To me, her second statement is more telling. She definitely contributed to me romanticizing my own trauma, depression, and “pick me I’m not like those other girls” type of behavior. I was a huge fan. Now I don’t know how to feel.

When I first saw Lana's post I thought her comments were ridiculous and tone deaf. When she dismissed WOC experiences and insisted she was a "real victim" of the patriarchy I was like WOW😒. She may act like she's unbothered but clearly she's triggered by these female artist winning. I'm glad that most of them didn't even bother responding to her lol!

I know what she means about the delicate woman. But her statement is contradictory because she talks about the delicate woman she is, while calling out other woman on their “unseemly” behavior.

I understand the plight of the “delicate” woman. You want to be treasured, you want to be handled with care. Most times, when I argue or lose my temper, I’m shaking because it is not my character. And I guarantee that being in that mindset alone opens you up for abuse. I’ve been there. I know better now.

She doesn’t have to bring down other women and their behavior because she wants to be viewed a certain way. It doesn’t help that they are WOC (even Ariana, as Italian, can be subjected to racism).

And that’s the separate, more pressing issue. Her white privilege, which makes her believe it’s okay to associate WOC with crude, tacky, scandalous behavior. Her whiteness, which believes that these women are not delicate or worthy of being delicate, because of their behavior.

I can go on and on, but I think she’s wrong and obtuse for not even acknowledging her wrongness. But it is what is-WOC (all women really) are delicate, strong, sexual, and assertive. We fuck and we make love. And no one will convince me otherwise.

She’s being a clown and making herself look bad. She should have just sat down and ate her food instead of causing a Twitter storm. If you look at the charts, Ariana’s #1 songs (7 rings, Thank U, Next) aren’t even about sex. Neither are Nicki’s or Beyoncé’s so she’s upset about an arbitrary standard.

I actually don't think I disagree with her. But let me know if I'm reading it wrong.

IMO, a lot of female artists talk about love, sex, and relationships, but it's usually framed as "empowerment," so we can sing even breakup songs (like thank u, next) without having to interrogate our feelings about them. Lana Del Rey sings about similar subjects, but from a position of having been used, hurt, or taken for granted, which is difficult enough. But then she doesn't even try to make it empowering -- she leans into the weakness and submissiveness that other women might feel embarrassed by. It's hard to hear, but it's true for her, and it's true for a lot of women.

I don't think there's anything wrong with admitting that, as women, we have the potential to be both weak and strong, sometimes even at the same time. She didn't need to name specific singers (especially Beyonce, because "Why Don't You Love Me is just a Lana Del Rey video with a tempo change), but I kind of see where her frustration is coming from.

Hmmmm idk. To me she seems to promote objectification like the other female artists she mentioned. I dont know if she is more criticized, but if she is not going to reflect on the message she sells, or explain how it benefits women as a class, then I cant take her seriously.

I was also influenced a lot by her music, especially when I was dealing with break ups. I'm not sure whether it helped me or plunged me further into depression. I have two thoughts on her post; firstly, why is she trying to argue for a double standard with other female pop artists when the real double standard exists among male rappers who have always been guilty of sexual, immoral, violent and misogynistic lyrics? Secondly, if she chooses to exclude herself from feminism, why is she demanding a place for women like her in the movement?

I don't know, despite all the controversy she'll always be one of my favourite artists. I just hope she'll choose the right path.

She needs to write a new song called whiney white girl bc thats what she is. She’s whining over people rightfully criticizing her glamorization/romanticization of abuse. We all have the right to express ourselves and share our experiences no matter how dark they are, but it is dangerous to portray something like abuse in a romantic light. She’s taken it so personally that she cant see what the critiques are even directed at; not her sharing of her experiences but the way she portrays them. Gross. And she didnt pave the way for anyone lol. Also love how she seemed to only call out women of color...Btw i love her music but as someone with the ability to critically analyze things, which is unfortunately rare, the lyrics are often fucked and she’s annoying.

