I’m in the process of divorce (mediation) so I’m early in the list of “wants” my STBXW will have. Kids are in college so no child support, but likely will be substantial alimony. The one thing I’m fairly certain of is that we’ll have to sell our home to split the equity — she can’t afford it, and it’s much too large for one person to live in. I don’t want it either — too much upkeep. House should sell quickly so this isn’t a concern.

But what do most guys do after the divorce/separation? I’m 50+, and can’t really get my head around moving into an apartment (I’ve owned a home since I was 26). And I also don’t really want to commit to a 12-month lease somewhere b/c I’m not sure where I’d want to end up living. Not even sure I’ll want to stay in the same city, state. I could rent a small house, but even this seems like overkill for only one person. Where are the small-ish homes (~1000-1200 sq ft) for older, single people? And what about furnishing? The idea of having to outfit a new place to live (furniture, pictures on the wall, kitchen stuff, every-little-thing, etc…) is depressing. I can do it, but I really don’t want to — I find no joy in this sort of thing…
