Do y’all wear cologne?

Reddit View
May 11, 2020

Simple question but I’m curious. I’ve never worn cologne although most of my friends wear it to parties (I’m in college). It just seems way too expensive imo but maybe it’s worth it. What do y’all think?

Yes dude... Women notice.

I will literally have friends' wives, sisters, mother's, etc. comment "woah you smell so good". All women love a man who wears cologne.

Doesn't have to be fancy and certainly not expensive. Just go for something pleasant but not overpowering. I wear Polo Red and Acqui De Gio. Definitely musk up for work, any formal occasion, 'party' or pretty much any social gathering of any kind where women will be present. They will remember you if they catch your scent.

All women love a man who wears cologne.

Ok, time for a fucked up field report.

I was over a girl I was dating's house. She had a big family with 2 brothers and a sister. The sister was wrapping a present she got for her current boyfriend. He was an alright dude but kind of quiet. My girl asks the sister what cologne she got the new boyfriend.

She responds "Acqua di Gio"

My girl asks her sister, "Wait, isn't that what Dominic wore?"

"Yeah, but I love the smell."

My girl responds, "That's fucked up. You can't give your current boyfriend a cologne your ex used to wear."

The kicker was, the Ex? He was never a 'boyfriend', just a dude that alpha-widowed the sister. He used to call her up, she'd come running and fuck him, then she'd get sent home duty done. She asked for a commitment all the time and why did she finally break up with him? She didn't. He got into an LTR with another chick he'd been banging.

This girl was literally giving the beta dude she was dating the same smell the dude who kept her as a side piece because of the feelings it evoked in her.

LPT: Be the dude who's scent she tries to remember, not the dude who's scent she tries to replace.

To think that the current bf still wouldn't have realized...

I have a similar story. My neighbor gave me a bottle of cologne that he didn’t like. I had a spare bottle of Curve so I gave him that as a repayment. Next time I saw him he told me that his wife jumped his bones because he smelled like her ex from high school.

+1 on both of those. Dior Homme is great too but a little bit sweeter

[–]Marteko31112 points3 points  (3 children) | Copy

Dior Homme is a masterpiece but for the non-fragrance guys: only wear it formally/suit

[–]eire1880 points1 point  (2 children) | Copy

Fully agree, working in a pharmacy means I’ve to wear a suit most days so it fits that situation. Polo Red is better for casual everyday use.

[–]Marteko31113 points4 points  (1 child) | Copy

I wish I could wear a suit all day and use DH to its fullest potential (still in college)

[–]eire1884 points5 points  (0 children) | Copy

It really stops being fun after a few weeks trust me, I’m still at college as well, getting straight to work from class and changing into a suit sucks haha

Everyone is recommending different things I don’t know what to get lol

[–]OneExplorer10 points11 points  (0 children) | Copy

Write down the names of the colognes and go to sephora or ulta and try them out.

[–]_Icarus_Reborn_1 point2 points  (5 children) | Copy

They'll all react differently to your skin, what works for one person won't work for another.

Also, some guys saying go for lower brand/cheap colognes, I'd consider going the other way. Yes they can be pricey, but some things you shouldn't cheap out on.

Not sure where you are OP, But go to a department store where they have sell cologne, and get smelling. Also this is always a good place to practice talking to women, as these places tend to have attractive women working there. In the UK we have House of Frasier or Debenhams.

Ask them for advice. Look up how cologne works. You have high, middle and bass smells.

Find one you like. Wear it sparingly. Find another and add to the collection.

I've got about 3 different ones I wear. Depending on time of day or event.

[–]throwaway210013[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy

Thanks for the response

If there’s a really nice cologne though wouldn’t it smell nice on everyone? Or am I downplaying how much your natural scent affects things?

[–]_Icarus_Reborn_0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Have a read of this, it talks about perfume, but it still carries over for men.

The best bet is to go to a store, and just smell them using the testers. Not sure where you're located, but there tends to be little cards you can spray them on an smell them.

Find one you like the smell of, then spray it on you. 2 to 3 squirts around your neck, from about 15cm away.

Make sure your doing this one at a time/different days, as you'll just smell like a perfume shop and won't be able to judge it on its own merit.

Make sure you've showered, clean clothes and your normal hygiene routine is on point. So you have a base to measure against. This will also help when it's a normal part of your routine.

