Age of consent here is interesting. I think there are several states in which this would have been legal.

But in Idaho it is not. So she gets to register as a sex offender.

Pretty sure crossing state lines for something like that is a federal offense.

Wait so if my state bans skittles and I drive to the neighbouring state to legally buy skittles it's considered a crime?

[–]TalbotFarwell 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In Maryland, you can’t buy/trade/build a magazine for a firearm that holds more than 10 rounds. But the law says nothing about banning the possession or use of standard-capacity magazines, so 99% of firearm-owning Marylanders drive to PA, VA, DE, or WV to get normal magazines for our firearms instead of the lame gimped versions you find here in MD. It’s such a common practice, most gun shops don’t even bother to carry magazines for sale anymore since the gun shops and the gun show circuit in nearby VA have everything a 2A-loving Marylander might possibly need. A favorite of mine is the Nation’s Gun Show in Chantilly that’s held four times a year, I got standard-capacity mags for my Beretta 92 there.

[–]Octopotamus5000 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yep, that was the technicality the Fed's exploited to charge the GDP porn producers with trafficking. Despite doing nothing wrong in the state they produced the porn in, the actresses that GDP used for the porn scenes were recruited from other states in the US where the distribution model used by GDP required an additional round of legal consents to be signed & filed before the scenes can be distributed online or outside of the USA. So the porn actresses got shitty about the licensing rights because they didn't bother reading their contracts properly and complained they had been "trafficked". The fed's granted them a pussy pass and went after the porn producers, despite the producers not technically having broken any laws in the state they operated in & had been operating in without incident for over a decade.

[–]BiggusDickus- 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was really skeptical when I saw that whole thing. I absolutely believe that the GDP guys were total scum, but they are porn producers, so go figure.

These women knew exactly what they were signing up for. They were consenting adults that agreed to make porn. They signed contracts and got paid for it. Seems like they just regretted their stupid choices.

I didn't catch that she was a teacher. Idaho is a conservative state so it would have been a crime either way. But I think most states make the teacher student thing a crime.

There is another angle here that you may miss from Canada. Idaho is a hot bed for mormonism. There are areas in Idaho where non mormons have a difficult time finding a job. The community is insular where it can be.

So if you are seen as corrupting young mormon boys, the powers that be are not likely to look the other way.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 6 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Idaho, Utah and Colorado also have the largest swinger community in the country.

[–]probablynotapreacher 8 points9 points10 points 6 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

I lived in Idaho and I did not know this. That western spirit is wildly independent. Lots of anti vax folks out there. Plenty of preppers.

Its a fun and weird place.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I lived in Ogden Utah for 8 years while in the military. The swinger community is massive and what's make it even more hilarious is plenty of Mormons and even the high ranking Mormons swing. It blew me away when I discovered just how large the swinger community is out there. They'll host complete "take overs". Take over entire cruises, entire resorts, entire camp ground type deal... The hot springs in Idaho are a huge hot spot for them. Bear lake is, number of warehouses, and bars in SLC are and of course they also do Vegas take overs as well.

[–]Tanzer_Sterben 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I had tons of friends that did. It's very hard to be in the lifestyle as a single male.

[–]kraken9911 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah it's super expensive to get in as single male and you'd better be good looking.

I had a friend that had a job for a while and a new Mormon boss came in, hired all his buddies, and then fired her. She actually was going to court because she said she was facing discrimination because she wasn’t Mormon. Idk what came of it, but she is now working at another place doing the same thing with no issues that I know of.

My experience is that Mormons only like to help their own kind around here. I had a flat tire once at night and I pulled into a lit Mormon church parking lot. I couldn’t get the lug nuts off so I went inside the church for help and they basically turned up their nose at me because I was obviously not one of them. I then called my pastor, who is like my second dad, and he drove the 15 miles to come help me get the lug nuts off. Mormons are all about charity if it helps them and their own personal causes.

[–]converter-bot 14 points15 points16 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

After the hurricane in 2005 the mayor of my texas county fled back to his home in Virginia and by Texas law we had no one who could request Federal aid. So we got none.

