trade your slight risk of protate cancer for their serious risk of being raped,
Men are as likely, if not more likely (counting prison rape) to get raped...
being killed,
Men are about 4 to 5 times more likely to be killed violently than women are.
starving to death,
The fuck are you on about?
Are you just making shit up so you can have more to list?
or dying of preventable diseases
like... prostate cancer?

trade your slight risk of protate cancer
About 80 percent of men who reach age 80 have prostate cancer cells in their prostate. source
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Doctor here. The only reason prostate cancer doesn't kill man is because something else did. It's inevitable.
Oh and our ability to screen for it is shit.

I feel that this is overlooked a shit tonne. Especially considering how proud medical charities are of releasing their funding for each cancer and prostate cancer has sweet fuck all.

I've told this to the last 4 people that called my home asking for Breast Cancer donations.
Sorry, I think it's a horrible thing, my Grandmother died from it. But I won't contribute any money to its research when Prostate Cancer is so severely underfunded comparatively.
[–]T4keTheShot[S] 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Also most breast cancer foundations are just to promote "awareness" so they spend money basically getting people to wear pink clothes but do nothing for researching a cure.
[–]MerfAvenger 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Not necessarily true. I've done some grunt work in fundraising for those charities and most of it works out at about two thirds going to research. Thats a lot, however one third of the funding goes into awareness/fundraising campaigns which is still hundreds of millions of pounds.
[–]kireol 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
This depends on where you get your data.
According to cancer.gov, more people die of breast cancer (40,450) than prostate(26,120). http://www.cancer.gov/types/common-cancers
[–]Prometheus720 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The misconception comes from a bunch of posts of flyers around bathrooms in Australia, where that statement actually WAS true in recent years.
But for the rest of the world, prostate cancer is less deadly even if it causes far greater numbers of more minor complications.
[–]Cryptoparapyromaniac 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Men still have a higher mortality rate when it comes to breast cancer. Doctors won't acknowledge and spread awareness that men get breast cancer too. Sure, it's one in a thousand, but shouldn't we be taught to screen like girls are. Instead, it's treated as a "women's" disease. Unless women are the only ones that get it, we should spread awareness regardless of what gender you are.
[–]WaitingToBeBanned 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
Technically true but somewhat misleading.
Breast cancer is objectively worse, but it gets a LOT more attention.
That is kinda sad when you think about it. That prostate cancer could be made a non-issue with a fraction of the funding of breast cancer.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Why is something which kills less objectively worse?
[–]Prometheus720 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Because it doesn't kill less. His comment is incorrect for most of the world.
[–]Zephs 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Breast cancer hits a lot younger. The number above says 80% of men at 80 have prostate cancer cells, but how often do men actually die strictly because from prostate cancer? 80 is already an above-average lifespan. Prostate cancer is common, but hits really late in life, and isn't particularly fatal. By the time you have it, even if you cure it, you're only adding a small amount of time before heart disease or something else takes you anyway, and you often die before it gets really bad because of those same reasons. More men die with prostate cancer, but I'm pretty sure fewer men die of prostate cancer than people that die from breast cancer.
Breast cancer is way worse overall.
[–]u8eR 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Yes, but the numbers aren't men who died while having prostate cancer. The numbers are men who die from prostate cancer, the number is higher than those who die from breast cancer.
[–]Zephs -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Source? Someone else posted a source that shows the opposite, with the number of prostate cancer deaths only a bit higher than half of breast cancer deaths.
And even if the number were to be higher, how old are people dying? A disease that kills mostly geriatric people who are going to die of x, y, or z in the next year or two anyway would still not be as objectively bad as a disease that kills fewer people, but those people would otherwise live another 30+ years.
[–]Mens-Advocate 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Deaths from breast cancer run about 10% higher. Research funding runs 300% higher.
[–]Zephs 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
That's still not a source. Person below provided a source. I could say it's a billion times higher, but without a source, there's no evidence.
Also, "deaths" is not the ultimate decider here. If there are 10% higher deaths, but they're mostly 80+ years old, I'd still say that breast cancer is worse, as the men dying from prostate cancer aren't going to get as many productive years out of a cure as breast cancer would. And yes, there's actually a formula for figuring out how many lives would be saved by curing one disease over another, and how to spend money on research. A cure for prostate cancer is simply less valuable.
[–]Mens-Advocate 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
You're a coprophage twice over.
First the research effort is trivial, but you didn't bother.
Prostate 10837 deaths. http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/health-professional/cancer-statistics/statistics-by-cancer-type/prostate-cancer/mortality#heading-Zero.
Breast 11643 deaths. http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/health-professional/cancer-statistics/statistics-by-cancer-type/breast-cancer/mortality#heading-Zero.
As I said, the difference is roughly 10%.
Second, you find a reason male death is less serious than female death. Kindly go 4nik8 yourself.
[–]Prometheus720 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That's not true, actually. IIRC, your comment only holds true in Australia in recent years. More men GET prostate cancer, but it's not as deadly. It may ruin your life, but you won't die, and nobody will see the evidence except you, your partner, and anyone who is around when you can't control your bodily functions properly anymore.
[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Somebody call the fucking burn unit.
I had a girl tell me men were privileged because woman had the threat of being able to have children.
I said, "Men have the threat of never being able to father a child."
"You can always just use someone else's sperm."
And you can always use someone else's womb.
"But I can't if I can't produce the eggs! That wouldn't be my child!"
AND IT WOULDN'T TECHNICALLY BE MY CHILD YOU FUCKING IDIOT, BUT I WOULDN'T BE SUCH A COLD-HEARTED BITCH TO THINK OF IT LIKE THAT! It was a test, and I knew that's what you'd say.