Once you leave the store just try to be aware of the smell and smell it through the day, it'll get on your collar, so pull it up to your nose to smell it that way too.

Rinse and repeat until you find a couple you like.

I have a daily driver for work, Paul Smith Extreme, its decent and at price I don't mind replacing often.

Date night/other events is Viktor Rolf Spice Bomb. Deep, woody/spicy and masculine.

And there you go. Once I started upping my dress game, this was one of the best decisions I made. Did a fair bit of reading into it, just like anything, you should do your research. Definitely goes along way and women will always say a good smelling man is a turn on.

Hope that helps and let me know if you need anything else.

[–]MikeLittner0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy

Do you have one for daily work wear ? Also from UK, do you also like Zara’s collection

[–]_Icarus_Reborn_1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy

Yeah, daily driver is Paul Smith Extreme. Sharp and clean smelling.

Evening/date night is Viktor Rolf Spice Bomb. Deep woody and spice to it. My girl loves it and it definitely gets her going.

Used to love Paul Smith London until they stopped that. Another good one is Paco Rabanne Invictus, but that's not in my rotation atm.

I've never tried the Zara ones, I'll have a nose once lockdown is over.

Go for Acqua di Parma. Italian style at its' finest.

No matter what you choose from them, you score big. You can either go with the cologne in the traditional way like Colonia, Essenza, Colonia Intensa or Colonia Assoluta or you can try to aim for the finest in their range which is a fragrance that centers around a single note like sandalwood, leather, amber - Sandalo, Leather, Ambra

The Leather one smells like money, wealth, opulence. No matter what place you step in, you step there like you own that motherfukin joint.

Just imagine Conor McGregor with his cocky walk. That's how you walk when you spray Leather

[–]EnemyAsmodeus0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

I switch between Polo Red and Yves Saint Laurent, though the Polo Red is so much stronger, I still get compliments on YSL instead... Is that weird?

[–]Kabuki43138 points39 points  (11 children) | Copy

A good cologne should last pretty long and doesnt cost much annually.

Stick to 3 and that has become my identity. Women will notice and some will make a move to come closer and sniff you.

[–]Yourlocal_priest15 points16 points  (7 children) | Copy

Please shar your top 3 , mine are

Versace "por homme" , YSL "Y" and

Jimmy choo but i forgot the name.

All 3 for separate occasions.

Spice Bomb/Valentino Uomo (the former sharper, the latter powdery)

Mugler Pure Malt (slight sweet yet woody smell)

Polo Red Intense (smells like a great summer red wine)

Favourite cheapy: John Varvatos dark rebel (boozy leathery rum, good as a wild night out scent)

[–]Yourlocal_priest0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy

How old are you , if I may ask.

Bc woody , leathery smells are for elder men , i use fruits and high type of scents , like ear de perfum and ear de colon.

[–]lpfield7 points8 points  (5 children) | Copy

La Nuit Homme (can’t remember the exact name) smells exactly like Aventus, has further scent projection, longevity, and is only $20-30. FragranceNet is clutch.

[–]Monkitail4 points5 points  (3 children) | Copy

is fragrance net legit, they are so cheap sometimes I wonder if they sell fake shit. like ebay and amazon are both shit

[–]lpfield0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Real deal. I’ve bought from them for years

[–]D4rkr4in0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy

it's gray market, basically they can get those prices because those colognes are sold for much cheaper in certain countries.

Definitely legit though, I grabbed Mont Blanc Legend Night and Hermes TdH from fragrance net and it has worked very well if you know what I mean ;)

[–]OpenParr5 points6 points  (1 child) | Copy

Second this. Wait 30 minutes after spraying before you meet someone though as the initial spray smells like strong lemon pledge. Dry down is beautiful.

[–]Endorsed Contributorvandaalen0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

I have also noticed a problem with some washing powders. the combination will give it a hint of stinky feet with vomit.

[–]Endorsed Contributorvandaalen5 points6 points  (6 children) | Copy

it's a very polarizing fragrance though. it is one of the most successful ones because of the unusual combination of pinapple with wood, but not everyones taste.

I’ve had it and finished the 110 mls. It has moments where it’s good but it’s 3 flows are 1) opening is horrible 2) at times you can smell that it’s cheap and at times expensive, the cheap smell kills it 3) sticks to clothes, you may your shirt 3 times to get it off. It’s not that much of a compliment getter as much as people claim online

[–]RedDeAngelo3 points4 points  (5 children) | Copy

Dont waste it, spraying it in the air, moisturise before not after, and spray close to skin, and let it dry, dont smudge it.

