, but only nationalistic with the entire vehemence that is inherent in the extreme. Poison is countered only by an antidote, and only the shallowness of a bourgeois mind can regard the middle course as the road to heaven.

  • Hitler

That is to say, under neoliberal approaches, society will not be made feminist in the true sense (Rottenberg, 2014; pace Snyder-Hall, 2010) but only feministic with many limitations. This is the state in which we now find ourselves. Neoliberal oppression can only be countered by an effective antidote to neoliberalism which Rottenberg demonstrated that neoliberal feminism cannot provide. Only the blinkering of privilege (cf. DiAngelo, 2011; Dotson, 2014) could underestimate the need for solidarity and regard choice feminism as a workable solution (Rottenberg, 2014, p. 428).

  • FMK

The broad masses of a people consist neither of professors nor of diplomats. The scantiness of the abstract knowledge they possess directs their sentiments more to the world of feeling. That is where their positive or negative attitude lies. It is receptive only to an expression of force in one of these two directions and never to a half-measure hovering between the two.

  • Hitler

Most people are neither scholars nor activists indeed, few even consider themselves feminists (Houvouras & Carter, 2008). As such, they possess little understanding of abstract theoretical knowledge, and this directs their opinions toward the affective, which is where their compassion and frustration lies. In this sense, individuals are receptive to appeals in one direction or the other but never to a nuanced halfway point between the two.

  • FMK

I'm sure there are many others, but there's a quick sampling.

Oh, so some reviewer didn't recognize obscure benign Hitler quotes, so gender studies is debunked? I honestly dont care that they managed to sneak "no social sacrifice is too great" into a journal article. If they managed to sneak "so how should we deal with the male question? Some say we should lock them all up in prison camps and execute them all to rid the world of the male menace once and for all, but we should only try it if other solutions, like exporting our male population as refugees, fail.", I'd be impressed.

"Guy publishes feminist mein kampf" is a sexy headline, but nothing about this article jumps off the page as being seriously messed up. In the article I mentioned, the author talks about how weird it was that the principal of his elementary school was a man in a really offputting way.

[–]None_of_your_Beezwax 7 points8 points9 points 7 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

If you don't find those quotes messed up you don't understand how authoritarianism works. It starts with the negation of the middle road.

obscure benign Hitler quotes

Well there's an expression I've never heard before about Mein Kampf

[–]TibsKirk 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, just glancing through, it's not simply a rewrite that replaces "Jews" with men and "jewish conspiracy" with patriarchy. I was expecting something like that. This seems to just use the structural arrangement of MK to put forth an argument about the solidarity of a diverse movement.

I'm not convinced that it is a truly embarrassing article, but I'd have to read it in detail. It takes a lot of patience when every other word is ridiculous.

The crazy part is how they have been able to introduce academic language into the American lexicon. A lot of the words and theories that are en vogue today, were generally written in the 60's through the 80's, in academic texts and journals that were assuredly not mainstream. I suppose the left knows their constituents desire to seem educated and use big words- even if they don't know what the Hell they are talking about.

[+][deleted] -60 points-59 points-58 points 7 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

Reducing verbal flab and using clear, forthright language is always preferable.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Sometimes reducing flab, being clear and forthright, and unambiguous requires specialized language, especially in situations where the discussion is beyond layperson depth.

[–]LarryKleist711 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I understand the words. It's fluff disguised as academic rigor. That's why it's fucking hilarious when the MSM decides on the Dems Outrage of the Week, they usually sprinkle in a few buzzwords or a talking point. Like clockwork, the left starts parroting what they heard and or read. Exhibit A) The media throwing out the idea that the situation for Kavanaugh is just a "job interview." That was not mentioned at all until it became obvious that his accuser's story was falling a part. So, the MSM pivots to the idea that a judge who is trying to defend his livelihood and reputation, should not be so "unhinged," or "emotional." Especially since it's just a job interview.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Kavanaugh's hearing is not at all a topic I intended to broach. I'm not even sure how it relates to the matter of what you consider inappropriate use of "academic language" by "them".

[–]LarryKleist711 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You said it was a weird way to say use small words, no? The implication being that our complaints are the result of a lack of knowledge and the flowery language confuses us.

I mentioned Kavanaugh, because this clusterfuck as been a shining example of the MSM planting words and talking points, and Dems running with them. Even if the Dems don't know what the fuck it means.

The people who wrote this (excellent) paper are both taking the piss and making a serious point: that the humanities "literature" is so far up its own arse it can see daylight.

