In science there's the concept of false positives vs false negatives. For example if you make your Covid test more sensitive, you may get fewer false negatives but also more false positives. Tuning the test is a matter of trading these off in a sensible way.

A lot of people admit the possibility of false negatives in divorce (so people who should divorce but don't) and say the disadvantage of religious people being more likely to stay married is more of these false negatives.

But that implies the existence of false positives, that is divorces that ultimately made things worse. For example imagine one partner got depressed and thought if they changed things up (divorce) it would fix things. But then it turns out after the divorce they're still depressed, and now also have all the financial and scheduling difficulties that come with divorces. In a parallel universe where they didn't divorce and instead got treated for depression, they ended up much happier.

Do secular people ever consider the possibility of false positives in divorce, or only false negatives?
