Alan Turing was who I thought of as soon as I read your post title as well, haha. Near Olympic level athlete, mathematical cryptographic genius, national hero, what's not to love? I'm also big on Eugene Debs.

I do generally agree with the notion that hero worship is unhealthy and unrealistic, but there's a difference between following somebody's example and wholly endorsing everything they've ever done as an individual.

Albert Göring (hated Nazis, used his position as Hermann's brother to oppose Nazism publicly)

I don't admire people. I admire qualities in people. I think trying to find real-life male heroes is a folly and will only lead to disappointment since no one is perfect. There's a reason why "never meet your hero" is a saying.

I admire a lot of men throughout history but wouldn't call any of them heroes. Benjamin Franklin was a great scientist but also owned slaves. MLK was a great activist but was also unfaithful to his wife. Heroes are for comic books, not history books.

Audie Murphy was pretty incredible, the most decorated soldier of WWII he was given just about every major medal the US and French army had. He tried to enlist in the US Marines following the attack on Pearl Harbor but was rejected for being too short at 5'5" and underweight.

He fought in the European theater and was known for several absolutely insane acts of heroics. He got the Medal of Honor for holding off an entire platoon of German soldiers by himself using a mounted machine gun on a burning vehicle, which allowed his own platoon to retreat safely. He was wounded and finally forced to withdraw only when he ran out of ammunition, but then organized a successful counter-attack and drove off the shell-shocked Germans.

After the war he became a successful author and Hollywood actor, playing himself in his own life story. Died too young in a plane crash however and was afflicted by lifelong PTSD.

Teddy Roosevelt. Sickly child to American outdoorsman to American cult hero to American political icon. Was he always good? Nope, he just knew what needed to be done was willing to be the bad guy to insure it got done, an unfortunate trait modern liberals seemed to have lost. They have this high minded ideal but aren't willing to do what needs to be done to see it come to fruition. They act like if a few people don't like them then they've done something wrong but radical change doesn't come without struggle, sacrifice, & a whole lot of strife. If you want to accomplish something great & spectacular you can't do that while trying to please everyone, you have to crack a few eggs & make a few enemies. That's who he was someone willing to do what he believed was right regardless of what people thought of him. No whining, no hand wringing, no baby stepping, just made a plan & followed through.

Men are great. Men have supported men, women, and small fuzzy animals throughout history, just as men and women have been villains. When did we lose that thread? When did women always become heroes, and 'men' always villains? When did it become difficult to identify good people throughout history as male?

Henry George, the great man who continued and revitalized the long line of physiocratic-liberal tradition of advocating for the taxation of land rent (also known as land value tax) that has strangely been forgotten or ignored even by self-proclaimed liberals these days.

His observation of the phenomenon of poverty increasing in affluent areas owing to the increasing land value that disproportionately if not exclusively benefited a select few, namely the landowning class, and that the remedy is to be found in the taxation of land value (BEFORE YOU ASK, NOT IMPROVEMENT) as those landowners did not create those value, is a very important idea that has unfortunately not been taken up in most of the world except a few countries like Denmark, Taiwan, Estonia, and Singapore.

The housing crisis that is so often endemic in much of the affluent world is in my opinion the result of a lack of a land value taxation, which allowed the landowning class nigh monopoly over the unearned value of land and free rein to speculate on land - a huge reason why housing has been so unaffordable.

N.B. Land value tax differ from property tax in that it does not tax improvements on land, but merely the value of the land, which is mainly affected by factors like location, surrounding infrastructures, population, and so on.

So many! Due to gendered roles most things that went down in history were made by men. Great achievements generally imply a high degree of discomfort.

My picks would be

Charles Darwin, a genius if there ever was one. He patiently, obsessively observed life and figured out how it works. The work of that man was so impeccable the Oeigins of Species remains a (the) foundation of biology to this day.

Hadrian, roman emperor who chose peace and bettering the lives of the people rather than war as all others before him. He made sure the next two emperors after him were handpicked wisemen and ushered in the peak of his civilization.

J.R.R Tolkien. A true humanist who hated modernism and loved beauty above all else. His works are pure passion and moral high road. The Lord of the Rings is the greatest, most intricate and deep masterpiece of all litterature. A whol life of dreaming led to it.

Tried to find one alive but can't. It's hard to idealize people while they are still among us I suppose. Especially in the age of Twitter.
