Maybe it was the existence of still unexplored parts of Earth, constant wars in all regions, the presence of religion and local traditional providing a narrative through which you can find meaning in your life. There's simply too many people and only so many opportunities for adventure and excitement. Bronze Age Pevert refers to this as life in an "owned space". I suppose it will take massive population decrease or space exploration finally taking off for this to change.