All the churches were handing out water and food of some sort.

All the churches except the mormon one. They had 18 wheelers full of supplies and kept it to themselves completely.

Mormons are awesome individually but their "church" is a business and like all corporations exists for profit only when the chips are down.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The Salvation Army are a good bunch and so are the Catholics

[–]dkelly175 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree. I know there are people that would help anyone that needed it, but as a whole it is different.

I had friends that were Mormon in high school and they were fantastic and let me sit with them at lunch because I didn’t have many friends. They then they tried to get me to go with this to their ward after a while and when I declined, the relationship soured a bit. They were still nice to me, but I felt like I was just an outsider to them.

[–]Gnerus 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm not a Mormon myself, but generalizing an entire religion is kinda stupid to me.

[–]dkelly175 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I know that there are some people that are truly caring and want to help anyone and everyone, but most of the people I have encountered in my area are not this way.

I was curious and went to tour a new temple and the people there were very rude and short with me. Maybe it was because I was an outsider and went in MY normal church clothes of jeans and a sweatshirt while everyone else were in suits.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 6 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I was stationed at Hill AFB in Utah for 8 years. Deployed from there as well. Being on base wasn't that bad as far as Mormons went and the surrounding towns weren't bad either. However, further south like the Provo/Orem area... That place is like Mormon Mecca. Insufferable fucking people.

[–]LMayo 7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I am an active Mormon NOT in Utah and I echo these claims. Insufferable flipping people.

[–]2red2carry 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The only Mormons I ever saw where in South Park

[–]goawayion 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Having grown up in the Ogden area and then leaving via the military I usually saw that LDS were the nicest people around. Then I came back to Provo and back to smug people again.

The few devout friends that I have though are a 2nd family to me though to be fair I deployed with two of their sons on different deployments. Even they are snubbed when us "Lost Boys" come around (a few of us that served with them). They were asked to change then just placed in a new ward.

I don't understand their dedication to a church of people who are generally indifferent to smug towards them because they associate with people with tattoos, drink, and smoke. They are the most wonderful people and their spirit is inspiring.

Fuck Utah otherwise.

[–]LMayo 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Well, I'll bet it's not about the church. I mean, for me it's about everything the church teaches. I grew up Mormon in the NorCal area but kinda didn't practice until I was about 17 when I did my own religion searching. I'm kind of a "free-spirit" you could say, so I like things most Mormons dontrand got made fun of a lot in church growing up. I've been backstabbed, thrown into the proverbial garbage, and generally shunned by members of my own church for years, and I resented them a lot.

Even now I still avoid going to my church meetings (COVID-19 means no meetings, so there's that I guess) because I'm afraid of the people, even though I'm in a completely new area I don't know. I still practice and believe Adamantly in my religion, but I just have to remind myself that the church is made up of imperfect people, some of which are total douchebags. I just try not to connect my religion to the church and it's people, two separate entities in my head as strange as it sounds.

Anyway, yeah, screw Utah. Never had a good experience there, or East Idaho for that matter.

[–]goawayion 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I recognize the type. My 2nd family treats the church and religion kind of the same way. I couldn't do it but that's because I've never been able to find the connection they have (not without trying), but they're such good people it breaks my heart how they're ostracized because they helped take care of a bunch of young soldiers. I think it's because they never tried to give us the talks.

When their middle son (my best friend) died the church came back around for support and all. Well, they did for the week leading up to and then the funeral. Some of the members used the time after the burial ceremony but before the wake to try to give us the talks and set up appointments. They did with all but one of us pallbearers (already a member) and then basically cut them off from the emotional support they'd promised, the help distributing his household goods for charity where they weren't kept for sentiment.

Its really hard not to place all the I'll feelings I have for the church on the whole church but I remember our neighbors when I had to wait over 2 weeks for my household goods to arrive and the housing department couldn't really help us. That couple was one of the nicest families I've met and they always said they were kind because they wanted to give the LDS a good name. It's such a strange thing that they qualify that statement by default.

