My husband and I have this convo all the time. He says “I’m so glad I don’t have girls. I’d have to be over protective”.

I tell him no we wouldn’t. Why would we treat a daughter any different? She would have autonomy over her own body, a voice to speak up with, and confidence and independence and all the shit that boys supposedly have.

He can’t explain exactly why it’s different. I’m sending this to him.

... But you know, the converse is also true. I've seen a lot of men who will treat women with respect until they are one of "their" women. Like, men who treat their female friends well, but, like, immediately downgrade their treatment and become controlling if they start dating. Men who are decent to their girlfriends, but immediately treat them like shit once they're married.

"My" woman means I can treat her how I want. It's all an extension of treating women like objects and failing to conceive of us as human. My own father and brother are incredibly polite and considerate to women outside the house, but it's a whole other tune at home... Crazy.