Here we have a CDC study from 2010. Scroll down to page 18/19 and you'll find the statistics in question.
I'm looking at prevalence within the last twelve months, you've got 1.1 percent of all female participants reporting rape. For men there are no rapes reported, but if you look a little closer you'll find something interesting.
Men who were forced to penetrate someone else, against their will (made to penetrate) report in at... 1.1 percent.
These numbers do not include prison rape.

To be completely clear, you don’t have to be a man to have a prostate, and you don’t have to have a prostate to be a man.

Being a man, according to Movember, implies an archaic view of gender that implies that only a male/female gender binary exists, and that you aren’t really a man if you don’t necessarily identify with that binary.

My father died of prostate cancer. At age 62 let me tell you what a privilege it was for him to die so young. He was one of the most caring, intelligent and passionate people in the world. As his youngest son it was a great privilege to watch this very serious disease rip the life from his body. I'm not the kind of person to get offended easily. I even find cancer jokes funny. Make light of the things that hurt us in life sort of deal. This has irked me so greatly that I'm in tears. I hate misandrony disguised as feminism. It's unfortunate that the militant (read: idiot) minority make such a terrible stain on feminist movement, but when I read shit like this, I get angry to my core.

Health spending on men is lower. Spending on 'male' cancers is lower. Male death rates from cancer are 1.5 times that of women. Men die younger generally. It is beyond debate, women are privileged.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Women - stop talking about how you could get raped. Take a shower. Toughen up. Don't act like rape is such a big deal.
There are people in this world who would trade your slight risk of getting raped for being no longer considered disposable, being expected to fight and die in wars, an increased suicide risk, disproportional homelessness, their dangerous dirty and difficult jobs.
And for everyone, if you want to work on gendered problems, give some food to that homeless male veteran who lives in the park. Don't spend your limited time and concern and support on feminist inspired pseudo-issues.
I need to unsubscribe from this subreddit. This shit makes my blood boil.
[–]Florient 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
I've this debate with feminists before. They love pushing the "prostate cancer is deadly" because they love to misrepresent the facts.
Prostate cancer is the biggest cancer killer of nonsmoking men. Yes the survival rate is high, but because the cancer is so common, the number of deaths is still high relative to other cancers.
It's like how 10% of 1000 is more than 50% of 100, even though 50% is a larger percent than 10%.
Prostate grows slowly, yes, but starts young, so by the late 60s men are dying at higher numbers than from any other cancer besides lung cancer.
This is a classic example of why it is fair to label feminism as a hate group. They go out of their way to spread LIES just to hurt men, even when it doesn't help women at all. These people are dangerous. It's also interesting to note that the author is male, male feminists are some of the very worst, because they are the most mentally ill.

Dear friends, let's talk about once again something really important today: men. There are still people among us, I have heard, who think that men are worth something, that their death or suffering is somehow wrong. Lets be honest, in todays society a rape accusation means nothing anymore. If you have ever had sex while having a drop of alcohol in your system then technically it is rape. Everyone knows Lena Dunham lied when she accused the guy of raping her but she is still seen as a hero by feminists. She should go to jail, the guy could easily have ended up in prison because of her false accusations.