[–]LMayo 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Wow, what a story, man. The sad part is that I can totally see all of that happening without any doubts. Utah Mormons are a real mixed bag. A lot of people treat the church like a club, or like a status symbol. Those who don't are awesome and actually do what the religion teaches. The others... Well, let's just say I try not to get too close to those people because they bring me down.

They tried to teach you, as a pallbearer... After a funeral? Wat. Not even as a missionary would I be that insensitive. All things have their time and place, but some people think numbers are more important. -.-* sorry, man. We're not all crazy. ;)

[–]golfmogul 7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I was raised Mormon and believed and practiced it faithfully for 47 years until I began doing a lot of research which help me realize it was full of shit. I’ve lived more than half my life in Utah, But also several years in Southern California. I’ve been out of the Mormon church now for 2 1/2 years, but I’m still trapped living in Utah to be with my kids due to divorce which locked my kids into living in Utah. I have another eight years here in Utah before I can move away once my kids are adults. It’s very difficult for me to live here with all the triggers that remind me of how my life was stolen from me due to a dishonest cult. I’d give almost anything to live somewhere else, but remaining an active and very involved father is more important to me, so I will do the final eight years here and then never live here again.

The most problematic areas have a low population so I would say that most try to get away.

I spoke to a fishing guide (non mormon) in one of these areas. His wife was a teacher but could not get a job in the local school. They had family land so they weren't moving. Sometimes you are a prisoner to geography.

How about teaching online or tutoring?

[–]probablynotapreacher 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They weren't starving so I am guessing she figured something out. In the last 5 years or so online teaching has exploded as a great option for teachers wanting to work from home.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

lol. yes, corrupting the mormon youth. No sex unless with elders of the community!

[–]MattinglyDineen 7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

I think there are several states in which this would have been legal.

It would've been legal in most states. Only 13 states have 18 as the age of consent.

[–]probablynotapreacher 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

In the other 37 is it full consent at 16? Idaho has a graduated system (which i like). They may have the ages wrong but the idea that we won't be charging two teenagers for doing what teens sometimes do is good. And the idea that we will protect younger kids from weird adults seems good too.

[–]MattinglyDineen 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

In 31 in the AOC is 16. In the other 6 it is 17.

[–]probablynotapreacher 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

And that is straight? Like if a 100 year old wants to get with a 16 year old and has the skills its not a legal issue?

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes, but several have Romeo and Juliet Laws at younger ages, as well as a case to be made for corruption of minors if you're not an adult yet. Essentially, if you or your parents feel you've been forced into, or groomed into, sex with an older person, they can still be charged.

[–]probablynotapreacher 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Grooming is the issue. Of course these kids 'consented.' But how meaningful can that consent be? How many beers and hot tub-skip school parties did she throw to get these kids in the compromising position?

[–]MattinglyDineen 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Yes

[–]Knight_Errant25 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Its 17 in Illinois, where I'm at. Personally, I think it should be 16 to match with driving, or the driving age should be raised to 17 to match the age of consent. But that's my opinion.

[–]MAGA_WALL_E 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Request a jury trial. All you need is one man who remembers being a horny teenager. Make her exhibit A. Will the jury please look at her. Your honor the victim was 16 years old. The defense rest.

I mean in this situation they willfully skipped school...

That’s pretty intentional and signifies forethought.

Age of consent in my state is 17, so whether it's a female teacher and a 16-17 year old male, or reverse it doesnt bother me.

Legal age to drive is 16. So you mean to tell me a 16 year old is "responsible" enough to potentially cause a massive auto vehicular accident, potentially killing me and everyone in my car BUT they arent responsible enough to have sex? That ridiculous.

I dont understand why people always use the reverse example to make people think. Of course it wouldnt bother me if the teacher was male and the student was female. They're still old enough to make adult decisions.

[–]whyareyouaskingmeme 7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

At 16 yes. At 17 definitely. The age of consent in my state is 16. Plus it may be a double standard. But a male victim does not have to worry about getting pregnant. Plus the issue of force is much less likely with a 16 year old male and a 32 year-old female.

