FDS became the last stop on my journey to fully recover from a pick-me and "not like other girls" syndromes. I used to either hate how I look, compared to other women, or hate on them in order to impress men. Not anymore, thanks to all you queens here!

Self proclaimed empaths from my experience are usually narcissists LMAO

[–]Guyincognito9876FDS Newbie 30 points31 points32 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This has 100% been my experience. I’ve dated two men for whom this is the case.

My ex claimed that he was very empathic. I just stared at this man whos emotional range was suppressed onto a teaspoon. A man who's emotional labour was non-existent. At that point, him claiming he's so empathetic must mean he actually did notice my struggles and did nothing.

Male “empaths” are hilarious. Testosterone lowers empathy.

[–]sleepysiriFDS Newbie 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Omg can you tell me more about that testosterone thing? I’m eager to learn about this.

[–]pickmieshaexorcistRuthless Strategist 177 points178 points179 points 4 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Well there’s a difference between people who have empathy, and an “empath”. No offense to anyone but irl people who have described themselves as “empaths” to me or others were always, uh, questionable.

Men DO act like wanting them to use basic empathy is akin to wanting them to be an empath or “psychic” and that’s a bunch of bullshit for sure.

[–]mercybenelliFDS Newbie 112 points113 points114 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Everyone I’ve met that describes as an empath is someone who needs to make someone else’s pain about them. “Oh, your sadness is making me sad!” I’m a very empathetic person and feel deeply for other people, but I keep that to myself. Self-identified empaths need you to know that they are also feeling your feelings.

[–]BBQCoolRanchQueenFDS Apprentice 91 points92 points93 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The people I've run across who've self identified as "empaths" or, even more cringe-worthy, "super empaths" were narcissistic and toxic af, usually involved in some spiritual new age scrotery. Empathy is something that's been trained out of people via the media, p-rn, shitty misogynistic music, victim blaming culture, crap father figures, etc, to the point where it's seen as a rarity. "Empath" is the new Nice Guy.

[–]Inspection-CriticalFDS Newbie 53 points54 points55 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Among women, I've noticed it usually means "doormat" or "enabler."

There's nothing noble about codependency. You'll drive yourself crazy with toxic men.

[–]pickmieshaexorcistRuthless Strategist 29 points30 points31 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Same here, most self-described “empaths” I know have been women and it’s not just that they’re doormats. They glorify the doormat lifestyle, behaving like toxic judgmental martyrs.

[–]2340000FDS Apprentice 19 points20 points21 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My former acquaintance was an "empath" who defended racists and rapists🙄

People who volunteer such information are forcing emotional intimacy. They want you to spill your secrets and trust them faster🚩

Most people have empathy unless they have a personality disorder or something.

[–]edelbiatchFDS Newbie 84 points85 points86 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

In fact, most mammals have empathy, especially those who live in groups. What else keeps animals from eating their partner after sex? What makes them care for their children instead of eating them? Empathy and prosocial behavior is not a super power but the bare minimum to survive as a species who relies heavily on cooperation with individuals and groups.

[–]janestnycrk4FDS Newbie 48 points49 points50 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That sounds more like they are psychopathic to me. RUN

[–]CCVeediVee 12 points13 points14 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This meme is exactly why most men make terrible friends to women. They start off acting like they understand you but eventually devolve into telling you the reasons for what you do and say because they suddenly know you better than you do.

Lol that's funny. People that identify as empaths give me major "not like other girls" vibes.

We all are capable of empathy. We do not have a special skill to be capable of it. 😆

[–]Disastrous-Tasks 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Maybe I’m just going too far, but most people who call themselves “empaths” are either manipulative men or women who do a ridiculous amount of emotional labour for anyone they meet

[–]BeingLucky859 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you have to say it- you’re not an empath you’re just repressing your feelings and/or don’t know how to respond in a healthy way to other peoples experiences 🤷🏻‍♀️

Women with low esteem, lack of boundaries and too much empathy/ naivety is krpyonite to abusive men

Instead of kryptonite (which would imply that empaths can weaken abusive men) you meant something like catnip/honey, right? I think strongly boundaried people are the kryptonite for narcissists.

For example instead of doling out endless empathy to toxic people - they use their hyper vigilance as a way to prevent / predict danger

That's a great point. I keep coming across fluffy articles about how, as a person with empathic traits I should be a psychologist or a coach or in some people focused job, but in reality, the ability to see danger on the horizon and prevent it, also bodes well for a career in engineering.

My understanding is that it's basically a coping mechanism to help protect yourself by better knowing the mindset of your abusers growing up. You're more attuned to their moods and emotions in an effort to neutralize them or know when to avoid them if they're angry/upset.

