"I'm not a mind reader" is funny because that man can make all kinds of assumptions about why I am doing XYZ whilst skillfully ignoring my repeated explanations of why I am doing XYZ. They repeat this behaviour in the hope that one day you relent and start doing it their way just to keep the peace.

That argument about putting your clothes in the laundry hamper was always about me "controlling him" and was never about him being a grown arse man who could stop throwing his clothes at it and leaving them on the floor when he missed.

No, no, no. If he does something wrong, it should be fairly obvious, especially if you're suddenly cold and distant. He should apologize and correct his obvious fuck-ups. Sometimes people do upset us inadvertently, but if you're acting differently, avoiding your anger and pretending it doesn't exist shows you don't care about the person's emotional well-being, so when the fuck-ups are more subtle, say casually mentioning to some friends an embarrassing story your partner thought you were okay with since you laughed together about it in the past, the very least a caring partner would do is ask how you're feeling and what has upset you.

Even if your partner wasn't the cause of your anger or sadness, becoming quiet and distant when you're normally a bubbly person should be a sign that something is wrong and they should acknowledge it, ask what the problem is, and help you get through it to show that they care about you. There is no reason you have to put yourself through more emotional labor to find support from your partner when you're already exhausted and worn-out from being upset in the first place.

Men are totally mind-readers... when they play sports in a team, defend or prosecute in a legal case, teach, wait tables, search for criminals, work with hunting dogs, conduct business negotiations, compete in a hand-to-hand sport.