[–]Red-Lantern 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oooh we really out here promoting statutory rape

[–]numberthangold 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago* (7 children) | Copy Link

These comments are disgusting. Even if the kid was at the age of consent in his state that doesn't make it okay for a grown adult woman to be grooming and sexually abusing them.

[–]kramatic 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Yeah especially on a sub that likes to pretend that it's conscious of men's issues. Just goes to show how sexist this sub really is

[–]numberthangold 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Exactly... this sub is supposed to be exposing women who do the same exact things as men but normally get away with it, on the rare times they DON'T get away with it. Nobody would be saying "yeah but the age of consent is 16 and it seems like the kids chose to skip school on their own" if this was an adult man abusing female students. At 16 these kids are still very much children and it doesn't matter what the law says about age of consent. They're children who have been groomed and abused by an adult that they thought they could trust. It's also a major issue that young boys are constantly pressured into the idea that an opportunity to have sex with a much older woman is an amazing thing, when in reality they are being groomed, manipulated and sexually abused.

[–]Knight_Errant25 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Actually, a lot of us probably WOULD use th age of consent argument if the sexes were reversed here. I'm not saying it's wrong for women to get a pass on it when men dont. I'm saying it's wrong that men DONT get the free pass to do it when women do.

I dont see how its sexual abuse here. From how it reads, it's perfectly legal for people ages 16-17 to engage in sexual activity with anyone else within 5 years of age, which obviously serves no purpose except as an arbitrary limitation based on nothing but emotions masquerading as "morals". Its clearly not grooming if they're sleeping with an 18-21 year old, and as such.

When I was 16, there was a teacher at my school who was a 24 year old smokeshow. I'd have gladly slept with her if she had come on to me. That's not grooming, that's simple biology.

[–]numberthangold 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Neither men nor women should get a "free pass" to sexually abuse minors.

This woman is 34. Not 18-21. It is grooming because these are kids being manipulated by someone in a position of power over them.

[–]Knight_Errant25 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

They arent considered minors sexually. They are at the age of consent, except the very arbitrary caveat that refuses to acknowledge their free will if they sleep with someone 22 or higher. And the law doesnt say anything about the older persons profession. So the "position of power" argument doesnt really hold water. So how is it grooming again? Would it be grooming if they were 18 and legally allowed to sleep with her, but she were, say, their college professor instead? If yes then how does grooming apply to age? If no, then how does the arbitrary age range make sense?

So what if she was 34. An adult is an adult, legally speaking. As such, this law is not being applied equally, and is therefore unconstitutional.

[–]probablynotapreacher 61 points62 points63 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

When Mormons say seminary they are talking about bible school that prepares them for their two year mission. Its often early in the morning but its not like the seminary that gives you a masters degree and prepares you for vocational preaching.

[–]snuffivxx 7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This is in southeast Idaho which is mainly all LDS. So the seminary is often during school time (they refer to it as release time from school to get away with the whole separation of church and state).

According to the article, while the age of consent is 16/17 it doesn’t allow to the “victim” to consent with someone drastically older (5+/6+ years older), which is the case with with this Mrs. Steele.

yes

[–]53045248437532743874 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

You mean you can legally have sex but you can’t legally record it?

  1. If you're underaged, it's child porn. (Yes minors have been charged with this.)
  2. If you do it without permission, it's a crime as well.

[–]FigSideG 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Yea but if you’re legally allowed to have sex then how is it considered child porn? You’re old enough to engage in the sex but not old enough to record it? Doesn’t make sense.

‘Underaged’ usually means you’re not old enough. So they’re not underaged

[–]53045248437532743874 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yea but if you’re legally allowed to have sex then how is it considered child porn?

They are totally separate. Sex is sex. Photography is photography. The laws surrounding them are entirely different. Under 18 is always child porn. Always, everywhere.

