I want to do an AITA style check in on my marriage counseling fail.

After 20+ yrs, wife says ‘we need a divorce.’ I say lets try marriage counseling…

She is reluctant even up to the moment of showing up to the counselor. One of the first statements out of her mouth is “I see no way forward.” My opening is essentially ‘I love my wife, I hope this is a lull that we can work through.’ (Single quotes are estimations, double quotes are exact quotes. I am not a human voice recorder, but somethings stand out exactly.)

Counselor gets to know us a bit starting with my wife. She is dramatic and emotional; presents some information that when doing a project in our yard, I didn’t purchase cedar for the garden boxes (during covid when the price of wood shot up) and that I had Wi-Fi security cameras self installed in the house.

I brought up trust issues and feedback about things in tasks around the house. First, my wife went out with a guy (multiple divorces) visiting from her hometown in the downtown area of our major city. I wanted her to meet him publicly in a neutral place; they met at the bar of his hotel. When going home, she needed to cross a park know for finding dead bodies. I wanted her to Uber to the train station; he walked her through the. park. She wanted to have him meet our kids as they had some similarities growing up didn’t want him to come to our house but to meet at a neutral place near our house; he picked them up at our house. Second,, if the kitchen needs cleaning after dinner, and I clean it, she yells at me for not doing it Exactly how she wants it. If I don’t do anything, I get yelled at cause it is not done. The outcome is the same no matter the effort; why do anything?

The Counselor wanted to focus on something we could ‘come together’’ on so she picked the security camera issue. Her solution was for me to give up control of the security decisions in my house. We needed an independent third party to consult which my wife suggested her BIL (sisters husband) or an old friend’s techy husband. The counselor said “your stuck” several times when I did not want to give up control of the security of my house.

The counselor had Chosen an issue to focus on, but appeared to distinctly side with my wife and against me. It was poor strategy and execution on the counselor’s behalf. It effectively shut down the objectivity of the counselor. Paired with my wife’s opening statement, counseling failed…. I am seeking advice if I was wrong.
