We are each personally responsible for what we are willing to accept. I personally believe that there is a great disadvantage to the common man in this world, and that coercive societal forces and constructs do in fact create a situation whereby he is greatly compelled to be a so called "wage slave", but it is still, ultimately, the choice of the individual to sell his hours away in exchange for currency.

I agree, its kind of crazy when you think about the fact that actual slaves often had a wife and kids (i believe this was the case) whereas many men cant afford or get that today? I guess thats part of how they kept men in line, hard to enslave (and get any productivity) out of someone who has nothing to lose.
I think the only reason we dont have slavery today is they realized it would be more efficient to tell people they were free and tax the shit out of them then worry about having slaves.

Economic coercion affects most everyone. If I desire a standard abode, access to societies goods, etc, I typically must have currency.
I could go live in the woods and subsist on wild foods, if I had the knowledge and discipline. I could beg, steal, freeload, or take state subsidies.
HOWEVER, if I want to interact with society on my own terms, if I want to enjoy goods and services, I have the OPTION of getting any sort of job or gig, including unfavorable work like dangerous factory work, sex work, night shift, etc.
I also have the option of robbing people, should I so choose. Maybe setting up a fake festival (ala 'Fyre festival") and duping a bunch of strangers out of THEIR cash.
Its all about personal responsibility, folks. Everything we do is a choice, whether we are accountable for it or not.

The left are arguing that exploitation of those with no capital and only their labour to sell occurs at the hands of those who do not labour but own capital. They're arguing relations between employer and employee are functionally analogous to that between slaveowner and slave in many historical examples of slavery.

In principle I agree. But you can't discount that very real inequalities become established an entrenched to the point where exploitation can become systemic. Look at company stores, rent seeking and political corruption as examples.
We can't just pretend we live in some level playing field with no bad actors, no attempts to increase and entrench inequalities and exploitation. That's why I'm against the left wing, because that rhetoric can be used just as insidiously. But the idea people are poor exclusively because of poor discretionary spending, and not in many cases because of exploitation is obviously false and trying to argue it only plays into leftist hands.

No different than the squirrel outside or the badger. All are barely surviving and must work hard just to exist. No vacations for them either. Our vanity as 1st-worlders would have us believe that this is not the default condition of all animals (including us).
By definition, humans are animals, but you can't compare them at all since the industrial evolution anymore. There is no animal with capabilities remotely close to humans. No human has to starve in the first world, and we should strive to change the whole world to this way.
The main difference between us and animals is that we can use artificial muscle power to produce anything we want. Automated production of everything will make human labor obsolete. No person has to work 40 hours a week to sustain civilization, or themselves.
The industrial revolution was the biggest scam in the history of mankind. We quadrupled our work efficiency, but kept working the same amount of time. It's starting to get better, I'm only working 37 hours a week, and I hope that my children will have to work no more than 20 hours to live a happy and productive life.

Perhaps you get to a point where you spend 4-5 hours a day on daily tasks.
As long as nothing goes wrong? Sure. This is feasible. But what about the winter? Droughts? Illnesses? That tornado or tropical storm that just kickfucked your neighborhood into the ocean?. 4-5 hour work weeks get shattered when your definition of 'sustain' includes activities to build resilience and minimizing the disruption of unexpected events. This could be nuts for a squirrel or dried meat for a primitive. To you and I, this could be anything from a savings account, a brick house instead of a hut, or even health or life insurance. Otherwise, life gets real fucking Hobbesian.
The other factor is competition. I'll spare you the easy caveman analogy and simply point out that we continue to fulfill our biological imperative by separating into tribes. 'Sustaining' may include staying even with a tribe full of over-achievers or assholes. The overachieving assholes who are REALLY good at math can louse up a 4-hour workday schedule like a flaming ball of pitch crashing through a whorehut. If you have a business, it is even worse. Coconut trading or microchip making. Doesn't matter. That expansionist tribe will ALWAYS exist. Consider this concept a relic of the past? I have a nice dacha in Crimea to sell you. It even comes with a Ukraine passport.
I don't want to be elastic with *your* definition of sustain--especially as it applies to today and tomorrow. Please correct me where I have made poor assumptions of your point.

This is very well thought through. Thank you for the great comment. I agree with most of it, and only have a few things to add to the argument.
We don't know what the future holds yet, and maybe the industrial evolution was just the beginning.
I wouldn't use "sustain" as the most basic way of living, but as a word to describe a happy life by today's standards.
Maybe we'll have robots who sustain both us and themselves, while providing everything someone might want.
Right now though, we still need to work as much as we do for such a comfortable lifestyle.

The story indicates to me that she wanted pain pills and exchanged sex to get them. If she had wanted to be helped break her pain pill addiction she could have refused the alleged transaction of pain pills for sex, sex being her trade.