Whereas, age of consent varies wildly around the world, from 12 years old in some places to 21 in others. But that's not really relevant to child porn laws, as they exist under different areas of statutory law. It's hard to find a good analogy since child porn is unique. Truly unique. A poor analogy might be that if you are 15 you can get a job, but you can't open your own bank account. It would seem that if you could get a job you could get a bank account, but no, those are covered under different areas of law. Again not a great analogy. Or you can't legally drink at 18 but you can serve other people alcohol. Totally different areas of law. Again, not a great analogy.

[–]FigSideG 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Ah. I see. Idk. I understand it’s simply the law and they’re separate sections of law but it still doesn’t make sense to me that you can engage in something while a photo or a recording of that act is illegal even though you’re being recorded doing something that you’re legally allowed to do.

I’m by no means trying to make an argument for legalizing child porn or something, I just think it’s an interesting situation legally speaking.

[–]53045248437532743874 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

To add, even for adults, you cannot record sex without the other person being aware and agreeing. That's illegal as well. Sex is a one-on-one thing in the same room (or car or whatever). Child porn can be done remotely, electronically, etc. There are minors who took nude photos of themselves and were prosecuted for making child porn. That's rare but it's happened (usually the authorities won't charge them). Taking pictures of yourself naked, as a minor, is completely illegal.

[–]PixelProne 8 points9 points10 points 6 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

Since this story is based in idaho, its safe to say that this is actually a case of statutory rape, as the teens mentioned are younger than 18, which is the age of consent in that state. Anyone below the age of 18 in idaho cannot legally consent, meaning that not only was she preying on underage kids, she was abusing her power as an authority figure to to it.

[–]PatrioticRebel4 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Nowhere that I found in the article comports to what you are saying. The age of consent is 16 and 17 with an age gape of 5 and 6 years. That is not 18. A 16 year old can legally consent with a 21 year old.

The article also did not mention her occupation, so there was no abuse of power as an authority figure. The kids skipping school to hang out with her is not her being a teacher.

Other than that, she did break the statutory law and should be held accountable.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Bullshit. Legally, no, but there is no actual difference between a 16 year old and an 18 year old. This isn’t predation, it isn’t pedophilia, it’s just mala prohibita.

[–]TheFrameGaming 11 points12 points13 points 6 years ago (34 children) | Copy Link

Dude, when I was 13, my 13 year old gf loved sex. Just because they want it at an age DOES NOT make it acceptable. We have rules in place, because people under 18 are fucking clueless and have no idea how much their actions will impact their lives.

[–][deleted] 35 points36 points37 points 6 years ago (25 children) | Copy Link

And what’s the difference between a 17 year old and an 18 year old? I didn’t wake up on my 18th birthday and suddenly have wisdom and understanding I was lacking the day before

18 is an arbitrary age people came up with, teenagers aren’t clueless about their actions, I wasn’t, and none of my friends were either

The laws rightfully protect children, but all teenagers aren’t at the maturity level of 10 year olds

[–]TheFrameGaming 11 points12 points13 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

No, I agree. I’ve always been aware of my actions. But not everyone is. And by the time you’re 18 you are more developed mentally than 17. It slows down from there and pretty much halts at 26 for most people. 18 is just an average number which seems like a time people can reasonably wait and when people are typically reasonably developed mentally, emotionally, and physically.

It’s just a safer number. That’s why the laws are in place, so arrests aren’t made on arbitrary claims like the judge thinking “I bet she wanted it”

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Arbitrary as fuck... You can kill people legally at that age. But God forbid you drink

[–]TheFrameGaming 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Who can kill? I’m confused by this.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Lol it's called the army.