[–]PM_ME_CHILL_MUSIC17 points18 points  (0 children) | Copy

Yes, go buy one. They don't have to be too expensive but your scent is important in order to be attractive in general. If you're at a job interview and smell like rat ass you're most likey not going to be hired, same goes for friends, girls and so on.

Your hygiene is important, don't smell

[–]Terdmuffin15 points16 points  (2 children) | Copy

I don't wear Cologne much, but I do coordinate my scent through other products (laundry detergent/fabric softener, body wash, etc) to be something like "fresh" or "clean breeze" or something like that and I get a lot of compliments on how I always smell so good. It's all stuff I use anyway so it doesn't cost me any extra.

[–]tacosattack9 points10 points  (1 child) | Copy

Nothing smells like clean breeze quite like a terdmuffin.

If it mixes with your own natural scent it should be unique enough. It's a very nice scent even though it can be a little strong. Seems to have some stigma around it in the cologne world but with girls I've gotten nothing but compliments.

[–]MikalCartier6 points7 points  (0 children) | Copy

I think it’s a necessity, every man should have his own scent

[–]anthero6 points7 points  (0 children) | Copy

In my experience, I have gotten more positive compliments about my "scent" when not wearing it. Only once did I get a positive comment while wearing it. I'm only counting comments from women I received after (or during) sleeping with them. My thoughts are that it will mask your scent to women with whom you are genetically incompatible but also the ones who would otherwise be attracted to you by pheramones. I generally don't wear it anymore for this reason. If you're below average or insecure, go for it. It might help.

[–]spndxwra4 points5 points  (0 children) | Copy

i have like 15 in my cupboard... love them and women do tooo ;)

[–]Mojiitoo4 points5 points  (0 children) | Copy

As 'thrashy' as it is, one million never failed me when I was young (14-19). Blue de Chanel is now my go to, very popular and chicks dig it.

Expensive yes, but IMO very well worth it. I pay 50-80 for a bottle that lasts me about a year? When you dress up it also gives that extra boost to your confidence. Smell is one of the key things that make girls attracted to you. If you smell like sweat for example, youre done. Its just that extra factor. If you smell nice, they are more likely to stay close to you.

There are also cheaper perfumes, Calvin Klein for example, thats just 20-30 or so, those are fine, better than nothing.

[–]Snowboard183 points4 points  (0 children) | Copy

Hell ya, versace eros is my go to.

Anyone got suggestions for a strong smelling cologne that will last for a good duration?

[–]zephenrage0 points1 point  (3 children) | Copy

A few questions for you. What occasions do you see yourself wearing this cologne? What is the maximum you’re willing to spend?

[–]MisplacedM1 point2 points  (2 children) | Copy

Day to day, not only for going out or special occasions. I’d like to keep it under 350, but the less expensive the better.

[–]zephenrage0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy

In my opinion the best all around fragrance for every reason, season and occasion is Chanel Allure Homme Sport Eau Extreme. That costs just north of $100. It’s safe to wear to the office but also good for the club. It’s a good every day scent. It’s definitely not recommended for the gym but other than that it’s very versatile. Check out some YouTube reviews on it. Two reviewers that I watch just recently made videos about it. YouTube fragrance reviewer Chaos Fragrances and smaller YouTube fragrance reviewer Mysterium Lugosi both made great videos on this cologne in recent weeks. I’ll give you links to both.

Girls will tell you you smell good. I apply some on my neck, a bit on my cheek since I live in a country where we greet through kissing, a bit on one wrist and rub it on my other one so that where my hands go good smell comes with it and then on my groin. That shit is as important as brushing your teeth.

I have dhi . I bought it in 2015. I still have it 90% full, it’s a masterpiece but it’s very warm and sweet. I would only use this in the fall and winter

[–]zephenrage1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy

Yep, that’s absolutely correct. DHI is a fall/winter scent.

I highly recommend Herod. It’s so much better than TV in my opinion.

[–]bombgg1 point2 points  (3 children) | Copy

It's good to wear. Not only women but people in general perceive you more. One thing though, don't buy one based on what others think, if possible, buy lots of small samples and try it out, see how it feels in your skin.

