A note on the backup forums

Reddit View
August 6, 2015

Since there were a lot of concerns, I will again clarify our plans on our backup forums.

  • We won't be moving unless we have to.
  • The reservation form is on puerarchy.com but due to demand, the forums will be hosted at our new domain: https://forums.red (Special thanks to donations from /u/-Anteros- and others from the IRC)
  • The backup forums will not be hosted on voat or any other reddit clone. We intend on making a jump once, and only once. It would be irresponsible for us to trade one master for another, and frankly I don't trust anybody with the future of TRP that isn't our mod team.
  • Monitization Policy: Our hope and goal is that the new servers will be entirely supported by donations. We are still considering the best ways to do so, but our plan mostly consists of allowing users to donate or sponsor the boards for some level of recognition within the community. We may also try google ads, but honestly those aren't terribly profitable and we just need enough to run the boards. However, there are a few additional details:
    • We also plan on allowing users to "tip" other users/bloggers to show their support for their contributions. We don't want it to be a 'reddit gold' scenario, but an actual way to send money. We're still trying to find the best way to do so and preserve anonymity.
    • We will never monetize the main forum line up, the order of the posts, featuring posts, or removing posts. These will remain entirely community driven (so long as they meet our content guidelines).
    • If we make so many donations that we get filthy rich, I'm going to buy the mods the best whiskey we can afford. They fucking deserve it.
    • We really do plan on spending it on continued operating costs. If you don't trust us, don't donate. I think the mod team here has demonstrated over the past few years exactly where our hearts are on this matter. If you think this has been for profit, then you've got no idea just how many raw hours each mod has put into keeping this place going. The new forums alone have been a labor of love, and I don't expect to be compensated for the time. (And on that note, if you're wondering why we're re-inventing the wheel with our forums, I'll explain below).
  • The puerarchy reservation forum is not SSL. If you don't like this, you can wait. Our new forums are SSL protected. The database passwords are individually salted and encrypted (one-way-hased). You will be able to reserve your reddit name or make a new name if you choose. Your current reddit username will be protected from being registered by other users if it appears in our archives. (We have currently about 23,588 most active subscribers archived).

So why are we reinventing the wheel on these forums?

First of all, the reddit codebase is open source, and we actually started with that. We found it large, bulky, and too many changes needed to be made to get it where we wanted it.

We had the goal of improving the mod tools, making moderation easier, and making the archiving of our old forums simple. After much deliberation and man hours mucking around with the reddit code and a few different forum scripts, the decision was made to do it from scratch.

We have security as a topmost priority. Which is why we are involving a few different members who work in development making sure that this is secure. We will be rigorously testing the scripts as we develop for any security holes, csrf attacks, injection attacks, and the like. Our database is salted and encrypted. Your security is number one.

We have been hard at work over the past few months making sure this happens so that the future of this community is secure. We do so because the team (myself included) care greatly for the outcome of this community.

Just a few days ago I was chatting with another mod, and it occurred to both of us that TRP wasn't just to share information with others, it was for our own sanity, to find other like minded individuals. I know it's saved my life, and I suspect many share that feeling. So let's continue to do what we do best, and rest assured that we have backups in place, and a lot of work is going on behind the scenes.

Here are some stats:

  • We currently have 252,255 comments archived.
  • We have the top 1,000 posts archived from /r/theredpill, /r/asktrp, /r/redpillwomen, and /r/ThankTRP
  • We have 23,588 of the most active subscribers archived
  • Here are some screenshots of the new forums:

No real comment, just a bravo for the work you and the mod team have done.

With the transparency, organization and structured plans for the future, you guys make the actual reddit management look like a joke.

Bravo, let me know where we can donate to a Whiskey fund.

The first thing I did when I saw that Reddit was doing another round of bans is to check if TRP was on the list. I have been a user at Reddit a long time. I have been using it longer than this account, which I logged into for the first time in a couple of years just to prove the length of time of being around reddit. All of that being said I am getting closer and closer to abandoning this shit site. I use to love the site and it has progressively gotten worse year after year.

If the site attempts to censor TRP I am done with it. Reddit was great in the early days, like a libratarian bastion of free ideas and intellectual discussion. It is now a much more SJW playground than anything it ever represented in the past. The majority of Reddit once supported Ron Paul for fucks sake and now Bernie Sanders? The complete 180 this site has gone through is all said in that right there, Paul to Sanders.