But they've done a lot more than just this paper. See also the Dog Park paper in which they posited that "we should train men like we do dogs—to prevent rape culture"; arguing that '“a fat body is a legitimately built body” as a foundation for introducing a category for fat bodybuilding into the sport of professional bodybuilding in Fat Studies; an examination of men using Male preserves to enact dying “macho” masculinities in the context of "Breastaurants"; and "Why don’t straight men tend to masturbate via anal penetration, and what might happen if they did?"[2]

Yes, I know this is Sokal all over again, but it's worth the repetition because clearly the lesson that Sokal provided has been forgotten.

Don't take my word for any of this, go and read the Academic Grievance post in its entirety. It's full-to-the-gunwales not just of evidence of fundamentally flawed theories about men, but the ridiculously low bar that prevails in getting papers published in peer-reviewed journals on gender and sexuality.

[1]

Following recent trends in masculinities research, my study interprets the breastaurant as a type of male preserve that erects a local pastiche hegemony in which these themes gain protected status

[2]

This analysis recognizes potential socially remedial value for encouraging male anal eroticism with sex toys.

The title is technically correct, but it is almost click-bait compared to the level of depth that this team of academics achieved in their criticism of what they call 'grievance studies'.

The portion of this project that has to do with Mein Kampf is relatively small compared to the actual scope of their project and findings.

[–]Kuato2012 10 points11 points12 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I posted this in a child comment below, but here's a sampling for anyone who doesn't want to dig through their paper or Mein Kampf:

Unlike the Sokal hoax, these papers all passed peer review. That should worry everyone.

[–]Aeponix 7 points8 points9 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The funny thing is that Greene isn't even completely wrong, which is why post modernism has been adopted so readily by relatively intelligent people.

All work done by an individual is "tainted" by that individual's biases and experiences. That is why peer review exists, to challenge ideas that may be inaccurate conclusions. And peer reviews, as shown in this series of pranks, are not an infallible process to weed out truth from fiction.

However, what we need to take from this is not that every piece of knowledge we have needs to be questioned. It's that we move forward with a renewed diligence toward detecting individual bias as we always have; we strengthen our efforts in peer reviews to replicate the findings, or show that they can't be replicated.

We must remain self aware, and sensitive to our own biases. That includes feminists who believe men rule the world as a class, and not as individuals.

If I go into an experiment wanting a certain outcome, I will be all the more critical of my methodology should that outcome come to pass. Our goal should be to distill truth, even if it proves our own belief wrong. I would argue that it's even probably better to create an experiment that deliberately aims to prove your bias wrong.

We need to always be questioning and reaffirming everything. We need to be neutral, and not beholden to ideological preconceptions. I need to be willing to create experiments that may prove the earth is flat, or that the wage gap does exist as a consequence of the patriarchy. Only by accepting these outcomes as possibilities can I know that I am being impartial to the outcome, and that it is most accurate.

[–]diydsp 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, the crux here is our cultural presupposition that "what's published is true." In pomo, publishing text is "out there for people to consider" as opposed to dogma.

This obviously clashes with scientific and political interpretations of the written word.

Not that I give grievance studies a pass, though. Despite the basis of their work being essentially art, as part of our social contract, we expect actionable artifacts, philosophical production in return for our attention and support.

In other words, yes, you can spend all day playing guitar, but we're not going to pay you to do it unless your music really speaks to us and these grievance studies academics are failing to perform hits.

Good fun, and makes its point well. But lest the STEMlords just read the headline and depart feeling smug, read on.

I spent a year in a field where postmodernism was the trendy new toy and saw my share of impenetrable bullshit, I stayed away from it.
That doesn't mean it is all rubbish though. Like string theory pomo is ugly, difficult and obscure so there is endless cover for charlatans. But it is a different approach which reveals different insights. Classical physics wasn't going to produce a ToE; and classical western art history, for example, had missed much by its attempt to minimise and ignore the effects of it being produced by a body of scholars notably lacking diversity in class and ethnicity.
Burning half of the pomo books and papers ever published may well improve the world but burning them all would be a huge step backwards. And pomo writings are not the only kind which would benefit from culling.

Here are a couple of comments I liked:

innotecture October 3, 2018 It is a good thing that fake or fraudulent papers are never published by scientists in scientific journals /s: https://retractionwatch.com/

A search of the Quillette site yields 113 results for the term “postmodern” and 2 for the term “replication crisis”.

