It's interesting that the author conflates "responsibility and self-sufficiency" with "marriage and fatherhood". All those people who aren't getting married aren't all mooching off their parents. A lot of us have careers that involve responsibility and self-sufficiency, but the incentives for taking on head-of-the-household roles are non-existent.

The author seems to think that men ought to fall on their swords and get married as an act of altruism for the greater good of society, but this is clearly a problem of incentives. If men marrying and starting families is in the best interest of society, then society needs to incentivize that behaviour for men. At present, sure there are some tax breaks and inheritence laws, but the dis-incentives and risks simply overwhelm all else.

Back in 2012 when I was 21, a guy I worked with told me about how he had to pay alimony to his wife damn near for the rest of his life. The guy didn't even make that much and hour btw. I didn't know what alimony was until he explained it to me. I kid you not, the guy must have thought I was retarded because I had him explain it to me like 3-4 times because I couldn't fathom how if you broke up with a chick, not only is the pain and heart ache of a failed marriage not enough, but you have to possibly pay her court fees, lawyer fees and have to pay her a montly wage for the rest of however fucking long while she sits on her ass and not do shit?!! Don't even have a kid with her but you still get fucked?!

I grew up watching my mother fuck over my father for child support and that made me not want to have kids or get married but this alimony shit....that was the final nail in the coffin in any potential decision of me getting hitched.

The economy sucks. Im 32, my whole life has been...start a career with a company and a year down the line get a layoff. Move to another company, get layed off. Go to school, get a degree, cant find work. Fight for survival, get a job in a completely different career field, and start all over. Most guys i know have been through a serious struggle to establish their career. Maybe even switched careers a few times. I dont make excuses. The hard path in life has made me a better man. But when you finally find sucess, you dont just want to hand it over to the type of women that society produces today.

Ive never had a problem banging women. My problem has been, finding one worth a real relationship. I think most guys that finally make it in life will agree that after a life of risk, ups, and downs...marraige with a modern woman is just too big of a risk. Most sucessfull men i know in their 30s, avoid marraige. Every man i know that is married and in their 50s and up says, "the young ladies today do not have what it takes".

It's the same issue that has been happening in Japan for the last 20 or so years.

Women prefer to date-up en masse. We can debate whether that is "natural" behavior or societally imposed until armageddon but the fact remains that in numerous cultures all across the world women consistently seek to date up, with many preferring to be alone rather than attached to someone of lower income/status.

What I find interesting is that most of the mainstream articles and publications about this marriage issue seem to gloss over it.

When a woman is encouraged to pursue a career from a young age they spend a lot of their prime fertility bogged down climbing the corporate ladder or working on a small business. This much is well understood and indeed common knowledge.

What apparently is not commonly understood or intentionally ignored, is that by climbing the corporate ladder and becoming career oriented women also significantly reduce the size of their dating pool. As most women prefer to date up, so to are most men not particularly comfortable with being with a women who is of significantly higher status/income than them. Even if they were, a 30 year old career woman just simply isn't as appealing as a 22 year old Barista. The idea of the "power couple" like in House of Cards or other major television/movies is literally the 1% of couples, it's notable precisely because it is so uncommon.

I've felt for a long time that we're living in what is likely the beginning of the end of "western civilization", and I suspect these trends to get worse before they get better - but I'm very interested to hear what others think on the matter.

I was in an uber the other day and I was talking to the driver about starting small businesses and being in control of your own destiny.

Unfortunately this is a skewed statistic. Most men get married after the age of 30 nowadays. So it is pointless to say that 70% of men below that age are unmarried.

I don't support marriage, but these statistics do not prove that men are walking away in droves.

What would be interesting is seeing how many men ages 30 - 40 have never been married.

When I opened this article, a little pop up claiming to "neuter the liberal media" popped up, so I'm assuming the article and the site are trash (made all the more clear by citing American Sniper as a source) but I'm going to respond reasonably anyway because I'm bored.

I believe this to be backwards. Fatherhood and marriage are associated with responsibility and self-sufficiency, not the other way around. If the author was upset about men not being self-sufficient or responsible, the article would in be written about that, not about marriage and children.

Anyway, this article reminds me of a lot of discussion I've read on /childfree about why so many young adults, not just men, reject the "white picket fence life", as I like to call it.

Fundamentally, it's a matter of money. Young American men (and women, although that's outside the scope of this article and subreddit) are, generally, heavily indebted and taxing their credit with college loans and are in no place to purchase a three bedroom in the suburbs, a minivan, and brats to fill them with.

This mode American man potentially grew up watching his father possibly lose his investments over the tech bubble burst, his job over the recession, and his house in the housing market burst, giving a perception of heavy spending and settling down as financially unwise. He also potentially watched his father get raked over the coals in divorce court. And lets not forget the study that found raising a child to the age of 18 costs 250K USD minimum before college, and it becomes obvious why most people aren't entering into this lifestyle: they can't afford it.

In an article on Japanese herbivore men, a businessman said the trend was worrisome because the herbs didn't spend nearly as much money as their fathers, preferring to live frugally and save for hard times they believed would certainly come.

I don't believe this is a sign of some deep social "cancer", as much as I'd love to go on a diatribe about those whose politics I disagree with, but simple cause and effect.

We'll see the trend reversing in the next ten to twenty years as kids growing up in a less precarious situation resume the conspicuous consumerism and political conservationism of their grandparents.