The shift of support from liberty to we only want liberty if you can hold our hands and shield our eyes from the bad things. The old Reddit used to have a system of dealing with content that people didn't want to see, it was DV and never saw the light of day. You would have had to gone out of your way and investigate to find the subreddits that were banned anyway.

The thing that I see coming in the mail now that we have the SJW team determined to rid Reddit of evil is where they will draw the line. I think the line is getting to the point subreddits that simple offend SJWs will be on the chopping block and TRP is offensive to SJW so it's not a matter of if they will decide it to ban it, but when. I know you all are ahead of me on this and that is why the contingency plan. I apologize for the block of text I typed on my phone I just wanted to vent.

Holy crap, that is the first time I logged into that account in around 3 years and it was the account birthday. How ironic...

Reddit was great in the early days, like a libratarian bastion of free ideas and intellectual discussion. It is now a much more SJW playground than anything it ever represented in the past.

Once again proof SJW's and Feminists always have piggyback off something to get their agenda through. Were it not for their slow indoctrination of Reddit they would have had a much harder time spreading their agenda anywhere else. While TRP has no issue with moving its operations when the need arises.

Mann I'm so happy you mentioned the 180 degrees shit flop that turned from ron paul to sanders.

The r3volution continues, but now it's sexual. lol

Six year dailypaul regular over here. 07'-13'

[–]Hatorader0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Are we able to already go to the new site and see the archived post and check who the archived posters are? I'm mostly curious if I'm there and/or who is?

Oh and thank you for doing this, I disagree with a lot of people on TRP, especially you politically correct douchebags. But this place helps me hold on to whatever sanity I have left.

Once you HAVE bitcoins they are one of the easiest ways to transact on the internet (getting them is currently kinda difficult). It blew my mind how great these things are the first time I used them.

No transactions as yet. The good thing about bitcoin is that member can see the total and you can explain where the funds are going to.

[–]TRP Vanguard: "Dark Triad Expert"IllimitableMan17 points18 points  (8 children) | Copy

Really, all transparency does is have people donating based on judgement of your finance rather than gratitude of your service.

For example, if you can't see the donations, but think "TRP really helped, I want to give money to help back" - you'll give money whether $1 or $1,000,000 was made.

If you think "TRP really helped, I want to give money to help back" but you see TRP has made $1,000,000, you're more inclined to go "well TRP doesn't deserve my gratitude, they already have $1,000,000." - but that doesn't change the fact TRP helped you get your shit together, it just makes you less appreciative and more judgemental of it's help.

The transparency is a gratitude killer. I wouldn't give a shit how much TRP made, I'd still want to say thanks because of how much it helped me. But I know not everyone thinks like I do, and many who would have otherwise donated will instead think "ah, well they've got enough." And I think that kind of sucks.

[–]BowlOfCandy2 points3 points  (2 children) | Copy

If women were transparent I don't know if I'd pursue them with any amount of enthusiasm.

[–]TheDialecticParadox1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy

Reminds me if an episode of How I Met Your Mother where Ted can see miniature versions of all the ex's of a girl he's dating climbing all over her and taunting him about being inside of her and him 'tasting them'.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children) | Copy

trp allows you to see right through them.

Maybe you'll become mgtow then?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy

I know what you mean but you have it a bit backwards- we're not fixing problems in the third world or a womans unending request for resources, which will never actually be satisfied, we're pledging money to keep servers running and bandwidth. If /u/redpillschool says we need 1000 dollars for this <insert invoice> then each of us can see how much more money needs to be spend, how much is already spent and we can donate as much as we think we can until the goal is reached.

[–]NakedAndBehindYou0 points1 point  (2 children) | Copy

Donations rarely amount to much in internet operations, except in those few cases where a heartbreaking story goes viral and people donate to help someone in need.

Typically, successful bloggers who report their income often say that donations make up less than 1% of their earnings.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy

True. But here's a little history for you, did you know Ron Paul made over $6m in internet donations in one single day? A world record. The average donation was around $20 iirc.

Salting the passwords isn't enough. A plain concat(salt,SHA1(concat(salt,password))) is still pretty easy to crack in the event of a database compromise because hardware to execute standard hash functions is so fast. What you really want is something like scrypt, something designed to combat large-scale brute force attacks.