[–]throwaway210013[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children) | Copy

Yeah, everyone says that how the cologne reacts with your natural scent is extremely important. Is it really that important though? Like if the cologne by itself smells good then shouldn’t it smell basically the same on everyone?

[–]bombgg0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy

Smell good is subjective. Even if a thousand people say Armani is good for them, it doesn't mean it will suit your taste. I say this to you because I blind bought a lot of perfumes based on others opinions and became disappointed. The moment I started buying samples I found out what worked for me and could buy without worries. Just a friendly advice man.

Invictus Aqua is a GREAT one for warm weather. Women love it too.

[–]skyrunner221 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy

Yes. There are ways you can do it on a budget also. It has been a great opener in the past for me. Also a great peacock I guess too. Try many different scents and see what reaction you get.

Find one you like, develop a signature scent. You are still young, its not needed I will say but its never hurt me.

[–]Lalocal4life1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy

I use to. EVERYDAY.
I started going to different gyms and I decided to stop putting on cologne after my workout. Women started commenting Frequently, that they loved the way I smell after the gym minus the cologne post shower. After hearing this from different women for MONTHS. I stopped Now I just wear deodorant whenever I am not in a dress shirt and I they seem to love it.

I am positive my effort in the gym is directly related to my post gym smell. I never hear it on cardio days but I always do after free weights.

[–]catsdontsmile1 point2 points  (1 child) | Copy

Don't be a hillbilly, the cheap acceptable option is au de toilette. Cologne is just... bad. From scent to quality to how long it lasts. Its a big no. Women hate cologne, they can smell the cheapness. Just how they measure you by your shoes and watch.

[–]PhiPaul0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

There are brands that make cologne, aka eau de cologne which is the concentration, more often than they would release an eau de toilette or eau de parfum.

Acqua di Parma is one of them. $200+ a bottle. That's not cheap at all. And for sure doesn't smell like a cheap product. I know it because I had 3 bottles of Acqua di Parma. Also Roja Dove makes perfumes in 'parfum de cologne' concentration which aims to wear like a cologne (meaning to be close to skin, only to be smelt upclose by another person) but having great longevity, as the eau de cologne has little to no longevity; therefore an hybrid of eau de cologne (light on the nose and no longevity) and eau de parfum (heavy on the nose and great longevity)

[–]RedDeAngelo1 point2 points  (1 child) | Copy

People refer to all mens perfume as cologne, we're not talking about concentrations.

Also I find eu de toilettes, usually the better, value wise and sometimes even performance wise.

[–]WyldeCutter-3 points-2 points  (0 children) | Copy

I can't wear eau de toilette on account of it literally meaning "toilet water".

But yeah everyone's got their preferences, it's just usually dudes who say "perfume is only for women" are the ones scared to wear pink or get a manicure.

I personally like musky scents and you can only really get those with men's perfume.

Try Acqua di Parma if you want to go for a more classy approach. Everything this house puts on market is top notch.

Colonia, Colonia Intensa, Essenza, Colonia Assoluta. They also have some pricier stuff that centers around a note like sandalwood, amber, leather (i.e. Sandalo, Ambra, Leather)

That Leather one smells like money. It oozes luxury.

For work you can’t go wrong with Prada Amber Pour Homme or Prada L’Homme.

I don't think any cologne will score you big points, I have Aventus by Creed which is very nice, and with two spritz, it leaves a lingering smell if you stay around someone for a while.

I wear it to bed. Go out and get some it helps a bunch.

[–]lpfield0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Yes, I have too many fragrances. Not only chicks, but literally everybody notices it. I wear it for my enjoyment, smelling a complex fragrance change as the day goes on makes me feel good. Spray lightly though, you want it to be subtle. Don’t be that guy that gasses everyone out (yourself included)

If you’re trying to avoid hemorrhaging cash, TJ Maxx/Ross/Marshals etc have solid deals on some great cologne options.

I always keep a bottle of Chrome by Azzaro and a bottle of St. Barts by Tommy Bahama that only cost ~$25 at these stores. Great smells, nothing overwhelming, chicks love them.

I got 4 different colognes, get one or two big dog. An Armani one, Prada sport, a Versace one and a dolce & Gabbana.

I wear cologne when going out for drinks and on dates but not really to work or anything. I know they have day colognes but I just haven't really gotten there yet.

