The "big boy" part is relevant to men's rights, but I think asking to guess the teacher's gender is excessive. It's that type of subtle negativity that we don't need in discussions of equality. From my stance, the gender of the teacher is completely irrelevant to the story.

Also, I think one large reason that we may have assumed the teacher was female is because the teaching... industry(?) is dominated by women. I don't know exactly why, but again, it's irrelevant.

EDIT: a quote in the article refers to the teacher as "she." I didn't see that at first.

It brings to mind an "America's Funniest Home Video's" clip where a woman (presumably the mother) laughs repeatedly as a toddler, a boy, is repeatedly smashed into the snow by the family dog. Had the experience of breaking a bone in my foot at rugby practice (age 12), practice finished, coach (in my instance male) went home without helping in any way and I had to hobble up-campus (that damned chapel hill) to phone my mum for medevac.

That teacher ended up absconding with a bunch of equipment from the technical drawing department, so not a fully-functioning moral sense. Even so, it wasn't obvious that a bone was broken.

Same as when I broke my radius. Somehow the school nurse couldn't diagnose that and thought I needed a short lie-down for my sprained wrist. Required re-setting in hospital.

Point being that the school staff were not (mis)treating me on the basis of the final professional diagnosis, just their own initial guess, as we all do when presented with a complaining kid.

Some of the spills you see little kids take where they cry, dust themselves off and go straight back to careening fearlessly are hair-raising.

I'm guessing that the broken bone is a shock to the people responsible, so they made a horrible mistake to try promoting resilience on this occasion. The other big mistake was not to supervise the recovery process properly.

I am in no way defending this woman, as she is obviously sick in the mind - but this was nothing to do with gender. Some people are simply just sadistic.

Also, when she said 'you're a big boy', she may have meant that he was too physically large for her to carry him. Just trying to offer another perspective.

See, the teacher said "I can't carry you". Not "I won't" or "I don't want to for fear of being labeled a pedophile". Unless there is some school policy against carrying children, I'm going to out on a limb here and say the teacher felt physically incapable of carrying the child.

The problem really is that they didn't get the child medical attention. If you as a de facto caretaker of a child are incapable in some capacity, you find someone who can. You don't just walk away.

Edit: After looking at the school's faculty list, there are 12 men of the 68 faculty mentioned, only 5 of which are teachers, the rest advisors, custodians, and the principal. Of course, I'm not certain what a kinetic wellness teacher is, but it sounds like a grandiose term for gym. A cursory google search suggest physical fitness, including dance.

I have to wonder what would happen if a little girl had slipped and broken her leg.

Not a concussion, but a bruise, and the teacher most likely didn't know about the fracture. Furthermore, the accusation about having to crawl comes from an upset parent, hardly the most reliable source.
