My (40M) wife (40F) have always had what I consider a good relationship, but lately things have been really hard, especially on me. I am not great at communicating, especially in writing, so please forgive me if this seems jumbled.

At this point I am staring to think that divorce might be my best option, but I really don’t know.

4 months ago we got in a big fight after one of her family gatherings, and she told me that she doesn’t think that she can keep living like we are, so then I said “are you asking for a divorce”.  She then said those are my words, not hers.  This is confusing to me as I am not sure what else that statement can mean.  We then go home, and life kinda goes on.

2 months ago, we had a similar fight, but this time it was after a gathering with my family (which she hates).  She then says the same thing, and this time I get upset and say (angrily) “I want a divorce”.  Looking back, I clearly should have been more measured, as once you say that it is hard to put back in the bag.  I apologize profusely in the sprit of keeping the peace, and we get things KINDA back on track.

However, ever since then things are not great.  Our sex life, which has been on average 8-9 times a year, has been even worse.  She recoils to my touch, and really won’t talk to me about anything other than our house projects -which is something she cares greatly about.

Things to consider:

  • We have three children, 8, 6, 3.
  • Her family is heavily involved in our lives – and generally it isn’t annoying except for the fact that we bankroll every activity and the family property (probably 15-20K/year) -this annoys me slightly.
  • She is a high earner; I am a moderate earner but handle our investments.  She makes a lot of money, and I then make it grow via real estate investments (I handle the operations) – this partnership has worked well.  We don’t fight about finances.
  • Our sex life is garbage – she had told me she had no interest in sex, but sometime does it to appease me.
  • I have a hot temper, but come down very quickly -this is not good
  • She holds grudges and is very capable to being extremely mean.  Most people don’t know this about her, but her family does, so this isn’t in my head.
  • She is extremely good at manipulating and convincing people of things. She uses this skill to convince me that I am the problem.
  • Her general attitude is positive, I am more skeptical/pessimistic.
  • She is extremely demanding, and claims I don’t do enough – which I would disagree with.  She claims I am not a good partner, but I argue that she doesn’t want a partner, she wants a staff.  I am not going to be a staff.
  • She does a lot of stuff for people.  Friend can’t do taxes? She will take care of it. You need a loan?  Ask her.  Need something moved? She sends me.  Your car is broken – take ours.  your kid need a recommendation to college - she calls in a favor in her network.
  • She does not think rules apply to her – at all.
  • I have a short fuse, and get mad easily.
  • I can be dismissive if her ideas
  • She uses sex as a carrot (do this and I will have sex with you) but then doesn’t follow though.  But I am guilty of saying the same things in reverse – this clearly is not healthy – it shouldn’t be a transaction.
  • She handles all the finances/schedules the kids stuff
  • I do all kid pick up/ drop off
  • I do all grocery shopping – nanny does most cooking
  • The fighting tears me up inside, and she thrives on the fight.

At this point I don’t know what do to?  I am not happy where we are at, but I can’t really tell if I am the total problem -she would say that I am..  If I were to say fuckit, and just become that staff member she is looking for, things would improve.  But that isn’t really what I want.
