My (32/F) bf (33/M) technically lives two hours away from me, but 95% of the time he stays with me because if he didn’t, it’d be hard for us to spend any quality time together. I have a child who’s in school and I co-parent with his dad, so I'm pretty tied down to this area during the week.

I told myself that I’d never live with a partner before marriage again. I realize that this is an unpopular opinion, but I’ve had two 4-year long relationships during which I lived with my partner and they didn’t work out.

I just think there’s a huge difference between moving in together with a lifelong commitment made at the outset rather than moving in with the typical “try before you buy” mentality. Knowing that you’re both committed to getting through rough times together it is what marriage is about to me (because to me it isn’t a matter of if, but WHEN things get rough, for one reason or another). Besides hard and fast dealbreakers like religious beliefs, whether or not you want kids, etc., I think compatibility is an achievement of a good relationship and not a prerequisite.

That being said, I’m finding myself feeling more and more anxious about us playing house. We’re both happy and I love having him around every day (he's a HVM and is helpful the house, how refreshing) but I worry that this situation will play out like my previous relationships. In my experience, cohabitation just encourages me to provide all the benefits of a wife without any of the commitment, so marriage offers little to no incentive. Men don’t want to buy the cow when they can have the milk for free. I don’t want to be a forever gf, I want to build a family and life together and I’m not getting any younger here.

At the same time, just in terms of sheer logistics I don’t see how we can NOT live together, unless we’re okay only seeing each other on weekends. Further complicating matters is the fact that his love language is quality time, and I know spending weekends together isn’t going to cut it for him and I want to be sensitive to that. Spending time together is so important to him that he currently wakes up everyday at 5 AM to drive an hour and a half to work when he could just stay at his own place and have an easy commute (and save literally hundreds on gas each month!).

We've only been together for 6 months so I seriously doubt he has any plans to get engaged any time soon. I don’t really know what to do. Any advice? What do you think? Is cohabitation a good idea? Am I anxious for no reason?

Edit: Damn, some of y’all ain’t playin lol, thanks for the advice and tough love, I’m not going to let him move in with me!

Edit 2: Please read my comments for more info about his relationship with my son before assuming that I don’t have his best interests in mind. Thanks!