[–]NugVegas 10 points11 points12 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I knew everything and was the smartest guy in the world at 15. Reality hit at 18 to let me know that I knew absolutely shit. Then the military further reinforced that I knew exactly shit about shit. I'm 43 now and still learning every day. Took care of an old man until his death years ago. He told me that what pisses him off about dying is that he finally feels like he has living life down properly but has to die. He was 82. 18 means nothing. Kids today are 12 but act like 18 year olds did 25 years ago. Damn internet.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The point is the line has to be drawn somewhere. In everyone's loves they know someone who is an exception to a rule. So we say "age of consent is 18, people too young don't know any better and can be victims quite easily"

You'd say v"well what's the difference between 18 and 17?" So the rule gets dropped to 17. Someone else says "my 16 year old is about to drive around adults, why can't they have sex too?" So the agree gets dropped to 16. Someone else says "my child can work at a store at 15 with my permission, why can't they do other things adults can?" So the age is dropped to 15. Someone says, "I allow my 14 year old to babysit and even babysit other's children. They're responsible enough for that, what's wrong with sex?" Then the age gets dropped to 14. Someone then says, well 13 and 14 year old can be in the same grade, sometimes 13 year olds can be in higher grades than even 14 year olds!" So the age is dropped to 13. The point is, there's no easily definable line to draw, so you have to draw the one that protects the most people from harm.

This place says it's 18, some places say it's 17 or even 16. Sometimes it's 16 if no older than 20, none of them are more right than the others.

[–]anonballs 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The arbitrary laws are better than a weird gray area where it’s easier for predators to take advantage of young people.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That’s true for sure, I think it’d be best if these things were looked at on a case by case basis but that’d probably be more hassle than it’s worth

My point was solely that I don’t think these teenagers were taken advantage of by a predator

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

but all teenagers aren’t at the maturity level of 10 year olds

AHHAHA, spoken like a true teenager.

MOST ADULTS have the maturity level of a 10 year old.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

I’m in my 20’s but nice try, the adults you surround yourself with must be idiots if that’s the case

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

I surround myself with the ones that aren't, but don't assume the world is just like my circle of friends.

You're in your 20's but you never had public facing menial, otherwise you wouldn't think "Teenagers for the most part are responsible", when confronted with the reality that is 90% of the population.

[–]Krieger117 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

So you're arguing that most adults have the same maturity level of a 10 year old?

So should we lower the age of consent to 10? If a 10 year old and an adult (18+) have the same maturity level, then why not treat them the same way?

[–]electricalnoise 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]BiggusDickus- 6 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It is absolutely predatory.

News flash: Not all 16 year olds are emotionally ready for sex, and pressure to participate could absolutely be part of what went on here. Older people pressuring kids into activities that they very well may not be fully prepared for is absolutely exploitation and illegal.

I have a feeling that you would recognize how horrible this is if it was a 34 year old man preying on a 16 year old girl. It is not different because the genders are reversed.

[–]Jman_777[🍰] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Lol I'm 17 and still a literal baby.

[–]Ceshomru 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think that might be kind of the point. At that age you’ll fuck anything even inanimate objects. So an older person could take advantage of that fact. This may have been harmless intimacy but she could have gone further and tried to get pregnant or convince him to quit school, leave the country etc. As a young man there might not be much he wouldnt do to keep getting sex.

[–]Cgn38 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But if he was in Montana or Texas it is all different because 17 is legal. Or the 38 states where 16 is legal.

16 is the age of consent in 31 states.

[–]BiggusDickus- 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

But these states make exceptions if the adult partner was in a position of trust/authority, like a coach, teacher, or religious leader. Also, many (most?) also put an upper age limit on the older partner, too. Like in Idaho, the age of consent is 16 as long as the older partner is not more than 5 years older.

[–]clamsmasher 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Age of consent in Idaho is 18, not 16 like you claim. Some states have rules about age differences between children having sex with each other, like Idaho, but age of consent is an absolute rule. You are either old enough to have sex with anyone your age or older, or you're not.

The exception to position of power isn't an exception to age of consent. Captors can't have sex with their prisoners for the same reason, but it doesn't have anything to do with age if consent.

The age of consent is 16 in the state. How are they not able not be "willing"?

[–]LeakyThoughts 55 points56 points57 points 6 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

I mean.. it's super fucked up

But iv never heard of an age of consent that has an age limit in the clause

Surely that kind of goes against what the age of consent is for

The age of consent is to say 'yes, you are old enough to make choices by yourself', to then say 'but you can't sleep with someone 5 years older or more' is a bit like 'you can make your choices.. but.. not really'

I assume this is a rule to combat predatory behaviour?