You can get a good cologne in the $70-80 dollar range. It's not like you have to break the bank for it.

I personally wear Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gio Profumo which is around that range if I recall correctly. The main difference between cologne and a body spray is when applied correctly, cologne isn't overpowering and stays on for like 10 hours. It also doesn't smell as cheap.

Pretty much every girl I've been with has said I smell amazing. Even girls I wasn't hooking up with.

Yes. You smell nice. Women compliment you and when you fuck at their place, it stays in the sheets and makes them think of you.

Just don't overdue it.

Women are looking for any excuse to get closer.

Issey Mikyaki for men is something I get attention with among others. Brand name does and doesn’t matter with cologne.

I have sensitive skin so no. My spray on deodorant smells really good though

[–]Per_Horses60 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Yes, it’s a must

Dude I've been wearing only montblanc legend for years and I've never been with a chick who didn't like it. Check it out

[–]zephenrage1 point2 points  (1 child) | Copy

Dude, I just bought the giant bottle of that. I think it’s a 6.7 Oz. I wore it today and yesterday to test it out and I’m not liking it. I’m disappointed. I have around 100 bottles in my collection. I prefer Chanel Platinum Egoiste to Legend. If I knew you in real life I’d give you my bottle of Legend for free.

Well thanks man lol. I came around to it. I just dont like very "spicy" or heavy scents. A lot of colognes remind me of brut hahaha

Dior Sauvage. Slightly pricey but such a great purchase

[–]DidYouUseAJimmy0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Buy a nice one, put a nice sized squirt on your upper chest lower neck area, and your good, use a nicely complementing deodorant and you will smell great.

I use Versace le homme and old spice deodorant, my last ltr was crazy about it.

I'd wear for special events such as night galas or cocktail parties. I don't wear on the regular but taking a shower and using a not -so-strong scented body wash goes a long way especially on regular days. Just keep in mind when the last time you showered and put on deodorant. and how much you're sweating too...

[–]PerformanceFitness0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Dior Sauvage baby, they love it

[–]Red_Raze0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Yeah I spray some on my wrists and rub it on my neck and insides of my elbow. "Only the brave" it's called. Bitches love that cologne. Instant pussy soaker.

[–]HoedownInBrownTown0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Definitely worth wearing, but going overboard, especially if it's already strong, will make you almost repulsive. No need to spend a fortune just try some of the smelly sticks at the shop.

[–]redaftrp0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Ralph Lauren Polo Red is what I wear.

[–]mraees930 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Git mine as present. I use IG man for the last 6 years. Only use it when I go out so the bottle is only halfway now. Really good investment.

Guys. I personally recommend staying away from Acqua di Gio. It’s the best selling cologne of all time. Every one of your plates is gonna have an ex who used to wear that very specific cologne. Do you wanna smell like every chick’s ex boyfriend ever? lol Leave AdG for the basic blue pill chumps. I have somewhere around 100 bottles in my collection ranging in price between $10 all the way up to $300. I’ve seen great fragrances get discontinued over the years, and great new ones come out. I’ve rocked classic scents myself such as Dior’s Fahrenheit or Calvin Klein’s Eternity and Obsession. But I like to wear frags that not every Joe Blow wears for the most part.

What do you think about CDNIM? Everyone else is recommending it but I’m starting to think I should just get something that goes well with my natural scent

[–]zephenrage1 point2 points  (1 child) | Copy

CDNIM is great bang for your buck! It’s a cheapie that performs like a rockstar. As affordable as CDNIM is I say go for it but I think every guy should have a minimum of 3 fragrances for different reasons.

There’s also a concept called “The Starting Line Up.” It’s like a basketball team has 5 men on the court. You have 5 fragrances for different reasons. 1. Your signature scent. A cologne you wear for regular everyday use. e.g. Versace - Pour Homme. 2. Work Scent e.g. Prada - L’Homme 3. Date/Close Quarter Scent e.g. Carolina Herrera - Prive 4. Club Scent/Night our Scent e.g. Versace - Eros 5. Dressed Up/Suit & Tie Scent - Tom Ford Grey Vetiver

Versace Dylan Blue, not crazy expensive. But man women love it

[–]digidydang-1 points0 points  (0 children) | Copy

Hell no. The shit is disgusting, and you don't need it. If you think you do your not there yet. I'm a man. Do I wear perfume. F'ck no.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