[–]Modredpillschool[S] 17 points18 points  (13 children) | Copy

Thanks for the heads up. Luckily the minds coming up with this agreed with you as well.

[–]RPSigmaStigma1 point2 points  (10 children) | Copy

I don't think this guy knows what he's talking about it. Scrypt is a hashing algorithm, so contrasting it to "salting" is a non-starter. So, the argument he makes against "salting the passwords" also apply to scrypt. I.e.,

A plain concat(salt,SHA1(concat(salt,password))) is still pretty easy to crack

Is the same applied to scrypt:

A plain concat(salt, scrypt(concat(salt, password))) is still pretty easy to crack

So the real dilemma isn't between salting vs scrypt, but between scrypt and other hashing functions (like SHA1 in his example, which is kind of a strawman to begin with since SHA1 is a weak hash and hasn't been used for password storage in a long time). And there are serious concerns about scrypt and its viability in password storage. I highly recommend checking out this article on how to properly store passwords.

[–]Modredpillschool[S] 5 points6 points  (6 children) | Copy

The part that we agree with is that SHA1 is not being used. Further, the salts are individualized. I won't go further, except to say, the passwords are being saved in very secure way and more than meets industry standards.

Edit: Upon reading your article, I can say confidently they pass the recommendations of your article no problem.

[–]RPSigmaStigma5 points6 points  (3 children) | Copy

Awesome. Just wanted to make sure you all weren't eschewing salting the passwords on the grounds that scrypt somehow obviated the need for salting.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child) | Copy

How I read this, " Computer computer bacon password bacon computer. "

[–]gotwatcher3412431-1 points0 points  (1 child) | Copy

Your reluctance to disclose how passwords are stored is deeply troubling. Kerckhoffs's principle says that knowing how a properly designed system operates should not compromise its security. Your reluctance to disclose your security measures can only indicate either ignorance or malice, and I hope it's the former.

Your reluctance to disclose your security measures can only indicate either ignorance or malice, and I hope it's the former.

I don't take advice from some rando that I've never seen contribute on this forum. I don't know you, and you certainly haven't built up any sort of credibility to come in here and start calling people ignorant or any sort of name.

The passwords are individually salted, and encrypted. It's an internet forum, not a bank. If you're doing things right then you're not reusing password so there's little risk...

If you're still that paranoid that you really think somebody's going to take the time to try to reverse engineer a salted blowfish encryption with a high algorithmic cost to recover literally zero financial or personal information but instead just a random ass password for an anonymous red pill account, I got news for you, you're not that important. But do us a favor, just don't log in. Easy as that.

Just because I didn't explain it to you doesn't make me ignorant or malicious. And if you really think malice- then think about the fact that unless you've logged into the server itself to inspect the code, anything I tell you could be a lie. I could be harvesting all these sweet sweet passwords so I can control every red pill account on my website. If only there were an easier way for me to do that.

You gotta think twice about who you're calling ignorant. Because what you've just implied here is stupid as fuck.

[–]blacwidonsfw1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy

Very interesting article thansk,

[–]gotwatcher3412431-2 points-1 points  (0 children) | Copy

I doubt you know what you're talking about. scrypt (and its spiritual predecessor, bcrypt) are designed to be very resource-intensive, making brute force infeasible. (It's like PBKDF2.) Obviously, brute-forcing SHA1 is fast because it's a function designed to be fast. While it's possible to compute every possible bcrypt function (it's deterministic, after all), the function is designed to make that computationally infeasible. bcrypt and scrypt have built-in salt.

Your scrypt hit piece was also thoroughly debunked on HN when it was posted.

[–]no_face0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy

A better option is to not send or store the passwords at all, but use SRP which enables both server and client to arrive at a shared secret without ever sending the password over to the server.

There are free libraries to implement this. clipperz.is, the online password storage site uses SRP authentication.

No point taking any chances. We've probably helped more men than every other subreddit combined because we give meaningful and actionable advice. Not platitude-filled bullshit from cucks and women who'll spout nonsense like "just be yourself!"

However, because we have less than favourable views on the nature of women, that makes us a target for the politically correct, insane, culturally marxist time that we live in. TRP is just one huge thought crime to the ministry of love. Shit's doubleplusungood.

[–]HoundDogs9 points10 points  (5 children) | Copy

It's amazing how all the idiots just completely dismiss this place like the people here are some kind of pariah. As if improving yourself and increasing your value to the world is some kind of cult.

