I've been married for almost 25 years with 4 kids all living at home, 18 or older, and out of high school. I live in Indiana.

My wife and I have been having trouble for about 10 years, and it's been really bad since Christmas 2023.

How much of my story do you need to know?

  • I've lied to her about our debt, but it's all been for family stuff (vacations, remodeling, school stuff, even groceries). I don't gamble or anything like that.
  • I was the sole earner while we raised our kids, and she went back to work about 3 years ago.
  • I've never been unfaithful in the slightest way.
  • She's had 3 physical affairs, and several inappropriate texting relationships. We worked through them, and I forgave her.
  • She's an alcoholic (two bottles of wine a day) and smokes pot all day. She spent time in rehab twice for drinking and to get off benzos, and she's not in a recovery program now.
  • She has verbally attacked all her family and all my family to the point that they have blocked her number and won't talk to her.

She's said she wants a divorce several times in the past year, and after I saw some inappropriate texts recently, something in me broke, and I no longer want to stay married. I told her that several months ago, and we've been waiting for the kids to graduate before talking about it. They graduated this weekend.

I haven't spoken to a lawyer because I wanted to work through mediation or something less aggressive. I was also waiting for graduation.

However, she met with a lawyer on the phone today, and I got these texts tonight:

"We can speak tomorrow but you need to know you need to be out of the house by Sunday. My lawyer says we cannot continue to be in the same home. I agree. If you don't plan on leaving by Sunday, I plan on filing an injunction. We will meet before a judge next week and you still will have to leave plus we will have to both pay $1000 in court costs. So, your parents' house or mine. You just have to leave. My 4 kids still live at home and you cannot ask them to leave without notice either."

"I'm going to need an affirmative. Or I will plan to involve the kids and the law, ok?"

My reply was "I need a little time to digest this. I can't answer you right away..."

She replied: "No you don't. We haven't slept in the same room minus 2 times in a year, over a year. You have all my family and you have all your family. This is YOUR consequence. You leave by sun one way or another. I'll call my lawyer tomorrow and you'll be out either way."

I'm really frustrated because I didn't want to be in conflict about the divorce. I don't really care if she gets everything, because I feel like all of the financial problems are my fault. Also, I don't have money for a lawyer right now, and she knows that. Neither does she, really.

What do I do!? How do I respond!?