Does that law have an upper limit? Like.. if a 25 year old has sex with a 40 year old, doesn't that break the same rules?

Genuinely just interested, as iv never seen that before

[–]tiredoorcan 26 points27 points28 points 6 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

No, so the point is that if a girl is 16 and her boyfriend is 21 they can have sex and it's considered fine, because they're close enough in age groups to where it's not necessarily assumed that they can't have a healthy relationship. It's more to avoid older men grooming young girls, or vice versa. It's similar to the Romeo and Juliet clause they brought up in that shitty transformers movie. Edit : 25 is over 18 so these rules no longer apply.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The Romeo and Juliet law proscribed lesser penalties for heterosexuals than homosexuals convicted of similar age of consent related offenses.

[–]LeakyThoughts 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Nice, that makes sense

It's a good law actually, is that in effect in lots of countries?

[–]tiredoorcan 7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Erm I'm not sure. The only reason I know about consent law was because when I was in secondary I had a girlfriend that was a year younger than me, making me 16 when she was 15. Naturally being a paranoid person I googled the fuck out of consent law coz I didn't trust her not to falsely report me after an argument. Thankfully she never did but yeah.

[–]LeakyThoughts 15 points16 points17 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

[–]Jswag77 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I’m pretty sure this only applies if they were dating when they were both under 18, and then one turns 18 first.

[–]tiredoorcan 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't get the point then, so somebody who was with a 12 year old when they're 17 can legally be with a 13 year old as long as they were together before the person turned 18? I thought this was to protect older teenagers from being groomed into innapropriate relationships. Being 5 years from 16-17 puts you around college age, where you're mostly still not really an adult as well as your peer group being generally younger resulting in higher likelyhood of sex between the two being innocent, whereas a middle aged, established woman or man have many other facilities and peer groups to associate with and find potential suitable lovers closer to their social standing, which is more generally acceptable. So the train of through goes that if you at that point have sex with minors its because you wanted to fuck a minor, and no other reasoning that could be explained through romantic feelings, even if you do have them, you are in a position to deal with them in an acceptable way. Also if the law didn't apply in this situation the article wouldn't state that the law was considered and waved because of the 5 year difference, implying that if she was 20 the sex would be legal.

[–]Ingramistheman 10 points11 points12 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That’s what I’d always heard of it as, 18 is the “true” age of consent but there are lower ages at 16 to prevent situations where two teens are dating and sexually active, but then one happens to turn 18 earlier. Rather than treat him/her as a predator, they put in the buffer zone of a few years so that they can continue their relationship as normal. They’re called Romeo and Juliet laws

It’s basically that the age of consent is lowered in special cases to accommodate teen romance, but the gap is in place to make sure it’s just that and not enabling and protecting predators. A 22yr old shouldn’t be with a 16yr old. But after 18 pretty much anything goes; there is no “upper limit” because the thought is that you’re an adult and therefore can make those decisions yourself. Doesn’t mean a 30yr old isn’t still predatory/creepy for going after someone that young, but legally it’s not punishable.

[–]170505170505 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

If you’re under 18, there is a limit on age difference. If you’re over 18 the difference between age doesn’t matter

[–]LeakyThoughts 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That makes perfect sense, and is a sensible law when you think about it

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The age of consent ranges from 12 to 18, the most common age of consent is 16. It differs from state to state. At 18 there is no limit or restrictions. There exist several federal statutes related to protecting minors from sexual predators, but none of them imposes an age limit on sexual acts.

[–]Cybralisk 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No if you are under the age of consent there is a limit on age difference and very few states have the age of consent at 18.

[–]CyberMunkii 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

[–]trevorw14 9 points10 points11 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I believe it’s considered statutory rape if the person is underage, even if the younger person is consenting. Which, technically, they legally can’t because they are underage. Thus, rape.