[–]TRP Vanguard: "Dark Triad Expert"IllimitableMan19 points20 points  (4 children) | Copy

They don't mind the improvement part, it's the understanding of women's psychology and augmentation of our own they loathe. Women not in control = misogyny. Men in control = oppression. And then there are the well-meant but idiotic egalitarians who think men and women are, or can be equal. There isn't a chance in hell. Sex and superiority/leadership is pretty binary. You're either in a female dominated culture or a male dominated culture. One leads and the other follows. There is no democracy in attraction or gender imperative.

Many redpillers I suspect would love for equality to be feasible, as it would take the load off them. At one time many of us thought it was. But we have found that it isn't, and so have to come to accept reality rather than living in spite of it. The establishment and the masses of brainwashed sheeple are in denial of this truth, and hate us for reminding them of it. TRP owes its rep to the sentiment that the messenger almost always gets shot.

[–]HoundDogs1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy

I'm kind of new here and you worded that in a way that was pretty intriguing. Could you go into more about what you mean by this:

Look at the terrible lives this woman fed culture is. Everybody is lame. Weak. Scared. Full of fear. Cant socialize.

What comes to mind when you think of woman.?

It is fear. Fear itself. She fears the world. Fears the social intricacies. Fears sudden change.

And how do they act to overcome this over powering cloud of fear over their heads? Yelling. Changing subjects of conversation. Crying while helplessly bashing away her fury of powdered fists towards you.

You can not succumb to the fear. The fear of woman. You shall never lower your mind to the impunitive lesser mind.

I'd avoid receiving money for good posts.

Inevitably, it'll force the best posters to create good content in exchange for money. Seems good, but it will kill the natural process of having inspiration and writing good shit.

Percentage of best posters will try to produce posts for money. Forcing, quality will go down. They will shape posts to fit the community. Which is the best way to become self funded circle jerk.

Look at GLO posts. He wrote a few where he is trying to sell his t shirts, which is fine. But this few are artificial and reader can sense it. Forced content, shaped, molded.

His "free" posts on the other hand, are top notch.

Let's rather donate some money to mod team, regardless of their posts.

Patriarchy - a system of society or government in which the father or eldest male is head of the family and descent is traced through the male line.

Puerarchy - The boys who never "manned up" to become patriarchs, are now running the show.

Seriously, read Ian Ironwood's post on it:

It's such a horrible name... Reminds me of puerile.

[–]1rporion1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy

Same roots, and that´s the idea.

[–]Modredpillschool[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy

That's the point- rule by boys. It's about the 'men' who never "grew up" in the feminist context. Peter-pan syndrom is what they call it.

Nevertheless, I've heard your complaints and the forums will be on forums.red

Nothing of value from me, just a simple "Thank you!" to display my gratitude for all the work you and the mods do.

The new forum looks great and I have to admit, that for some time now, a part of me wishes for the removal of the sub by the reddit administration, so everybody can free their minds of ultimately irrelevant issues about what reddit has and will become, and invest their energy in some usefull and top-notch content.

Just a few days ago I was chatting with another mod, and it occurred to both of us that TRP wasn't just to share information with others, it was for our own sanity, to find other like minded individuals. I know it's saved my life, and I suspect many share that feeling.

This especially hits home with me since it is exactly what TRP is to me. Just keep doing what you are doing and the way you are doing it, and many more shall follow and finally find answers and solutions and end their struggle.

[–]watersign1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy

this is a smart move and i suspect reddit will be upset that TRP is gonna migrate.

[–]nubfilter1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy

Developer here, 20+ years experience (15 professionally). Depending on your stack (I'd recommend .NET) I can offer my services. Databases are my specialty, I can review your designs and provide feedback etc. I can help support ALM (requirements, defects, source management, etc).

[–]Lithiumthium1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy

Excellent job.

If anything goes wrong I can open a subforum in a board I manage here in Brasil, no charges, I owe a lot of things to TRP and in case of emergency having you people there would be an honor.

[–]cain_medri1 point2 points  (2 children) | Copy

Why have you opted not to move when it has already become evident by the fact that I have not seen any post from TRP on the front page regardless of if I manually UNSUBSCRIBE everything else so that TRP is my only subscription or not?