There are a series of massive, interconnected problems in the world of academic publishing –
predatory journals;
unpaid and unrewarded labour;
reviewers that are either conflicted in, or unsuited to, their roles;
perverse incentives in article selection; and even
research that should be published and is actively suppressed.

It is, however, easier to blame the loopy postmodernists rather than tackle some of the hard structural issues at play here.
.

lemurlover October 3, 2018

Postmodernism “scholarship” is mostly rubbish. I feel entitled to make that judgment because I have a PhD in American Culture Studies, so I suffered through far too many courses which muddied the water of theory in order to make it appear deep (to paraphrase Nietzsche).

However, I don’t think this article proves that academia is in crisis, if that’s its intention. I also have an M.A. in philosophy, and I think it’s safe to say that the vast majority of Anglo-American philosophers rightly regard pomo as obscurantist bunk.

Likewise, I think it’s easy to overestimate the number of social scientists (sociologists, psychologists, political scientists, etc.) who have abandoned rigorous, empirical research in favor of ideological posturing.

Across all disciplines, there are thousands of serious academic journals and dozens (if not hundreds) of “pay to publish” junk journals. It’s not altogether surprising that some have lax standards and will accept nonsensical, jargon-laden submissions for publication.
Sokal performed a valuable service, and these authors should be celebrated for following in his footsteps. Still, it doesn’t follow that all (or most, or perhaps even many) scholars in the humanities and social sciences have abandoned the guiding principles of the Enlightenment.
Quantitative research would be required to accurately assess the scope of the problem.

[–]Onithyr 14 points15 points16 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

The problem with pomo is obviously the lack of rigor. I would compare it to "herbal medicine". The vast majority of "herbal medicine" is complete bunk, but there may be some good remedies among them (even if only by accident). So what you do is test them all and that which works becomes "medicine" and the rest is a salad and some potpori.

The same needs to happen with pomo, problem is the central tenants of pomo reject testability.

[–]EricAllonde[S] 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH THE HORROR

[–]XenoX101 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

There are merits to the ideas, I do agree with them on some level from the existentialist point of view. The problem is it gets pushed so far by ideologues that it becomes a charicature of its own self, drawing conclusions that it has no right to. If I hear 'the patriarchy is to blame' and it is not backed by hard evidence of testosterone and chromosomal differences causing effects that bring about said thing that is blame worthy, then no, I'm not goint to believe it's because of 'the patriarchy'. This is my main issue with the ideology and this case study in the Op perfectly exemplifies it, it is especially post truth in its argumentation. Indeed truth itself is seen as a construct, which in some cases is an abhorrent thing to believe if you think about what kind of horrors could be seen as subjectively good.

[–]antilopes 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Patriarchy isn't about testosterone and chromosomal differences.
Feminists say it was invented by men when women had no power, and since then has been transmitted and enforced by both men and women.
I'm dubious about the idea of men coming up with social organisation alone. I imagine it evolved with input from both sexes. So it isn't about maleness. It is a particular framework for men's and women's roles in society, and is a continuous joint project by men and women.

And yes I agree pomo people can get ridiculously carried away with the idea of everything being relative and there being no absolute truths, it can become a game to knock down any solid truths and focus only on subjectivities. But that is a stage I guess, people do that and find it unsatisfying and silly, then they swing away from it.
Still, pomo is good for analysing situations where there really is a shortage of objective reality.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It is a testament to the strength of postmodernism that con artists would try to coopt it. They only do that with things that work.

[–]Onithyr 11 points12 points13 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Or with things that sound authoritative but are easily faked because they lack any and all rigor.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The original intent of postmodern theory was and remains laudable: to guard against complacency, to constantly question cherished beliefs lest we become intellectually lazy and socially irresponsible. In practice, though, postmodernism has become everything it opposed: a magnet for hucksters, self-promoters and ideologues who want to exact revenge and amass power at the expense of truth.

That’s all I’m saying.

[–]Onithyr 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The road to hell is paved in good intentions. The problem is the methodology. Questioning things is very good, but to do so without rigor or intellectual grounding is as useless as navel-gazing.

(actual) Scientific fields do question everything, but they do so using the scientific method. It is important to note that the whole purpose of the scientific method is to (as much as is possible) eliminate human bias.

The problem with pomo is that its only purpose appears to be as an excuse to reject the ideas of other humans and replace it with one's own personal bias. This naturally lends itself to hucksters.