[–]oodjee 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Man, it's all pretty nonsense in my opinion since there's no global agreement on the age of consent. It varies by country and even by state. Rape in one state, drive a 100 miles to the next state and you're fine. The law gives you the ability to drive a car (an activity that causes thousands of deaths per year) at 16, and the same law prohibits your ability to explore your own sexuality with someone abit older for 2 more years. Even though kids probably start watching porn by the time they're 13 years old and masturbating. It all just seems so arbitrary.. Anyway, just my own couple of cents.

Edit. Word

Edit 2: to clarify, I obviously an not saying there shouldn't be any laws regarding sexual consent, but simply that (ironically) there's no consent among the lawmakers. So it all feels made up and often seems to lack any common sense.

[–]Kidel_Spro 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You guys are giving her a pass, because the boys got to cum, but she's basically using them for sex without having to buy batteries, and doing it when it's convenient for her.

[–]butter14[🍰] 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I see lots of people trying to dismiss these charges because the boys "wanted it" and because she was pretty. Just wonder if they would be saying the same if it was a 30+ year old balding male.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That would be gay sex, I don't think these boys were playing on that team.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

[–]SwinginPastMyKnees_ 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I don't get it. What compels a very attractive woman to go after underage boys?

Given her looks, she could easily have an affair with attractive / wealthy men college-aged or above.

[–]lethalmanhole 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Maybe the people she could go after know to avoid her craziness but the teenage boy doesn't know or care yet?

“.. in July 2019, Steele’s ex-husband contacted deputies about the allegations again. He had been present during the April 2018 interview and said he knew a lot about the alleged sexual activities. He said Steele admitted to engaging in sex with the underage boys but in the earlier interview, he was more concerned about saving their marriage than telling investigators the truth.”

Ouch

“(The victim) told me he knew several of his friends had sex with her too but didn’t know anyone else besides (the second victim) had been under 18,” a deputy wrote in his report.”

16 is the age of consent in a large portion of the world. I wouldn’t say she’s a rapist or predator, but she knew what the law in her state was and she chose to break it.

I at least hope the law is held up equally, but she’ll obviously get off easy. Moral dilemma for me, when I was 16, I totally would have tried to fuck her if I knew she’d be down for it.

[–]Deathma5ter187 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

For everyone who is confused about this. Age of consent does not apply to people in a position of power over a minor like a boss or in this case a teacher.

[–]Scumbeard 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Which is pretty dumb because it assumes that power difference == predatory. While also assuming those with less power wouldn't find a higher-up attractive.

Almost every former high schooler boy I've known has had at least 1 teacher they wouldn't have minded banging.

[–]SsoulBlade 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Why is it referred to as having sex when the article states the victims could not consent and thus be labeled statutory rape?

[–]Gravix-Gotcha 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I get why this is here. I know how a man would be treated in the same situation, but I feel like 16 and 17 year old guys and girls should be able to make that decision.

If a 17 year old, who can literally go overseas and die for our country in a matter of months, says he had sex with a woman and it was consensual, it shouldn't be a crime. And yes, I'd stand by that statement with my daughters as well. As long as I truly believed it was consensual.

Unpopular opinion, but it's how I feel

[–]milkmilklemonaid7778 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Scumbeard 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think this is pretty interesting. Right now we say minors are unable to give consent, but are allowed to fuck eachother without recourse. By that implication they are in fact giving consent. Or else the state believes our youth are unknowingly raping and being raped at the same time......and are doing nothing about it.

We now have schrodinger's consent.....until we know the age of the parties involved......it is considered both consensual and not.

The argument that consent laws are there to stop predatory behavior does not follow. The OC example is a pretty clear cut case of a horny teen trying to get some. The burden of proof of predatory behavior is more than just "he/she was over 18 ergo sexual predator".

A lot of people heralding the kids in the facebook and twitter comments as being lucky because the bitch was "attractive". People don't seem to understand the concept that boys take substantially longer to mentally mature than woman do.

Many of the most fucked up and deranged male friends I've encountered in their 30s were dudes who had sex when they were very young with older woman. One thing to have sex with someone your own age when you're young, and completely different to be manipulated into sex with an authority figure like this cunt.