It's already clear this area is being censored and is literally one step away from the obscene nonsense happening to other subs. The sheer size of this sub is likely the only thing keeping it in check.

Actually, I'm rather confident you're juggling enough threats from Reddit that we don't need to elaborate on and we all know where most people will be going. The real question is - why even bother with theater? Pack up and move.

[–]2Sepean2 points3 points  (1 child) | Copy

I get many TRP posts on my frontpage, you must have done something with your settings.

[–]cain_medri0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Hmm.. possibly. Let me experiment.

[–]nantucketghost0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

deleted What is this?

[–]HV1230 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy

The end is probably nigh as reddit is moving against subs that "exist to annoy other users" etc.

[–]2IVIaskerade0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

As for the tipping thing, is it possible to implement architecture to support ChangeTip or DogeCoinBot? Bitcoins seem like the perfect way to exchange tips on a digital message board.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children) | Copy

just curious, are you going to archive the top post on the other RP networks?

[–]Modredpillschool[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children) | Copy

We've got asktrp, theredpill, thanktrp, and redpillwomen archived. We'll be grabbing becomeaman, asltrp, and trpgame next.

[–]thisisme00070 points1 point  (2 children) | Copy

Why is marriedredpill left out?

[–]Modredpillschool[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy

I'll grab it, but I'm not the biggest fan of some of the advice over there sometimes.

[–]thisisme00070 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Thanks! They have saved my life in the same way others describe here.

[–]full_package0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

I went on and registered, but it's unlikely RP subs will be banned. Not anytime soon, anyway. If anything, this is what they make quarantining for.

And if you ask me, they should quarantine us. Whoever needs to discover it eventually will do so, and it won't be via a post on front page. Other than that, the less attention we get, the better.

[–]PM_MEYourFavBodyPart0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy

Maybe I missed it from the screenshots, but is there any chance of incorporating the Reddit Enhancement Suite features?

[–]Modredpillschool[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy

Yeah I plan on making the interface basically as easy to use without any browser extensions.

[–]everythingisthrown0 points1 point  (3 children) | Copy

Is there a professional team working on this? If not I'd like to help, I'm still a student but I'd like to help where I can.

[–]Modredpillschool[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child) | Copy

I'll be sure to take you up on the offer. There is a pretty dedicated team at the moment.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Ditto. I just graduated in CS, so no experience, but I've worked with databases, web design, cryptography and data security, etc.

[–]JablesRadio0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Just a thanks. The Reddit team could learn a few things from the mods, here.

[–]lnvader0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy

Integrate bitcoin tips and payments please :)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Much easier said than done

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Thanks mods for all the work. TRP has changed my life radically and helped me to wake up and see things as they really are. Looking forward to the new forums without reddit breathing down our necks.

[–]pnw_diver0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Props for work and dedication.

[–]no_face0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Bitcoin is perfect for payments/micropayments

[–]CptDefB0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

I'd like to make a request!

Themes, specifically because I use night mode in RES, and would love my TRP viewing to remain mostly the same. I'm one of those people: the original layout is okay, but if I can have black/white, I'll take it.

As it's an aesthetic request, I don't expect it to be too high on the list, but if it can be banged out quickly or got to eventually, that'd be dope.

Thanks, not for the themes, but for this space and the vigilance to go with.

Yes, there will be a mobile interface.

[–]mwandazimu0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Do you guys require any help with the coding/server aspect of things? I wouldn't mind contributing in any way possible. I've worked on open source projects before and would like to help.

[–]Totsean-1 points0 points  (2 children) | Copy

Is it okay if I start an offshoot of TRP, minus the forum and just focused on making the information presentable and easier to read for others?

I have a forum in place but I wouldn't want to risk things consider how touchy TRP subject matters are, however I am dedicated enough to launch a platform that will work in conjunction with TRP.

If it's alright with everyone.

Oh here it is btw

Sorry for not consulting beforehand, I was just planning on doing this for months.

[–]Modredpillschool[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy

Anybody is free to start a site if they wish. However, I have some interesting plans coming up with our network, if you wanted to put some time in we will be needing volunteers.

[–]Totsean0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Sure, but this isn't just some site, I can cover a small sub-section, at the moment what I see is a basically a lot information but little organization. I plan to fix that via that outlet. It's an experiment, I will give it a year and then see if it works.

Obviously it will run ad free, since I can cover the expenses myself.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
