I recently spoke on how I just left a traumatically bonded relationship and during the relationship the therapist I saw gaslit me and I took blame for reactive abuse based on her advice. The relationship became a nightmare of me receiving no empathy, but taking on the blame of lashing out when I was at my wits end. But I blamed myself, and my therapist told me I was responsible bc I failed to articulate my needs. The issue wasn’t that I didn’t articulate them. The issue was I stopped bc anytime I did they were either blatantly or covertly disregarded and/or I was gaslit into having none, lowering my expectations, giving him the “benefit of the doubt” for breaking boundaries and not meeting any needs by the end. It was a complete shit show, and my therapist let me down.

When I tried calmly discussing it w her this past week she started to argue w me. Instead of taking responsibility, or hearing me. Which felt even worse, bc it’s what I’ve been dealing w with my ex for over a year.

So this week and weekend I’ve spent time trying to find trauma informed therapists and I have a few appointments.

Does anyone have suggestions as to what to ask to find out if they’re the right fit?

To find out if this therapist would be able to gauge the subtleties of a vulnerable covert narcissists abuse tactics?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I know I won’t be dating anytime soon so it’s almost too late to get a new therapist but I definitely need someone who fully understands the level of impact, re-wounding, and gaslighting I endured, and won’t dismiss the role they played in my participation of the unfavorable unfolding that occurred where she did not have my back.

Thanks.