As adults, being an empath is a sign that there's more boundary work to be done with a therapist so that you can avoid taking on people's emotional states.

Thanks for sharing the quotes from the studies!

Ugh, I have a (gay) guy friend who been saying for years that he's an empath and that whenever other people feel emotions around him he feels them too, but intensified. He literally means that in a magical psychic sense. At least he doesn't think he's an 'indigo child'.

[–]mercybenelliFDS Newbie 21 points22 points23 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

What is an “indigo child”

[–]AceFaceXena 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's children who are purported to have special gifts and will be engaged in "healing the world." I work with some people in the new age sectors and most of them are exploiters and charlatans. However, there are a lot of experiences that vary from person to person, including some that are often categorized as "paranormal" etc. It's probably just different levels of physical perception and sensitivity. For example there is a 6th sense, the electromagnetic sense, that's real but it's a lot weaker in humans than it is in many animals. So it's an actual "sensation" that some are more aware of than others, like "women's intuition," or the experience of feeling like someone is watching you even if you don't see them or know with vision that they're there. You can feel their energy at a distance. Like when my daughter was small I was cleaning in the kitchen and it got quiet and I "knew" there was something wrong. It turned out she was playing with black shoe polish my LVH never admitted he had or left out where she could get into it and she'd coated her whole body with black shoe polish tribal looking stuff. Most moms have had similar experiences. I'm speaking up for those who do experience different sensations from others. I'm a physical empath - I've been that way my whole life. So when I shake hands with a creep, I can tell it's a creep - that's not exactly a "superpower" but others don't seem to be able to tell if the guy is bad or not sometimes. I guess by statements of others here, this makes me a "creepy narcissist." It's not a "gift" it's really anxiety-producing. The best help I could say is that people should listen to their intuitions and "creeped out" feelings as that's real and seems to me is in the FDS handbook.

[–]keep_my_stuffFDS Newbie 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I am a bit like this too. I don't share this openly, I just avoid touching people (without telling them a reason). This post is more about the men who'd toot their own horn and expect to be treated as magical and special by others for having baseline functioning empathy.

[–]No_Fig2938FDS Newbie 26 points27 points28 points 4 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link

Being an empath doesn't mean you have basic empathy, everyone has empathy, it means you have excessive empathy and towards all people regardless of who they are, and towards all kinds of emotions they shows as if you're connected to them, I had empathy for cruel criminals just because they looked sad when caught, this of course is a terrible trait, I think it's result of childhood abuse I went through which resulted in my obsession with being considerate and not have other people go through the same, and additionally having someone show they actually love me made me happy that they spared me love, and I believed I need to make them happy as if it's my duty, tho it just made me an easy pray for abusive people as I was super suspectable to guilt tripping, I couldn't dare build any boundaries since the guilt I felt when I saw I hurt someone was immense (no matter how much they fucked me over) especially if they're someone I love, I thought that hating a person is terrible because it hurts thier feeling, even if they deserved that hatred, I know I was a doormat but I seriously didn't mind as long as I don't have to see someone hurt, I just ignored my emotions because they were to dull in comparison to the emotions other showed me at the moment.

This has been my reality for most of my life and I couldn't overcome this until after years of narcissistic abuse and terrible friends that I could not take it anymore, I was under so much stress at the time I exploded with anger for the first time, a bit after that subsided I dissociated and no longer could feel empathy as I used to, I didn't feel anything in general which is why, one of the closest people to me and one of the few of who treated me with kindness had died at the time and I didn't shed a single tear, I felt like a monster, but I was glad because for the first time I felt truly free of others emotions, though it came with the price of having no reason to live anymore, the only thing that prevented me from throwing myself of a building was my religion, though now thanks to fds I've retained a bit of empathy (towards certain topics) and I'm feeling a bit better, I'm still more stoic and cold, a lot of the consideration I show became just a performance from how I used to be, I intend to go to therapy in the future when I can afford it so hopefully I can feel like a person again and this is temporary.

When men use the word empath, most are not actual empaths, but are just not as emotionless as the rest they feel special, because most men lack empathy those who does are a god given I guess and sould be worshipped.

I just hate how men ruin everything, but I don't want women who have this trait to feel ashamed of themselves because of that, if I had taken this more seriously and actually dared to stick for myself I wouldn't be in this situation, I don't want anyone else having to do through this also.

Ok that's the end of this rant, I just had to get this out 😅 also fitting my experiences in one comment was kinda hard so forgive me if it's a bit messy.

