From what I've read, this is an extreme version of a fairly typical behavior. You ask a girl out, and she brings a few friends or orders the most expensive items on the menu, to see how generous (read: rich) you are. If you balk at the order, she knows you're not rich enough for daddy's precious little girl.

Edit: this was explained by an expat who lived in China for many years. Not for the US or EU.