Not a fan of how she severely distanced herself from a list of predominantly woc artists. Beyoncé’s lemonade was literally chocked full of lyrics centered around her insecurities, I believe all of these artists do in some ways. The underlying message is that they are louder, less delicate and don’t have moments of weakness which further perpetuates these negative stereotypes of woc. The whole statement is tone deaf and v cringe.

I agree with her!! I love that I mostly grew up in a time where women made all their “bad bitch” music and movies but I don’t think that’s the ONLY kind of woman that deserves support. Meek and shy women still exist, I am one myself, but that doesn’t mean I’m a pushover. I’m passive, but not a doormat. I’m sensitive and a pleaser in relationships, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have boundaries or make me a pickme.

And I think that’s exactly what Lana is saying. People think that being revolutionary has to be loud, crazy, and never seen before, but women who have qualities that are traditionally feminine can be strong too. People accuse her of glorifying abuse or “ride or die” behavior when she’s just sharing her experiences, and clearly, many people can relate. There’s nothing wrong with that and I have absolutely no idea why this has become such a big deal.

We’re supposed to be defending and protecting fellow women. ALL women. Not just the ones who are bold and aggressive. Soft, passive, insecure, quiet, women need love and support from sisters too.

Why is beyonces and cardi bs (stong, masculine, bad bitch) type of femininity accepted in mainstream culture but lanas is not?

Men lead relationships, men protect women, men provide for women, imo this is a HV trait

And yes sometimes men can lead a woman down the wrong path like the partying and drugs she sings about

Lana is not a doormat, she admits her relationships were not always what she hoped, she is honest in her music, writing about her actual lived experiences. Emotional abuse is a shared experience of many women

Ariana, beyonce, etc. are making pornographic art mostly WRITTEN BY MEN, their music revolves around the male gaze and yet that is acceptable in feminist circles.

Lana is 100% authentic and honest about her flaws and her naivety and her sadness and disappointment

Do feminists demand that women never be vulnerable and always try to act like Queen Bitch?

We need to set an example and teach meek naive girls like lana that its ok to be that way but there are ways to find a middle ground in relationships with men which includes weeding out the guys who will take advantage of your vulnerability

the point of art is to express yourself. *your* self. this is who she is and that's why her art is like that. there's nothing wrong with it. this is how art is supposed to work! people get confused today ... she's making a statement that other people want to buy, not making a product tailor-made to every consumer. it's her thoughts / soul, not a new type of fast food.

as for the harvey weinstein thing. tbh, i don't know what to make of the footage of him in the background at one of her shows. but i do know that she wrote a little song story about him in which she played the role of the kind of girl who would fall for him. she said she didn't understand what he had been doing, she just thought the idea of someone wanting to get with him was funny. she wrote it BEFORE everything with weinstein went down, and then once it went down she said she was never going to perform the song again. "harvey's in the sky with diamonds and he's driving me crazy ... i know your wife (bitch) wouldn't mind". it's a send-up, imho.

I think she's super ignorant to think she's the only woman who "says no but men hear yes," the only woman that men hate, and the only woman to receive criticism for being "fragile." WTF is she on about? I think she was super mad and emotionally charged at the time because I can't reason why she would post it otherwise. She wants feminism to embrace her pick-me vibes while not changing her ways. She's so grossly privileged and I'll say it again, ignorant. Her responses to this post prove that even more. I'll add that she thinks everyone is ok with black women and women of color stripping and pole dancing but not her...firstly, I'm thinking "boo hoo," but secondly, I don't support that shit with ANY woman, regardless of race. I think any woman who gains validation from males sexualizing them is sad and I hope that woman levels up and stops seeking outside validation and realizes her worth outside of sex. Lana is coming from a really one-sided, close-minded viewpoint and isn't willing to listen to others. She's willfully ignorant and likes it that way-she doesn't think there's anything wrong with her, so I can't support her BS message.
