Obviously his reaction was stupid, so no defending him here, but I think you could also have reacted a lot better. Just saying "no thank you" is a bit harsh in my opinion - you could at least have answered with something like "I'm sorry, but I'm not interested". Until his last message, he didn't do anything wrong as far as I can tell, so I think "because I said no" is a really rude answer. You obviously don't "owe" him an explanation, but you could at least be polite.
