A person who wants to communicate will make it happen.

Start detaching yourself from him because he doesn't seem too invested and will end up dragging you into a long winded talking phase until he figures what he wants or shock you with "I'm not that interested". Your best bet would be to protect yourself from all that by dwindling the conversation and finding better dating options. Also, don't give them that ego hype by asking them why they aren't replying fast enough because they'll start thinking they got you wrapped around their finger. Show your indifference—you're so busy with other people and things in your life to notice that he is in fact taking so long to reply. I feel like some guys want you to notice and ask.

So a fella I like says the same B.S. He’s on Reddit and Discord, but not any other social media (that’s fine, whatevs) and he claims he sucks at texting and his parents even get mad at him about it. But guess what?! He talks to them on the phone! And he talks to a mutual male BFF of ours on the phone! Does he answer my phone calls? Nope. Does he text me on his own? Rarely. Does he answer my texts? Rarely. It hurts to say this, but it means I don’t mean shit to him, and he doesn’t actually even think of me as a friend. So he can fuck off. I hid his alerts today.

It’s 100% an excuse, it means he’s lazy and not very invested because if he felt like he had to or wanted to put the effort in, he would.

Giving benefit of the doubt, I have really weird triggers with texting because of my chronic illness and not being able to read at the worst of it. I also don’t like the stress of having people freak out on me if I don’t text back right away. I’ve basically cut off all people who are like this, but it’s ruined the fun of texting for me. Also my parents are foreign so there have been many fights around misinterpreted texts or texts read a few days later that confused them. It’s just that I do not want to text after my experiences.

That being said, if it’s legitimate he would be making alternative arrangements to talk with you. There is FaceTime, phone calls etc.

Also, the only person I don’t “suck at texting” with is my SO. So if he really wants you he will make an effort.

If you’re not compatible, you’re not compatible.

They suck at texting you.

I don’t like or expect huge amounts of conversation via text but I do expect some interaction daily if I’m dating someone. Everyone checks their phone first thing in the morning and just before they go to bed.

We all get busy sometimes but if it’s a consistent problem, they’re not worth it.

We all know if you like someone you get excited at telling them about your day.

It’s one thing to have certain scheduled things that make it impossible I hold a conversation over text (like work, sleep, or D&D games) and set clear boundaries around those times like “I’ll respond if I have a minute at work or during a break from the game, but this is time I’m spending on something else, so talking to you isn’t my top priority right now”. It’s another thing to randomly drop out of a conversation and only give a reason later (as long as it’s not an emergency).

No functional adult is capable of responding in minutes all day, people should have times when they’re busy, and social things like D&D are part of that, but if he’s not communicating about when he’s busy, that’s a red flag for me. It’s ok if we don’t talk for a bit, but make sure we’re both on the same page about it.

Tell him “huh, that’s strange- usually when guys don’t enjoy texting they love calling me” If he doesn’t start calling you quickly as a response to that then he just doesn’t like you very much Also I’m very much in the nerd world but discord + reddit + no social media + lots of d and d.... this sounds like a gamer guy who are usually not the type of men I find worthwhile. Does he play video games, and if so, does he spend an unreasonable amount of time doing so? That’s usually a good reason to vet because gaming is an addictive and non productive hobby

i don't expect anyone to look at their phones at all times, that would be ridiculous. but if you are interested in that person, you reply as soon as you read it (or have the time to properly answer, if it's a long one). end of story.

an hour doesn't seem too long to me though. might be watching a movie or reading or something. at least that's what i'm usually doing if i don't reply quickly.
