Hey man I hear ya. Separated for two months in the same house and I’m dreading what you’re going through today. I ask myself all the time now - how the fuck did I fuck up this badly? I didn’t do anything egregious or obvious; she just built a narrative and hasn’t changed from it. It’s mind boggling after nearly 25 years.

Unless you did something egregious here then YOU didn’t fail. She did. Nobody’s perfect. If perfect is the metric to go by then every single man and woman is an utter failure.

She likely has her own issues. She makes her own poor decisions. She puts herself in less than ideal situations based on being led by her own emotions. If these things are true then none of that is a reflection of YOU being the failure. You can control none of those things.

You’re going to feel pain for a while. You’ll wonder if she’s actually happy without you or just acting out. After some time it’ll hurt if she ever admits that she feels she’s made the right decision. These things hurt. Your mind is probably racing thinking about any and everything to do with the situation. You feel like you can’t stop the flood of emotions and your mind racing.

These things will fade. I want you to go outside, close your eyes, and take the deepest breaths you’ve ever taken in your life.

DO NOT blow up her phone!!! DO NOT beg!!!

Doing this will drive her further from you. She won’t come back. She’s not trying to listen to your reasons right now. She’s not going to act based on logic. Emotions are driving the bus right now and reason might tell her to come back. So if you keep pushing reason (what goes against her emotions) she’ll feel even more impassioned about leaving. Doesn’t make sense to men but women go by it. Give it time. Give space. Give silence. If she messed up she needs to let reality teach her that lesson, not the man she’s trying to prove to herself that she should leave.

Will she come back? Who knows. And at the moment, as much as you don’t want to hear it…who cares. If she comes back to a mess it doesn’t matter. In this moment you need to fight to stay calm. Go take those breaths. Put on some calming music. And ONLY think about how to take care of yourself in the moment. I’ve been where you are and if I could do it over again I’d follow the advice I just gave you.

When somebody wants to leave, let ‘em walk.
