I became an adult when I was 18 years old.

In my experience, only people who're still young or who're still incredibly immature believe this. You're not magically an adult just because the earth's gone around the sun 18 times since you were born. It's a meaningless, arbitrary age to set adulthood at and actually has no basis in science. The human brain isn't finished developing until ~25 (meaning Florence is still in an underdeveloped stage of human growth) and even then, you can't gloss over the vast differences in lived experiences when dealing with an age gap so large that one party is easily old enough to have fathered the other.

Significant age gaps are gross and predatory, especially when one person is still in their 20s and ESPECIALLY if they're under 25.

I'm really over this noise of "positivity". Just "be positive". Say it enough, in enough contexts the word loses all meaning. Should we always "be positive"? Surely there are cases where we shouldn't? You can keep repeating "be positive" over and over as a means of shutting down a contradictory view without addressing it.

In this case, people are right to be grossed out by this relationship and seeing a person being exploited.

We need to wake up to the fact that "consent" and "healthy balances of power" are not these black-and-white, binary issues. Someone poor, marginalized on their 18th birthday **can** get with a rich, privileged 70 year old. Legally they **can** do that. You can make the exact same legal arguments (earning money, taxes) justifying it. But should they? That's an extreme example, and there are a million levels in between.

At some point we have to start speaking out about unhealthy relationship dynamics, and building the culture we want to have. It's not enough to just observe the less-empowered person defends the relationship. Of course they will, that's part of the entire grooming process.

Being articulate and being mature are completely different things. I was articulate from the age of 10 but I wasn't mature. She just hasn't been seasoned enough, though I'm sure Zach braff is seasoning her as we speak, to know manipulation the way someone like Zack Braff would. I completely get the way Florence thinks it's very typical for a young person to think they know what they can't possibly know. Maturity is when you know that you don't actually know and you guard yourself. Let's hope that she's got a great accountant and a great lawyer to keep Zach's grubby paws off of her assets if not her ass.