[–]blueveinnobleFDS Apprentice 15 points16 points17 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

This was a great writeup, thanks for sharing. I can relate. I was "empathetic" purely as a survival mechanism—from living with an alcoholic, narc mother + highly dysfunctional family—as the black sheep/scapegoat. So for me, understanding others' emotions was the difference between going hungry or getting beaten until I peed myself.

Later on in life, I carried this extreme "empathy" and offered it freely to the MOST un-deserving people (male/female, platonic/romantic). It took countless betrayals and disappointmemts for me to realize, my "empathy" is the root cause. I was taking on others' emotions and making them into my own. Adding in my "need" to gain their approval (or else they would leave me or hit me???—abandonment fears/insecure attachment/cptsd).

How I see it, empathy has a dark side. Being an "empath" is a sign to me, of loose boundaries and misplaced care/concern towards others. When, that energy should be directed towards ourselves.

To add on, from my childhood...I was actually "trained" by my family to put their needs/wants first and deliberately trained to ignore my own needs/wants. We can see how that is a recipe for disaster when the same approach is applied to adult relationships!

You're not alone, I'm glad you recognized how your empathy was in fact harming you. As we tend to do—it seems you have now veered to the other extreme (not shedding a tear for the loss of a dear friend). In my opinion, I think you will further learn when it's safe to express empathy. I would say, those who have demonstrated empathy towards you are worthy of reciprocity.

In a way, we should be treating empathy the way we treat respect (should be earned, not given). Of course, you enter new interaction with a baseline of respect, or empathy in this case (common decency). Then as the interaction deepens, you reassess if the person is worthy of more/less, and adjust accordingly. If a person demonstrates they are unworthy of your empathy, then you can move on. Hope that makes sense ☺️.

[–]No_Fig2938FDS Newbie 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm sorry you've went through something similar, And yeah I greatly get the feeling like your being trained, for the longest time my emotions has been ignored and treated as insignificant compared to my mother's.

Right now I think I'm experiencing disassociation from my own feelings, I'm slowly healing but it looks like it's gonna take a while, but don't worry I treat the remaining good friends I have well even if I'm not feeling the same.

Thank you for your answer ❤️, it's quite helpful, especially the last bit, that's the best way to go about it. :)

[–]blueveinnobleFDS Apprentice 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're very welcome and thank you for your kind words💝💝. If I might add, it's not "selfish" to redirect your empathy towards yourself. One of the best advice I got on this was, "treat yourself, like your own best friend".

Mistake? Comfort yourself that you'll do better next time. Shortcoming? Adopt new habits/skills until you overcome. Weaknesses? Forgive yourself and work on your strengths (contrary to popular belief, working on weaknesses is only helpful towards gaining competency, not mastery)

I write to myself or make voice notes. Like "Sis, you got this. Don't let nobody play you!"

My "best friend" is fierce!!! 😋

[–]Catz10000FDS Newbie 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Ugh, I'm so sorry you went through that. I also did and I'm a little tipsy so forgive any confusion: it's a trauma response in women where we're socialized to not give a shit about ourselves or our needs. Men have no empathy because yes, they have the emotional range of a teaspoon. If men cared, they wouldn't rape or apologize for rapists, do emotional and household labor, and stop the games. I have many male friends who claim they're empaths while their children are screwed up and they feel they make the world a better place by arguing on Facebook. This hits so close to home.

[–]No_Fig2938FDS Newbie 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah I think it's a trauma response also, tho the cause seems to differ from one person to another, I found the term empath to be accurate as it describes exactly your response to trauma rather than other broad terms.

Exactly, men pretend to be empathetic, but only about topics that society deems important enough so they can get social leverage of being a "good person" , the only issues they truly care about are male issues which affect them directly (also by care about it means wallowing in self pity and playing victims so we all feel bad and pat them on the back while they continue being abusive)

[–]keep_my_stuffFDS Newbie 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

oh, if they're such empaths then do they also not watch p.rn? You know, because they empathize with the exploited women there ?

[–]SolunaJuneFDS Newbie 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We got this new temp contractor guy who calls himself a "reactive empath." He's claimed that once he was having a bad day and was feeling sick, and it was because, unbeknownst to him, his sister in law was breaking up with her boyfriend.

🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

He's tried a few manipulative tactics on me and quickly learned I don't fall for that bullshit. Also, he does this thing where he will stare at you from 6 feet away and expect you to address him, instead of just coming up to you and asking his question. I just let him stand there until he realizes it's not working and just speaks up. An absolute fucking weirdo. He even weirds out the men on my team.
